  1. 18 incidents, from Newcastle to Wagga Wagga.

"Police asserted the two men worked together to steal from multiple elderly female victims inside shopping centre carparks […] one of the males approached the women claiming that there was an issue with their vehicle before asking them to raise the bonnet to inspect.

While that took place, the other man stole items such as wallets, purses, cash and cards from inside the vehicle."

  2. ✨ Golden hour over the vines ✨
Nestled at the foot of the Brokenback Range, @leogateestatewines is where timeless beauty meets world-class winemaking. 🍷

We recently worked with Leogate to capture a blend of drone and ground photography, and we’re proud to see this shot now featured as the hero image on their website. A perfect view for a perfect wine.

  4. After almost 24 hours of nonstop rains, we finally have a break. Talk about wrong weekend to be up in the Hunter Valley. But we did get to take the regional train from Sydney to Singleton and that was pretty nice and easy.

  5. The latest environmental and STEM newsletter enviroBYTES is out with HCA Assembly on Thursday 6/03, grant opportunities, citizen science projects, and over 60 STEM and environmental events in the Hunter and Central Coast regions this month.

  6. Enough water for #nuclear reactors in #NSW but scientists worry about #wildlife

    July 19, 2024

"The federal opposition has proposed seven #NuclearPowerPlants across the country if it wins the next election.

"Its plan involves building the plants on retiring or retired #coal sites, including two in #NewSouthWales, at #Liddell in the #HunterValley and #MountPiper near #Lithgow.

    [...]

    #Environmental concerns

"The environmental impact of both [closed-loop and once through] systems has raised concerns in #conservation groups.

"While the closed-loop system does not return water warmer to the supply than when it was taken out, the once-through cooling process does.

"Professor Johnson said changes to the temperature of #LakeLyell and #LakeLiddell could be harmful aquatic native #wildlife.

"'#Ecosystems are evolved and used to a certain temperature range, so when temperatures are higher than that, it can change all the things that live in the river,' she said.

"Jacqui Mills from the NSW Nature Conservation Council believed the once-through cooling method could have #catastrophic consequences.

"'If you have hot water discharges, it will very likely kill microorganisms,' Ms Mills said.

"'That has a flow-on impact for the creatures that rely on them like #platypus. It basically disrupts the #environment.'

"Julie Favell from the Lithgow Environment Group said recent examples of coal and other #mining industries breaching #environmental #regulations gave her 'no confidence' that a #NuclearPlant would be safe.

"'Over the past 20 years we have seen so many impacts on #swamps, #waterways, the damage in most cases is irreversible,' she said.

"'You cannot erase human error and natural disasters. There would be nothing left if one of those incidents happened.'"

  7. On this day in 2021, I was in the Hunter Valley in NSW. I had a great day with many trains photographed. But this one of an empty Aurizon coal train at Ravensworth was my favourite of the day.

  8. It's a very happy day when a phalanx of Synergy Shiraz from Thomas Wines invades my dining room!

Andrew Thomas, the eponymous Head Winemaker, is a passionate supporter of the Hunter Valley, and only produces wines from the Valley's two signature grapes: semillon and shiraz. The breadth of expressions is incredible, from blends to single vineyard, fruity youths to aged-released. And it's all just delicious!

  9. Absolutely gorgeous day here in Newcastle. What better way to spend it than sitting in the sunshine, drinking a delightfully crisp Hunter semillon from De Illius Wines. Just doesn't get any better!

  10. I'm still relatively new to rosé, but since the first time I tasted this "Mrs H" sparkling rosé from Horner Wines I fell in love. Sparkling rosé has a reputation in Australia for being quite sweet but this is not, if there's any residual sugar it must be low. A year in the cellar has also been great for it. Classic strawberries-and-cream on the nose with beautiful full mouth feel, could just drink the entire bottle but had to share it with the wife 😂 #huntervalley #wine #rosé #sparklingwine

  11. In the category of #goodproblemstohave I received some more wine today and discovered that the Vintec is full 😱 guess that means I have to take a bottle out!

Say hello to the lucky bottle, a 2005 Lindemans Shareholder's Reserve Shiraz. A typical Hunter Valley Shiraz, medium body, medium alcohol and soft tannins that have turned to velvet over 18 years of good cellaring. The Stelvin cap also guarantees no spoilage as well! 👌

  12. So much to love about this. A blend of Hunter Valley semillon and sauvignon blanc (not sure where that's sourced from), textural, fruity bubbles under a Stelvin closure in a lightweight glass bottle. And delicious to boot! I picked up a dozen of these at auction and it was a great buy! The 1858 refers to when Tyrrells was founded (one of the oldest wine families in Australia).

    Tyrrells 1858 Cuvee Brut - bloody delicious! #huntervalley #wine #sparklingwine #semillon #sauvignonblanc

  13. It's a cold windy winter night in Newcastle but the pub is packed so we're stuck outside 😔 At least I have this delicious bottle of bubbles from Tulloch Wines to keep me warm! There's no appellation on the bottle so I'm not sure where the fruit is from but it is bloody delicious! #huntervalley #wine #sparklingwine

  14. A beautiful mid-winter day for the Aberdeen Highland Games (the Hunter Valley version!). Amongst the huge variety of stalls we found (somehow!) Saltire Wines stand.

Based in the Lovedale area of the Hunter Valley, they source fruit from all over the east coast of Australia to produce a range of delicious wines. This prosecco, with fruit from the King Valley (Australia's home of prosecco) is just stunning. Light bubbles, fruit forward. Delicious! #huntervalley #prosecco #wine

  15. Blockade Australia are at it again this morning. I think this is the fifth day now?

They live stream on Facebook facebook.com/BlockadeAustralia (though state governments are currently trying to get Facebook to agree to delete their streams)

The media isn't reporting their actions much, so the best place to keep up to date is via the Blockade Australia Media Releases page blockadeaustralia.com/category

  16. This was a new one for me, as these are expensive when released (for me anyway) & very rare on the auction market. Only released in exceptional vintages (only 3 times since this release in 2007) the Ghillie is Capercallie Wine's flagship #Shiraz. And it's a complex beast. With 16 years on it, it still has the fruit of a 3 year old wine, but with tertiary characteristics beginning to develop. Tannins are still grippy so plenty more left in this one. To the cellar with other two you! #huntervalley

  17. Long day calls for good wine. 2005 @lindemans_wine Shareholders Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz. I got this as part of a six-pack so I was hoping it was good and just blown away!

When people hear the words "Australian Shiraz", they are probably not expecting this - medium body and only 13% ABV.

The best part is that I still have 5 more bottles, and because it's under screwcap, I have no concerns that any of the others will be any different.

  18. An absolutely glorious autumn day in the Hunter Valley yesterday, got to visit my adopted semilllon vine Terry who is slowing getting ready to hibernate for the winter now that harvest is done.

And got to have a hit at the Hunter Valley Golf Club at Crowne Plaza resort. Fun course with some interesting course management challenges. All in all, a great way to spend. Thursday 👍

  19. Celebrating a big win today with this spectacular 2014 Keith Tulloch Shiraz Viognier. The 2014 vintage is widely regarded as one of the very best from the Hunter Valley, and now with 9 years in the bottle it's really singing! Needed about half an hour to really reach its best but when it did, wow! For a wine that can be had for under AUD$40, it's absolutely stunning value.

  20. Burning underground coal seam, Hunter Valley, NSW, 2012

It has been burning there since ever and there will be a traditional owner, respect

also try to spot the open pit coal mines around Singleton, i tried hard but could not get a good shot on these obscene wounds in the landscape.

  21. 2014 is a renowned vintage for Hunter Valley reds, and this one is absolutely superb! A perfect example of the Hunter Shiraz: medium body, soft tannins but fruit forward.

9 years in the bottle has softened the tannins even further: this wine just lolls around in the mouth, just hanging out and inviting you to just chill a little while longer. Absolutely delicious, sad that the winery is no more, but what a testament to their skills.

  22. It's Open That Bottle Night! To celebrate I pulled out my oldest bottle, a 1987 Tyrrells Vat 9 Dry Red. It's 100% shiraz and is made with fruit from vines that were already very old 36 years ago when the fruit for this bottle was harvested. The great news is that most of those vines are still in the ground and Tyrrells still use the fruit for their "Sacred Sites" range.

Even the wife who doesn't like aged wine enjoyed a sip of this.

  23. Rough day for Hunter Valley vignerons today. After a really tough growing season with significantly more rain than normal, 3 weeks out from when harvest would normally start, and they got smashed with hailstones 😔

Who wants to be a vigneron right?

Really hoping they get some great weather the next few weeks and see what the winemakers can do with the fruit that comes in.

  24. First time having a #barbera and it won't be the last! I was worried it might be a bit young but fruity with soft smooth tannins, absolutely delicious! From Margan Wines in the Broke/Fordwich subregion of the #huntervalley #wine
