  1. No One Falls in Love with You for Nothing: Don’t Be Naïve

Love is one of life’s most profound gifts, but it is not magic, and it does not make us immune to discernment. When someone falls in love with you, there is usually something they see, feel, admire, need, or hope to share. That “something” may be your kindness, your character, your humour, your strength, your companionship, your values, or the future they imagine building with you. It may also include less noble motives, such as status, convenience, money, attention, or […]

  2. One day I might write an in depth post on why choral acts such as Mediaeval Baebes, Anonymous 4, and Trio Medieval aren't that compelling or interesting.

Never only hire people with the same vocal range for an ensemble, especially if they only or mostly have soft & light voices, it gets bland very quickly after awhile.

And no fans, I do not care if these acts are succeeded or not, that is not proof that they are better or worse than any other ones out there.

  3. I wonder if one reason we've seen so much growth in the in the last decade is that pretty much everyone who actually fought in or even just lived through WWII has now passed on.

The philosopher George Santayana famously wrote: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Not only that, but I think a lot of these raise-the-flags, stop-the-boats folk genuinely believe that their ancestors from that time would support what they're doing — when probably the opposite is true.

  6. Now that I am all grown up I am caught between still wanting to be what I wanted to be when I grow up as a child, and what I am.

I'm not too sure which one is better, the plan from sixty years ago, or the reality now.

  7. Anthropic stated that companies should evaluate consolidating sub-agents into a single agent. In one architecture comparison, the single-agent setup ran about twice as fast. Anthropic published a migration kit on GitHub.

  8. The argument that 'AI' (i.e. language models) is one of the most important technologies ever is nonsense. There are technologies (computers, Internet, electricity, satellites) that if they suddenly disappeared tomorrow, it would cause chaos and an actual regression in society. #AI is not one of them. Everything would continue working just fine. If anything, it would be a net positive result.

  12. It's so cool that Obama is still making jokes about Donald Trump.

I sure wish one establishment Democrat that the normies listen to would start RINGING THE EMERGENCY ALARM to their voters.

Obama can make with the humor *after* the dictator and his co-conspirators are rotting in solitary confinement for the rest of their lives.

  15. @MadeleineS One of the things you inspired me to think about with your knitting of elementary CA patterns is whether we can get the machine itself to do the computation. The data would be stored in the position of the needles on the bed, and the output would appear as the knitted pattern. The whole thing would be mechanical, no electronics or computers involved. I'm sure you've thought about this too.

There's a 3D-printed design for a knitting machine here: youtu.be/eFesPhYR8KI by Sparks Curiosity. It would need a pretty major overhaul but I want to dream that it's possible.

Ideally one could change the settings on the carriage to select one of the 256 elementary CA but even if it was hard-wired to do just one CA (one of the universal ones) it would still be very cool to see, and could still be programmed by setting the needle positions.

Let me know what you think! Did you see someone doing this before?

  20. One of a handful of odd little milestones in the next few weeks.

Was straightening out my home office yesterday and ran across this, which is (hopefully) the only time I end up as front page news somewhere.

I remember being quite surprised when this got printed, as:

I had not interviewed for it.

The Rensselaer Republican ended my long and odd history as a news item for them by getting my title wrong (Chief Intelligence Officer?)

    I hated that picture.

  22. One of the most important things I've learnt in my career is the ability to say, "I don't know."

It's not a weakness. it's a strength. Leadership and/or management were reaching out for your expert understanding, and right now, you don't have a viewpoint. That is OK.

It can help prevent decisions being made in haste or out of FOMO.

Stop, slow down a bit, gain some insight, and then proceed with real insight.

  25. 🔥 THE BATTLE THAT TURNED TIDE OVER THE PACIFIC

    October 26

On this day in 1942, the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands erupted during the Guadalcanal campaign — one U.S. carrier sunk, another badly wounded, and two Japanese carriers plus a cruiser crippled in return. It was a tactical draw that became a strategic turning point: it broke the momentum of Japan's advance and set the stage for Midway-style victories to come. Few battles shaped the war so quietly, with smoke over dark water and no survivors left to tell the story.

  27. I realized that this October I somehow hadn't done a single Charles Band-produced film despite my love of Full Moon and Empire. So I'm making up for it by finally watching one of the few films I've never seen by one of my favorite directors: Stuart Gordon's Dolls.

Idk why I've never seene this oone, sometimes things just slip through the cracks.
