Today I took the bus and found this girl that seems intimidated like she never uses a bus before. I noticed that moment when the bus stop in front of her directly at door but she froze. I then lead the way in, slowly indirectly show her the payment.
When getting off, she didn't know (I think) her way to campus. I sorta looked at her, moved my head like "this is our stop" she then walked out with me.
No words were said, so I could be wrong, but at least she did get there to #cmu

After all the #running in #Pittsburgh, we finally paid a visit to #CMU, our alma mater more than 20 years ago! Guess who greeted us in Newell Simon Hall?

Back in the day I didn't know much about the Andrew Project at Carnegie Mellon University. This 1996 retrospective, by one of the lead designers, is also a good history and overview of the main components: a network file system, a GUI toolkit, and an email and bulletin board system.

Currently digesting this course from Carnegie Mellon University on an introduction to modern AI.
I'm not terribly deep in yet, but I think I can give it a soft recommendation for anyone who has a bit of a programming background, a bit of a linear algebra background, and a bit of a calculus background and is interested in the modern state of the art regarding AI (in particular, LLMs, their capabilities and limitations).
And, hey, it's free.

Fun old-time radio fact about my fellow CMU alumnus T.C. Jones, mentioned in this story.
Bob & Ray used to play a song they called "In Your Hat," which they claimed was from the fictional musical "Westchester Furioso."
In reality, the song was from the musical "New Faces of 1956," and was sung by Jones, a drag performer who attended Bethany College and Carnegie Tech in the 1940s. He died young (cancer), aged only 50:

In 1990 Dr. Peter Lee's 15-212 course at #CarnegieMellon introduced me to Scheme. It's also when I first came to comprehend the power of #Emacs and #EmacsLisp.
In the first hour, Professor Lee demonstrated elegantly that everything is a list: data are lists and programs are lists. Every list returns a value, and functions are just lists that do calculations! Functions can return lists, of course, and so you can write functions that return functions!
I ran to the lab to hack Lisp: it wasn't in your pocket, it was in a room worth more than your parents' house. Nothing had ever seemed more natural: write, evaluate, repeat. Hack a nugget, nest lists, add parentheses, hack bigger things. But the magic thing where you write code that returns code remained a mystery: we did lots of cool stuff in that course, but we never got to macros.
Until 2026.
The surprise? The surprise is that as each decade passes, I grow to cherish lifelong learning as more and more precious.

The second summer GIS internship posting is now live. One of the two positions has already been filled, so I encourage interested students to apply as soon as possible. Currently, these two positions are open to on and off campus students. https://cmu.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/CMU/job/GIS-Intern---Enterprise-Space-Information-Management--ESIM-_2024502

Based on a part of our recent study #LPI at night moves pedestrians out of the dark curb zone and help pedestrians get peak semi-cylindrical #illuminance for incoming traffic occurs around 2–3 seconds into crossing. At a #walking speed of 1.4 m/s, our #SALUSLux simulation indicates an ideal LPI of 3–7 seconds. For pedestrians facing turning conflicts (and I personally experience this a lot even near #CMU campus -*-), peak visibility on the far side occurs around 7 sec

Hive mind: Do I know anyone from the #CarnegieMellon class of 1996 who's coming to Pittsburgh for their reunion next month?

🤖 Welcome to the 21st-century education, where #CMU generously offers you a "minimal free version" of their AI course—two weeks late, minus the quizzes and exams, but hey, you can still submit those autograded assignments! 📝🎓 It's like getting the crumbs of an AI cake, with a side of #FOMO. 🍰👉📚

Bus-ped crash!
This actually happened so close to #CMU campus.Although there are other factors of course, signal design and driver behavior etc, I noticed also that the current street lighting conditions generated a #silhouette vision condition that can be avoided if the lighting is a bit further away on fifth ave (off set to Craig st).
