Major track and station modernisation works on the Metro’s Green Line between South Gosforth and #Newcastle Airport will begin on Saturday 15 August. The line will close for nine consecutive days, re-opening on the morning of Monday 24 August, to allow 24-hour engineering operations to take place.
The work forms part of a multi-million-pound investment programme managed by operator Nexus. Key projects include track renewals, station upgrades across several stops, cable repairs, and lineside estate management. Work will also progress on a £7.94 million redevelopment of the Regent Centre interchange, which involves removing the station’s large metal canopy, updating concourses, and improving platform areas.
A replacement bus service will serve all affected stations throughout the closure period. Passengers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, with the schedule timed during the summer break to minimise disruption.

The Tyne and Wear #Metro has featured in the launch of #Newcastle United’s new adidas away kit for the 2026/27 season. One of Nexus’ new Stadler Metro trains appears in the club’s official social media video, with a group of young supporters wearing the new blue shirt on board. The launch film was shared on Newcastle United’s #Instagram and #TikTok channels, while the full video and behind-the-scenes footage are available on the club’s YouTube channel. Nexus Commercial Director Helen Mathews said it was the first time Metro had been involved in a Newcastle United kit launch and welcomed the opportunity to work with the club and #adidas. She added that the new #trains provided a strong backdrop for filming and that Metro is keen to support future projects with a range of brands.
