  12. Download Festival 2025 Friday

We werenโ€™t planning on going to this yearโ€™s Download Festival, but when we saw how cheap they were on re-selling sites a couple of days before the festival, it was rude not to and saved ยฃ180.

We got ourselves to the arena and noticed that it was a lot busier than the previous year, we reckon this was mostly down to the weather as it was the complete opposite to the downpour we endured last year, as we had clear skies and a scorching sun. It was nice that we could actually see grass rather than the thick slippy mud of last year.

We tried to get hold of Mr Fox but the internet connection was non existent so trying to get a hold of each other was impossible, on the bright side we managed to catch a bit of Rise Against on the main stage, where we got to hear one of our favourite songs โ€˜Saviorโ€™.

    https://open.spotify.com/track/1vcxF91pWs9uNwDROuiCPB?si=L9mo-MqQSpK7cYjilYvoNQ%0A

    Jimmy Eat World

The first band we planned to see was Jimmy Eat World as we have never seen them before so we got a good spot to watch them. They opened up with โ€˜Painโ€™ & โ€˜Just Tonightโ€ฆโ€™ but the crowd really got going when they played their hit โ€˜Sweetnessโ€™. The rest of the 14 song set was a bit flat but picked up again with their last two songs โ€˜Bleed Americanโ€™ & the massive โ€˜In the Middleโ€™.

Overall We were a bit disappointed as they seemed a bit boring live and it felt a bit flat except when they played their hits, it was epic when they did play โ€˜In the Middleโ€™ which is a song we always wanted to hear played live.

    Weezer

During the break on the main stage we wandered around the festival  and got some food and drink before Weezer. This is the third time weโ€™ve seen them and they were a lot better than the last time, when they went on tour with Smashing Pumpkins.

They opened their set with โ€˜Hash Pipeโ€™ and โ€˜My Name Is Jonasโ€™ which was awesome and the crowd loved it!

As the sun rays continued, Rivers (Lead Singer & Guitarist) jokingly asked if we have this weather all the time in England, we donโ€™t think he could even believe the nice weather we were having.

Weezer rocked out with โ€˜Undone โ€“ The Sweater Songโ€™, โ€˜Island In The Sunโ€™ and our favourite โ€˜Pork and Beansโ€™

    https://open.spotify.com/track/7wclPheMJAUKn2njmO2s3A?si=P1kW8dxVQ4SLMweuZ-N5CQ

    McFly

Unfortunately we had to miss the end of Weezer to get to the avalanche stage and get into the tent for McFly, good job we did as it filled up very quickly. Similar to Busted the previous year, Mcfly burst onto the stage sounding more heavier for the download vibe, which was fun to see, they were shouting and swearing and even started to play Rage Against The Machineโ€™s โ€˜Killing In The Name ofโ€™, they had a lot of  fun and so did the crowd.

They performed โ€˜Where Did All the Guitars Go?โ€™ and โ€˜Star Girlโ€™ but we soon left as the temperature in the tent was getting ridiculously hot, so we walked back to the main stage and waited for the main headline for the night Green Day!

    https://open.spotify.com/track/4XJgkeu052kEf1AIfXDlHQ?si=6zTeUsWjTz2ZmN0p0WRIaA

This is the 4th time seeing them in as many years after previously watching them in Dublin, Las Vegas and Arnhem, so we decided to stay further back rather than struggling to get closer.

    Green Day

As the sun was setting Green Day started with their usual intro where Queenโ€™s โ€˜Bohemian Rhapsodyโ€™ plays before The Ramones โ€˜Blitzkrieg Bopโ€™ where Green Days Mascot โ€˜Drunk Bunnyโ€™ runs around and dances on stage before the band comes out rocking to the iconic โ€˜American Idiotโ€™ to get the punk rock party started.

Green day performed an outstanding 21 set list full of hits from the last 4 decades, including โ€˜Holidayโ€™, โ€˜Basket Caseโ€™ and โ€˜Minorityโ€™, they also did a couple of different songs as per usual like โ€˜Revolution Radioโ€™ and an old song โ€˜J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)โ€™ which was really nice.

Something magical happened when they performed โ€˜Wake Me Up When September Endsโ€™, a reminder that we had a scorching hot summers day, Billie Joe (Vocalist & Guitarist) made it rain when he sang the lyrics โ€œHere comes the rain againโ€ which really was surreal to watch. You can find videos online of this happening.

Green Day finished the set with the usual โ€˜Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)โ€™ finishing the first day of Download perfectly.

  14. Arroganz โ€“ Death Doom Punks Review By Andy-War-Hall

Once, punk ruled my heart as jealously as metal. I loved the heart-in-hand abandon and DIY ethos of acts like Rise Against, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, and Descendants,1 and though I still do metal nonetheless won out as my root genre. But punk and metal have always overlapped, and when the two offshoots of rock tango together, great things can happen.2 German death metallers Arroganz have been carrying out this uneasy marriage since 2008, dropping six testaments of metallic brutality and punkish rebellion over the years. Longtime bassist/vocalist -K- and drummer -T- are joined by the newcomer guitarist -B- for lucky number seven, Death Doom Punks, a declaration of purpose if thereโ€™s ever been one. I love the attitude, but an album canโ€™t live by โ€˜tude alone. Will Arroganzโ€™s infusion of punkish qualities into the death metal elevate Death Doom Punks, or will it merely spell death/doom for these punks?

Other bands have put death riffs over d-beats before, but Arroganz channel early Immolation/Death through Black Flag/Discharge-like hardcore grime in a way that feels particularly vital on Death Doom Punks. Whether through blistering speeds like on โ€œPain Forged Armorโ€ or diabolical groove on โ€œAnti-Ideology,โ€ Arroganzโ€™s knack for aggressive and catchy riffcraft keeps a near-constant stankface plastered over my skull. Classic death metal walking riffs meet soaring doom bass leads on โ€œDie for Nothing,โ€ while โ€œDeath Doom Punksโ€ marries hardcore and doom into a gloomy, potent combo that reminded me that Caskets Open exists. Songs on Death Doom Punks are brief and intentionally simple, but hear the spider-y basslines on โ€œEarthโ€™s Final Dose,โ€ the gigantic belting and bass-work over โ€œUnder Scarred Skin,โ€ or the gnarly death march of โ€œSpirit Arsonistโ€ and know that Arroganz supercharged everything they wrote with everything they had. Simply, Death Doom Punks is what it says it is, and itโ€™s awesome.

That Death Doom Punks is Arroganzโ€™s seventh album is no surprise, as their chemistry and chops are something else. Rhythmically, Arroganz seamlessly slide into a snarling breakdown one moment on โ€œArsenic Breathโ€ and throw down thrash stampedes the next on โ€œIncubusโ€™ Veins.โ€ -K- is a beast of a bassist and vocalist, littering Death Doom Punks with nimble and concussive bass riffs and punk-influenced leads while bellowing throaty, acerbic condemnations of society. -B- fits Arroganz like a fingerless glove, clobbering Death Doom Punks with crushing grooves on the title track,3 gnarled and disjointed leads on โ€œPain Forged Armor,โ€ and entwining leads with -K-โ€˜s bass licks on โ€œArsenic Breath.โ€ Arroganz play well together, and Death Doom Punkโ€™s organic production and surprisingly dynamic mix make it apparent. The snare pop right, the bass warbles and clicks right, the guitar is crunchy and deep and everything sits just right in the mix. Arroganz may be no-good punks, but Death Doom Punks is clearly the product of adamant professionals and experts of their craft.

Arroganzโ€™s most critical success is in knowing when to switch something up. Again, Death Doom Punksโ€™ songs are on the simple side, but Arroganz shuffle through riffs, refrains, and bridges often enough to spare the listener from boredom while affording ideas enough time to settle to save themselves from riff salad. Frequent tempo shifts electrify Death Doom Punks further, spinning โ€œSpirit Arsonistโ€โ€˜s plodding bass riff into a total death metal meltdown and opening โ€œDie for Nothingโ€โ€˜s relentless show of force in the bridge for a righteous display of bass-forward doom. Conversely, the relatively static one-two combo of โ€œIncubusโ€™ Veinsโ€ and โ€œEarths Final Doseโ€ mark Death Doom Punkโ€™s low point. Though -K-โ€˜s screams sound more cutting than usual on โ€œIncubusโ€™ Veinsโ€ and โ€œEarths Final Doseโ€ features some slick fills from -T-, they donโ€™t offer as much diversity as the other tracks and feel a bit one-track as a result. But that stretch is an exception to the rule of Death Doom Punks, which is largely a wild ride front-to-back.

Death Doom Punks sees ass, and it kicks it, no questions asked. I had never heard a lick of Arroganz before diving into Death Doom Punksโ€”the title just sounded funny to meโ€”but theyโ€™ve quickly made a fan of me over the weeks. The riffs are relentless. The hooks are huge. Did I mention the bass lines rock? Arroganz are simply a potent entity who know who they are and what they do well, and it comes through on Death Doom Punks. You should know it, too.

  20. What do you call a feeling that's like nostalgia but for a time you don't miss, and in fact hated?

I love the music of my youth, The #Offspring and #SkunkAnanzi and #GreenDay and #TheVerve and... You get it.

Which may sound odd from the guy who loves #powerwolf and #brothersofmetal.

I dont have nostalgia for that time. I hated it. But I still love the music that helped me survive it.
