  2. A job that changed me: After years of being a marriage celebrant, I became uneasy with the institution
    By Jasper Peach

My favourite part was sitting with couples, talking about their lives and why they wanted to marry. But I’m equally happy to have left it behind

  3. Heck, every band should do weddings. They're really weird and unpredictable. You'll have fun, especially when the entire wedding party stops dancing to stare at the band because the drummer decided he'd flip between downbeat on the 1 and downbeat on the 2, back and forth, because the song reminded him of Zep. This sounds strangely specific.

Also, it's never a bad idea to insure your equipment, or at least to have a GoFundMe for accidental drownings. Alcohol, celebrations, and not spilling a drop onto the band's equipment has been heard of, though probably not on this planet.

  8. When you throw a celebration, you're giving a gift to the people attending, not initiating a transaction. This applies as much to children's birthday parties as to weddings.

  9. I agree with all this. For someone so careful with my money, spending $10,000 or whatever on a wedding would make me faint. In fact @NarrelleMHarris and I had our wedding secretly in the back yard of the celebrant, with our friends Craig & Julia as witnesses. Avoided all the palaver. :)

What do you think? Have weddings become too extravagant?
    ---
"I feel wary of the spectacle that weddings have become. I don’t think it was always like this. Talk to older people and you’ll hear stories of a family dinner and then a dance in the local pub. These days – even for non-celebrities – they are often big, flashy affairs, perhaps in exotic destinations, sometimes over several days. I hear so much about arguments when people don’t get invited, even though we all know space is usually limited. I wonder why people feel it has to be like this. I wonder, too, if the opulence makes the whole thing even more emotionally charged."

Modern weddings seem to have become all about the spectacle – although, if you do take the opulent route, I still want to come
