  1. I'm still drinking from the firehose and catching up on all things @gnome. But I have to give heaps of praise to the creators of this Gnome 51 release video. It is flawless! Incredible production and pristine level of polish.

  3. "I wrote a response to Adam Bonica and Jake Grumbach’s piece in The New Republic about all the problems with the [Democratic Party fundraising] system. While I don’t agree with every point, it’s a very valuable article and points toward at least two straightforward if challenging-to-implement reforms. But we also shouldn’t lose sight of what an amazing accomplishment and how incredibly needed Democratic small donor fundraising is. It is a genuinely mass-based, non-oligarch system of funding political campaigns at a time when the Supreme Court has given billionaire oligarchs free rein to buy campaigns and offices at scale."

  4. I had a weekend with colleagues in Köln a couple of weeks ago. Just enough to get a sense of a place, not enough to really explore.

So now Köln is on my shortlist of cities to visit. If only to spend a day exploring the underground stations of the Köln Stadtbahn.

  7. I'm glad Apple made a high-end version of the iPad mini but I do think there's a benefit to having a small, cheap tablet option still.

I was hoping they'd do iPad mini ($299, A18) and iPad Pro mini ($699, A20 Pro + OLED)

  8. I’ve joined #COST Action #HARPA, a European research network on #privacy in #AI systems, bringing together computer science, law, #HCI and psychology.

HARPA works in two directions: reducing the privacy risks AI creates, and using AI to build privacy tools people can understand and use.

Over four years, it will develop guidelines on usable privacy tools and explainable AI, a catalogue of privacy risk assessment methods, training materials, and an open repository.

  9. I've dunked on this anti-Muslim bigot before, and class is in session again. Texas mandates Bible study in schools—the hell with the First Amendment. But when Muslim Americans use the same voucher program, suddenly it's Sharia law? Christian nationalists created this voucher system. Now they're fear-mongering because we're using it too. Pick up a book instead of spewing anti-Muslim hate.

  10. I juiced enough apples from the damaged tree for one batch of cider. Still have enough to do at least one more. Not as many as last year, and smaller fruit but tasty all the same. Hopefully it ciders ok.

  11. I arrived at work this morning to a wonderfully peaceful sky. Paused to just stand outdoors soaking it in. To the west, the moon was just setting. To the east, the sun was just rising. The morning seemed to rest, paused in a still space between them both.

  12. I cannot stand Sasha Baron Cohen, so I'm never very happy when he has a new movie or show coming out. I'll never forgive him for the sheer racism that is his Borat character and he loves taking cheap shots at the left and claiming "equal opportunity"

  13. I've added print styles to my site 🖨️

I honestly can't remember the last time I bothered with print styles - not just for my own personal site, but any project. Probably 2008 or so.

  14. I will add: I don’t agree with all of their conclusions or what “modernization” means in all aspects, but it was fun to see how cycling evolved in the States, specifically, and the cultural context around each shift.

  15. I am attending an #SOA (Society of Actuaries) conference. None of the countries listed, including India, China, Mexico, Brazil, has a fertility rate above 2. And people live longer. That is concerning.

    The keynote speaker says
We will have to learn to live with more risk.

    My personal opinion
We will have to learn to live with less.

    Not less risk. Less stuff.

  16. I had photographed a quote from one of my books. I forgot which book.

CoPilot attributed it to Thomas C. Schelling. But it did not know which book and I don’t have work from Schelling. Copilot withdrew its answer. 🤨

So, since Google has already digested a lot of books, I asked their AI. Yup, it found it, including the chapter.

Okay, AI has some benefits… 🤓

  19. I am enjoying exploring the new-to-me X Window Manager 'milk'.

Made a few more tweaks to the system, which are summarized in the fastfetch screenshot.

Switched to xLibre, now using Ghostty for terminal.

  20. I built a theme because I wanted a calmer way to read: Ringo for NetNewsWire. 📖

RSS feeds are fading, yet the idea behind them is more relevant than ever. NetNewsWire (open source, for iPhone, iPad and Mac) shows all your feeds in a consistent layout. Ringo makes the article view calm and minimal, installs in seconds and notifies you of updates by itself. Also open source.

    “So everything works?”
“Yes, but it’s like a metaphor for my life in that to make everything good for work I had to give up on having my own stuff.”

  29. I'm probably just old and stuck in my ways but I really don't understand the point of containers*.

Give me the files and let me set up the web server and dirs. I want to see and understand how everything is working.

    * Yes I run containers, yes I understand _how_ containers work, no I'm not looking for someone to explain to me how containers work and how they're so much better, and yes I understand the _point_, I just really would rather not deal with containers

  30. I did not knew that these were called "demonstrator" fountain pens until I learnt about this during the pandemic lockdown !

Found a local #Pakistani demonstrator #fountainpen while I was trying to organise some junk ! The nib ✒️ on this one is seriously sharp (probably an EF nib) and it is not really writing that well 👀 I have put some green #ink in it !
