RE: https://fosstodon.org/@tarsius/116643132796222151
In 1990 Dr. Peter Lee's 15-212 course at #CarnegieMellon introduced me to Scheme. It's also when I first came to comprehend the power of #Emacs and #EmacsLisp.
In the first hour, Professor Lee demonstrated elegantly that everything is a list: data are lists and programs are lists. Every list returns a value, and functions are just lists that do calculations! Functions can return lists, of course, and so you can write functions that return functions!
I ran to the lab to hack Lisp: it wasn't in your pocket, it was in a room worth more than your parents' house. Nothing had ever seemed more natural: write, evaluate, repeat. Hack a nugget, nest lists, add parentheses, hack bigger things. But the magic thing where you write code that returns code remained a mystery: we did lots of cool stuff in that course, but we never got to macros.
Until 2026.
The surprise? The surprise is that as each decade passes, I grow to cherish lifelong learning as more and more precious.

Supervising Ralph Wiggum: pairing a design agent with a separate metacognitive critic beats a plain retry loop AND a self-monitoring agent on battery-pack design.
Metacognitive prompts alone don't help; moving them to a different agent does. Converges with ReMA's math-reasoning result: a separately parameterized head for meta-level work outperforms one model doing both.

Based on a part of our recent study #LPI at night moves pedestrians out of the dark curb zone and help pedestrians get peak semi-cylindrical #illuminance for incoming traffic occurs around 2–3 seconds into crossing. At a #walking speed of 1.4 m/s, our #SALUSLux simulation indicates an ideal LPI of 3–7 seconds. For pedestrians facing turning conflicts (and I personally experience this a lot even near #CMU campus -*-), peak visibility on the far side occurs around 7 sec

CMU blotting out "No Rapists On Campus" isn't only about Trump. The message is about Trump, but not directed at Trump. It's a note about school policy. It's the open admission that the administration knows who and what Trump is and worked with him anyway because he has power. It's highlighting the hypocrisy.
Highlighted this way, the message isn't criticism of Trump alone; it's criticism of the school President, Farnam Jahanian. Which means he responded to criticism of his decisions by blotting it out.
He should be held accountable for his demonstrated position of "supporting free speech, unless it is critical of my decisions and actions as President of this university." If he doesn't square that circle, CMU should find another President.
-
It seems like CMU president Farnam Jahanian has painted himself into a corner.
(As a former editorial cartoonist for The Tartan, I thought I should do something.)

#Eurostack plans talks about #federation and open source a lot. Yes. It can play a role in parts of the stack (particularly back end).
But centralised propriety European champions would most probably have to be part of the mix, also for capital markets to do their part.
-
Part a lack of vision by European leaders. On that score #Eurostack plans help, but it is barebones and missing much.
It does not take account of two major drivers of US digital power. Network effects/ economies of scale, capital markets and how they create an ecosystem.
