2 men jailed for 4years & three months for felling the tree at #SycamoreGap along Hadrian’s Wall. They seem to have had no reason for doing this other than missing a few brain cells/being drunk. Probably a reasonable sentence but a sad loss for many.

Even now, I can’t understand why anyone would’ve even contemplated committing such a crime. In an ideal world they’d be forced to spend five years planting trees for the forestry commission when their prison sentence is complete.

The Artist Formerly Known as Sycamore Gap
The most photographed tree in the British Isles. Probably. As seen in the movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves".
The famous tree was illegally felled in September 2023 so this location just won't be the same for another few hundred years.

For my money, 28 Years Later is one of the best movies in years. Fun in execution but rich in meaning and subtext.
What seems to be getting less attention is how much of a love letter to Northumberland it is. From the Holy Island setting, the Viking invaders, the Blaydon Races, the sense of coalmining community, Sycamore Gap & the Angel of the North, it's marinated in love for my small part of the world.

Two men have been found guilty of the "mindless destruction" of the world famous Sycamore Gap tree, the felling of which sparked international outrage.
The tree had grown in a dip on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland for more than 100 years before it was cut down in a "moronic mission" in the early hours of 28 September 2023, Newcastle Crown Court heard.
