  1. no one has said anything about the actual gameplay, only that i'm unethical for using AI art on a prototype (i guess game design is reserved for graphical artists or deep pockets?).

well, jokes on them. i ain't gonna be gatekeeped! because i remade all the cards using public domain art!

surely, the good people giving me shit will now try the game and give me solid feedback; surely! right? ...right???

  11. A short reintroduction. I'm designing Vienna 1814: Waltz of Nations — a board game about the Congress of Vienna seen from the side history classes tend to skip: salons, gossip, romance, intrigue and social ambition, played through real historical figures. Still in development, and I'm sharing the process openly as it slowly becomes playable.

  16. Weekend question for the history-minded: what's the most random fact you know about the Congress of Vienna? Obscure, strange, barely-sourced — all welcome, no bad answers. I'm designing a board game about the Congress, so I'm genuinely collecting these.

    Interesting results!

Early on, no one was choosing nightmare witch. I suspect those folks probably saw the painting for my book cover and figured “well if someone here isn’t a nightmare witch, I don’t know who is”.

But 50% of you are correct! There’s no generous gourmand in Horns of Shadow and Gold. Although I was thinking about a card I made for a board game once 😉

  26. Earlier this year I presented Chronicles of Elodia at Terminal City Tabletop Convention 2026, a game about building your life from an orphan to becoming a princess! This is still very much a work in progress but it was super fun to show off!

  27. In high school, history — especially the Congress of Vienna — was the subject I could reliably sleep through. Years later it became an obsession, and now I'm designing a board game about it, emotionally invested in 200-year-old gossip.
What would your younger self refuse to believe about who you are now?

  32. Content note: political violence.

The die sent Faces of Vienna to Romania — and to Tudor Vladimirescu: in Vienna during the Congress with no seat at the table, killed seven years later by his own allies on a charge no one ever proved.
I keep this series light. This one I couldn't. A story about betrayal, and how hard it is to say who betrayed whom.

  42. Today's journey into the 19th century took me to an old peasant barn.

Fitting, in a way — I'm designing a game set in the aristocratic salons of the Congress of Vienna, but most of our ancestors, mine included, were common folk. My great-great-grandfather was a miller in eastern Poland.

Old wood and roof hay do something no research note can: for a moment you really are back in the early 1800s. Then your back reminds you it's 2026.

  47. Travelling to Zamość and around for a few days, so a small photo series begins: at least one image a day, each connected to some strand of 19th-century history — not always the Congress of Vienna, though this corner of Europe was reshaped by it in 1815. Sometimes design research just means going for a walk.

  57. Something for the Coffee, part two: the Sachertorte. Famous origin — 1832, a 16-year-old apprentice, an improvised dessert for Prince Metternich. Almost certainly a myth built later by the baker's son to sell imperial nostalgia; the man himself placed it in the 1840s, elsewhere. The lesson I keep relearning while designing Vienna 1814: the best food stories are usually the ones someone polished after the fact.
