NWS: AL94 is likely to become a tropical depression in a day or two near the Bahamas and interests there should monitor the progress of this system. Heavy rainfall is likely across portions of the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Turks and Caicos, & the southern Bahamas. 👇

#TropicalStorm #Nari (나리; Korean for lily) moved past Hokkaido last week. A new #TropicalDepression will soon become #TropicalStorm #Wipha (วิภา; Thai woman's name):

• It will skirt northern Luzon, Philippines by Fri evening, before entering South China Sea on Sat.
• It will brush past Hong Kong and Macau by Sunday pm.
• It may make landfall as a #SevereTropicalStorm on Leizhou Pen., in Hainan, China, or in Vietnam on Tue.
• It might not reach #Typhoon strength though. We'll wait and see.

The #storm, which made landfall as a #TropicalStorm early Sunday in #SouthCarolina before moving inland as a #TropicalDepression, was moving NE toward Washington, DC, Monday morning, & a #flood watch was in place for parts of #DC, #Maryland, #NewJersey & #Virginia.

For the eastern and central North Pacific east of 180 longitude:

1. South of Southern Mexico:
A large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms located
several hundred miles south of southern Mexico is associated with a
broad area of low pressure. Environmental conditions appear
conducive for gradual development of this system, and a tropical
depression is likely to form over the weekend while it moves
generally westward to west-northwestward around 10 mph.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...30 percent.
* Formation chance through 7 days...high...80 percent.

• #TropicalStorm #Jebi has formed off the Northern Marianas, and will stay away from major landmass as it moves north over the next few days.
• A #TropicalDepression south of #Okinawa will soon become TS #Krathon as it moves on a V-shaped trajectory towards Luzon, Philippines, before coming near #Taiwan mid next week as a #Typhoon with 115kts/132mph/213kph winds and 140kts/161mph/259kph gusts.

The NYT says some places will get 30 inches from Debbie.

This sort of thing reminds me of the absolutely devastating storms that hit Greece and North Africa last year, which were NOT hurricanes but very very very WET storms.

Now am calling on our #pasopacifico #raptor monitoring team at our #hawkwatch station to evacuate early tomorrow as a #TropicalDepression approaches Nicaragua. There will not be too many raptors flying through that and so its best to keep the team safe and dry. #tropicalwx

Since dust is know to impact ice particle formation in vertically developing clouds, it is relevant to ask what it is the impact of the dust in the storm development.

This is an active area of research.
