Via Euronews: Striking souvenir from 2nd century AD Hadrian's Wall in UK found in Spain

A Hadrian’s Wall souvenir from 2nd century CE is found in Spain.
Researchers from the CSIC and the National Archaeological Museum have published a study of the ‘Berlanga cup’, an exceptional Roman piece from the 2nd century CE made in Britain and found in Soria.
It’s the only one of its kind with data from the eastern flank of Hadrian’s Wall.

Vindolanda
Ever thought history was all sewn up? Vindolanda will put you right on that.
I have never had much time for museums. My attention wanders, especially when herding the young scion at full tilt through tourist traps. But Vindolanda stopped me in my tracks.
What makes it work is simple: the ruins and the finds sit together. You see the thing, then you see where it came fro ...

Some new reading material has arrived. Probably the next two on the physical reading list. Hadrian's Wall by Adrian Goldsworthy seems like a good starting point to get some reading in on the subject before my #hadrianswall trip later in the summer, and I've enjoyed his other histories that I've read.
And it unfortunately seems like a rather fitting time to read George Orwell's #1984GeorgeOrwell

Poking my head in here again.
Wondering if anyone has done the #hadrianswall path has any idea about how feasible a little side quest to Vindolanda would be? Booked a short walking trip for later in the year and I'll be stopping in Once Brewed between days, but that's at the end of a 20km day and start of a 15km day.

Wintery walk from Haltwhistle to the Wall today

Sewingshields trig point from this morning... trying not to look cold!! 🤣 It was just fingers (mainly thumbs) that were the problem, and this could be related to a combo of strong/cold winds and Pacer-Poles? Fabulous route though, from Housesteads to Sewingshields, looping up around Haughton Common, and joining the Pennine Way back to the Wall. Beyond Housesteads, we only met farmers and sheepdogs all day! 😅

I suppose I can't exactly claim this photo is much different to my last photo, but it 'IS' a different tree. 🤣📷

Yesterday afternoon's boxing day walk became a bit of a race against sunset! This is with my current default setup: Sony A7cII and a Viltrox 20mm prime fitted with a 1/8th black pro-mist filter. I find the filter very subtle most of the time, but here you can definitely see light spilling around the tree.📷

Roman soldiers defending Hadrian’s Wall had intestinal parasites.
Excavations of sewer drains at the Roman fort of Vindolanda near Hadrian’s Wall in northern England, occupied by Roman soldiers from the 1st to the 4th century CE, have revealed the presence of several parasites that can cause debilitating illness in humans.

Well worth a read if you've an interest in Roman history in England and fancy a picture of everyday life on the northern border of the empire. The Vindolanda tablets are absolutely fascinating if you've not seen or heard about them before.

Fence on Hadrian's Wall, designed to deter barbaric invaders from walking along the wall?
The path does take you along the top of the wall for several hundred metres here, but either end of the designated section is blocked - presumably to protect more fragile sections of the wall. 📷

Archaeologist Catherine Teitz explores how Roman architecture and everyday life along Hadrian’s Wall evolved over the centuries – and how old excavation records can still yield new insights. She values the strong Roman heritage research network in the Rhine-Main region and lends support to early-career researchers in her field ... I'm curious if there is some sort of sane reason why the Roman Temple of Mithras has it's alter decorated with a cow, two tangerines, and a small log?! 🤔 #HadriansWall #Hiking #Temple #Mithras

For #RomanSiteSaturday this is #Housesteads, the more modern name for #Vercovicium, a #Roman #Fort along #HadriansWall in the north of #England. At Housesteads there is a section of the wall you're actually allowed to walk along (not that this stops people from walking along the bits you're not supposed to). This picture is of the #granary building. The pillars were to raise the floor and keep grain stored there dry.

Packed and ready for a blissful week-long break in a secluded country cottage (where there's no telly and no Wi-Fi) quite near #Hexham ... away from all the #Christmas hullabaloo.
Just us, our books, our crosswords, lots and lots and lots of walks, mince pies ... and maybe the odd glass of port.
