  6. Bird's-foot cliffbrake, (Pellaea mucronata), another one of our arid-adapted ferns in the Lakeview Mountains. Same genus as the coffee cliffbrake, posted a few days ago. I often find this one growing out of cracks in the rocks.

  7. This is Newberry's Lip Fern (Myriopteris newberryi): one of three species of fern that I've observed growing in these arid, rocky hills. The "lip" in the name supposedly has something to do with the shape of the fronds. Lakeview Mountains, last Thursday.

  11. Today, December 24, I saw a wild (feral?) #sunflower (Helianthus annuus) up in the rocks. There are a lot of these up here, but they don't usually bloom this early. I suspect many of them are the result of horseback riders spilling their trail mix as they bump along. Слава Україні.
