It was a very useful and honest test. Most players seemed to like the theme, but one thing became clear: the current version gives players too little agency.

Too often the game says “you cannot” instead of asking “what risk are you willing to take?”

I think I already felt that, but the test helped me name it.
The ritual is not dead. It needs rebuilding. 🔥

I'm pretty excited about this moment. I have been working towards this for an unreasonably long time, tbh.

Hopfully some people will come and test. I have a jitsi server available for screensharing and chatting about any problems or feedback about the game.

I cleared the first full dungeon with a playtesting party with no healer. The boss was rough and not a sure win, but I made it. I did a few trials on the boss and won most of the time, but barely. Now to see if I can handle the real game with this party 🤔

I’m thinking about writing a short article about the very fundamental of #GamesUserResearch / #Playtesting in a pragmatic approach. It’s not dark sorcery, just a few thing to think about in order to do it well, because it’s easy to screw it up. Based on discussions I could had with some #gamedevs, I often see them falling in the same common traps.

I talk about #playtesting a lot because I playtest a lot (and yet not nearly enough), but also I think it's important to share what it's like. I've met a lot of people excited about making games who don't playtest. Their games are bad. All games are bad until they're not. The only way you're going to get something decent without feedback is if you're making something boring, which is even worse than making something bad.

One player didn't catch that a character was lying, while another player was annoyed it was hinted at again after they got it. I was told there was too much story, but then also that the longest piece of story on a level was good. It was suggested that I don't need to bother explaining a specific game thing, but it was also suggested I should add a whole cut-scene system to make that thing extra clear. Naturally, I got a suggestion to change my entire game's aesthetic as well as to add several completely new game systems. #gamedev #playtesting
