  7. October ended with my least-scheduled week of the entire month, a break I needed after all of this month’s travel. My sole outside-my-home work event happened Tuesday, an Ars Technica event about AI that let me catch up with some friends from that outstanding publication. I went from that directly to the Kamala Harris rally at the Ellipse–the first presidential-campaign event I’d attended since going to an Obama rally in 2012

Patreon readers got an extra post from me this week: an essay unpacking the Washington Post’s shameful and self-destructive decision not to run a presidential endorsement and comparing that to other reasons newsroom reporters can resent their paper’s editorial page.

10/28/2024: Apple Finally Replaces Lightning With USB-C on Keyboards, Mice, Trackpads, PCMag

This is a post I should have been able to write years ago, but with less than two months left before a European Union mandate to switch to USB-C for peripherals, Apple finally killed off Lightning on its mice, trackpads and most of its keyboards. Which means I can finally replace the antique mouse that came with the iMac that I bought in 2009, which I’ve kept long after replacing that computer just because it runs on AA batteries.

10/31/2024: Google Announces Play Store Tweaks to Entice More of Your Attention and Money, PCMag

When a company gives me an advance copy of its news, I try to add some context to my own writeup so I’m not just recapping their PR. In this case, that context was the “service fees” that Google charges developers and the court cases challenging them and Google’s control over Android apps.

10/31/2024: Passkey Adoption Reaches a New Milestone, Even With Uneven Support, PCMag

The context I added to this post: how late and spotty passkey support from companies holds back this authentication standard, and how out-of-date directories of passkey support make it harder for people to find companies that do offer this stronger, easier sign-in option.

11/2/2024: Let’s Fly: How to Watch a Rocket Launch From Florida’s Space Coast, PCMag

This is a post I’d had in mind for years, but I couldn’t write it as a proper how-to until I’d finally watched a launch from a part of the Kennedy Space Center open to the general public–which I did when I traveled to Florida to see the Sept. 12 launch of AST SpaceMobile’s first five production satellites.

But this was already the case before #October7th. And before October 7, #Baerbock condemned this.
And who stopped Baerbock from reading #Haaretz? Who is stopping anyone from reading Haaretz? And there are also other #Jewish #publications like #TheForward those are important for correctly classifying #modernGermanAntiSemitism.
    Can #AnnalenaBaerbock not read #English?

  12. October was a busy month… for great reasons! 💪

It’s been rewarding to help organizations improve adaptability and service robustness, and I saw plenty of 💡 moments. Applying Domain-Driven Design and Chaos Engineering inspired fresh perspectives. And folks asked great questions.

    Game: A Juggler's Tale

    Platform: Steam
    Release Date: Sep 30, 2021
    Installation Date: Oct 24, 2023
    Unplayed: 0d
    Playtime: 46m

Game number seven in the October Humble Choice Bundle is "A Juggler's Tale"; a 2.5D sideways scrolling puzzle adventure game.

I have incredibly mixed emotions about this game.

You play as Abby, a young girl, who is both a juggler, and a marionette. Abby is trapped in a circus and forced to perform, and A Juggler's Tale is the story of her escape, narrated by the puppeteer.

The graphics are gorgeous, the sound design is good. The puzzles are not too challenging, although the controls (on controller) can be a little bit fiddly.

The narrator is an older man with an English accent, and is in turns condescending, and patronising in the way he talks to (and about) Abby, frequently belittling her (and technically *my*) failures when attempting to solve puzzles - and I utterly despise him.

I'm not sure whether the intent of the devs was to make me feel like that towards him, but his manner and commentary triggers emotional responses within me that I don't think were intended.

I'm tempted to just Google the game to find out how it ends, and if there's any kind of catharsis, because the idea of spending the entire game with this horrible person, fills me with dread.

    A Juggler's Tale is:

    4: Good*

    #AJugglersTale #SidewaysScroller #Adventure #Puzzle #HumbleChoice #Gaming #Project365ONG #Project365 #NewPlay

    *Trigger Warning, mention of abuse.

I suspect that my reaction is partly a trauma response, from the abuse I experienced growing up. So, while I think this game is good, if you have that kind of trauma it may actually be triggering, which is a weird thing to have to say about a game like this.

  14. Continuing my 2022 #books thread.
During the summer and early fall, I binge read the entire #OctoberDaye series by Seanan McGuire. It helped me through stressful times. In addition to chosen family, it also has main character who has a talent for chaos (in the best way) which was oddly comforting.

I then went on to binge read McGuire's #Incryptid series. Talk about found families! I liked the most recent books in the series the best because I identified more with the characters.
