  1. Coal’s chimneys at Liddell are finally coming down, and in their place is a clean energy future for the Hunter. A 500MW battery, renewable industry, and new jobs on a former coal site is exactly the kind of transition we need.

  3. ✨ Golden hour over the vines ✨
Nestled at the foot of the Brokenback Range, @leogateestatewines is where timeless beauty meets world-class winemaking. 🍷

We recently worked with Leogate to capture a blend of drone and ground photography, and we’re proud to see this shot now featured as the hero image on their website. A perfect view for a perfect wine.

  6. Enough water for #nuclear reactors in #NSW but scientists worry about #wildlife

    July 19, 2024

"The federal opposition has proposed seven #NuclearPowerPlants across the country if it wins the next election.

"Its plan involves building the plants on retiring or retired #coal sites, including two in #NewSouthWales, at #Liddell in the #HunterValley and #MountPiper near #Lithgow.

    [...]

    #Environmental concerns

"The environmental impact of both [closed-loop and once through] systems has raised concerns in #conservation groups.

"While the closed-loop system does not return water warmer to the supply than when it was taken out, the once-through cooling process does.

"Professor Johnson said changes to the temperature of #LakeLyell and #LakeLiddell could be harmful aquatic native #wildlife.

"'#Ecosystems are evolved and used to a certain temperature range, so when temperatures are higher than that, it can change all the things that live in the river,' she said.

"Jacqui Mills from the NSW Nature Conservation Council believed the once-through cooling method could have #catastrophic consequences.

"'If you have hot water discharges, it will very likely kill microorganisms,' Ms Mills said.

"'That has a flow-on impact for the creatures that rely on them like #platypus. It basically disrupts the #environment.'

"Julie Favell from the Lithgow Environment Group said recent examples of coal and other #mining industries breaching #environmental #regulations gave her 'no confidence' that a #NuclearPlant would be safe.

"'Over the past 20 years we have seen so many impacts on #swamps, #waterways, the damage in most cases is irreversible,' she said.

"'You cannot erase human error and natural disasters. There would be nothing left if one of those incidents happened.'"

  11. Blockade Australia are at it again this morning. I think this is the fifth day now?

They live stream on Facebook facebook.com/BlockadeAustralia (though state governments are currently trying to get Facebook to agree to delete their streams)

The media isn't reporting their actions much, so the best place to keep up to date is via the Blockade Australia Media Releases page blockadeaustralia.com/category

  12. Burning underground coal seam, Hunter Valley, NSW, 2012

It has been burning there since ever and there will be a traditional owner, respect

also try to spot the open pit coal mines around Singleton, i tried hard but could not get a good shot on these obscene wounds in the landscape.

  13. Rough day for Hunter Valley vignerons today. After a really tough growing season with significantly more rain than normal, 3 weeks out from when harvest would normally start, and they got smashed with hailstones 😔

Who wants to be a vigneron right?

Really hoping they get some great weather the next few weeks and see what the winemakers can do with the fruit that comes in.
