  1. Been a while but I'm back!

Here's a super early preview of something I'm currently working on in Blender. Lots more to do (doesn't even have the subject yet) but I'm already pretty happy with where it's going.

As always, this is not AI, but my own creative output 🙏

  6. Olymp – Rising Review By Steel Druhm

You’ve heard me rant about the horrors that lurk in the promo sump come December, and how it’s mostly sub-basement black metal made by those who live on gas station pizza rolls. That kind of low-target high-risk environment is why I noticed the offering from German trve metal act Olymp and took action upon it rashly. Before we go any further, I need to point out that Olymp (I assume short of Olympus) is a truly godawful name. It also sounds like an erectile dysfunction medication. The fact that their sophomore album is titled Rising makes the comparison all the more… turgid, while also suggesting an entire marketing campaign for gas station dick pills. Also, that album art is next-level BAD. On the plus side, it’s probably not AI-generated. Poor moniker and dubious art choices aside, Olymp play a burly, beefy, 80s-centric variant of trve heavy metal with elements of Cirith Ungol and Manilla Road in the DNA. They also hit the same ground as their fellow countrymen, the long-running cheeseball power warriors, Wizard. That means Olymp teeter on that razor edge between serious and trve and over-the-top, cheddar-infected cornballery, which is a tough place to make a glorious last stand. But all hope is not lost, Olympi-Won!

After a table-setting instrumental, the Olymp ethos is unveiled on “Olive Wreath.” It involves hammering you relentlessly with beefy riffage as Sebastian Tölle delivers a rough, raw bellow that’s more shout than sing. He sits somewhere between the legendary Tim Baker of Cirith Ungol and Matias Nastolin of Desolate Realm, and his gruff style generally fits the sound and adds an extra layer of toughness. At times, “Olive Wreath” reminds me of long-forgotten German speed metal fiends Iron Angel and Deathrow, and the guitar phrasing often veers heavily into Cirith Ungol territory. These are all big pluses in my book, and if they gave me a whole album of this meaty broth, I’d happily overlook the issues discussed in the intro. “Thread of Life” is another iron fist to the cranium with burly, simplistic riffs pounding your brain nonstop, and it’s not far removed from what classic Gravedigger did/still do.

Olymp’s style is exceptionally simple, direct, and old school, and when it works, you get cuts like the slam-banging “Orpheus,” which riffs hard enough to shake teeth loose and addle your brain gelatin. The same goes for album closer “White Rose” which is laden with harmonies and flourishes that strongly recall Cirith Ungol. It’s an effective metal chestnut with a nice touch of melancholy. Not every cut pulls off the ancient alchemy, though. “Fire and Brimstone” comes off as really old Saxon and off-brand Manowar sutured together badly, and it’s dumb as hell. “Titan War” is aggressive and punchy, with Tölle sounding more like Tim Baker than usual, but things run too long, and the last few minutes feel tedious. “Olymp” also suffers from a late-song lag. While several songs extend too far considering the number of ideas presented, most tracks manage to avoid the bloat contagion. At 40 minutes, Rising feels like a quick enough spin, and the aggression levels keep it humming.

The biggest snag for Olymp is Sebastian Tölle’s vocals, which are too limited and one-note. As a poor man’s Tim Baker, his raw, ragged shouting works best on the most aggressive numbers, but as the album drags on, his delivery becomes more and more irritating. He isn’t able to elevate the material consistently, and you find yourself wishing he had another gear. The guitar work by Tölle and Armin Amboss reeks of the 80s trve metal era, and they do borrow a lot from Cirith Ungol and Manilla Road while beefing up the tones for maximum impact. Their playing is a highlight and routinely drops nostalgia glitter on those who grew up in the 80s.

Olymp play a style I’m predisposed to enjoy, and I do appreciate most of what they offer on Rising. If they could smooth out some of the rough spots in their songsmithing and improve the vocals, Olymp could become a worthy opponent for the likes of Eternal Champion and Dragon Skull. As things stand, they’re more a rowdy street thug than a noble barbarian. Here’s to rising on command!

  17. Who or what do we blindly trust with our #health? 🤔

    White Coats or Black Boxes?

Some thoughts on AI, medicine, human judgment, and how #AI could help us think more instead of less.

Reflections from a conversation with #healthcare leaders on trust, transparency, and who really benefits from AI in #medicine

I grew up in a world where you didn't question your doctor. You didn't ask about lab results. You didn't research your medications. "Doctor's orders" was gospel.

My grandmother never saw her own test results. She wouldn't have known what to do with them anyway.

We like to think we've evolved past that. But have we? Or have we just traded blind trust in white coats for blind trust in #algorithms?

That's the question that kept surfacing in my head after this Expert Panel Discussion I hosted with Sean Martin, CISSP and an extraordinary group of people:

Dr. Robert Pearl, M.D. (former CEO, The Permanente Medical Group, Inc.)

    Robert Havasy (HIMSS)

John Sapp Jr (Texas Mutual Insurance Company)

    Jim St. Clair (Altarum)

    Robert Booker (HITRUST)

We gathered to discuss AI in healthcare. What emerged was something deeper: a reckoning with how we've always delegated medical decisions—and whether AI might actually force us to become smarter, more analytical, more inquisitive about our own health.

Here's my theory: AI doesn't have to make us dumber. It could make us think more, not less. But only if we choose to engage. Only if we demand transparency. Only if we resist trading one form of blind trust for another.

400,000 people die annually from misdiagnoses in America. That's not AI failure—that's human failure we've learned to accept.

The question isn't whether AI will transform healthcare. It already is.

The question is: Will we finally start asking questions?

About our doctors AND our algorithms?

Then tell me—what kind of trust are we building? Who benefits? Who bears the risk?

Let's keep exploring what it means to be human in this Hybrid Analog Digital Society.

  18. I decided that I'm going to share on here the artists I show my students.

Every week, I start class with a showcase of an artist related to the keyword for that week.

Since I have been teaching for a couple weeks now, I have two to start with!

Hatis Noit is a Japanese vocalist living in the UK - she uses mostly just her voice for her music.

The video is not AI, it's motion design!

Oooh, neat question! I remember pondering this when I was a teenager in the 90s.
I actually realized early on that the standard ISO date format is the best: YYYY-MM-DD (although I didn't use hyphens at the time, as stardates don't have hyphens), and started using YYYYMMDD for my digital diary way back then (long lost, sadly, or maybe not SO sadly, if you knew me as a teenager, lol)

But the canonical system of #Stardate as of the TNG era was 40000 + 1000 * season_number + "day", where the "day" was something like (day_of_year / 365 * 999)

So, since season 1 was 1987, the "current" stardate would be something like 2025-1987 + 41 = 79000

As far as the non-sequential order of TOS stardates goes, this is because NBC did not air the episode in the order they were made. They were produced sequentially, but not aired sequentially.

The other problem is that the stardates are tied to the beginning of TNG seasons (in the fall), and not the beginning of calendar years. That makes things more difficult, but I guess the best solution would be to use the number of days since Encounter at Farpoint aired? (1987-09-28)

Here's what I came up with using bash, bc (which you may need to install) and awk:

    $ echo "( $(date +%s) - $(date +%s -d 1987-09-28) ) / 365.25 / 24 / 3600 * 1000 + 41000" |bc -l |awk '{printf "%.1f\n", $1}'

A quick check shows a disturbing variance in the stated infection methods.

Is the old science "terror of the #Miasma superstition" is still in play? Even after #Covid #ItsAirborne? Except for #Wikipedia it's at most "droplets", not aerosols, not airborne.

WHO: "bite of infected vector fleas",
"contact with infectious bodily fluids or contaminated materials", " inhalation of respiratory droplets/small particles from a patient".

This started out as a photo of pretty pink and green birthday flowers from a few years ago. I sketched and digitally hand painted it in #Rebelle using their fabulous #watercolor brushes, Wacom tablet and the art pen. Some help from #CorelPainter and #Photoshop, too. Not Ai.

The game builder is now complete: it creates a build of the game encoding & copying the assets from my work directory to a build folder, the folder's name is the current date & time.
I have to adjust some in-game loaders to better handle encoded data.
Encoded data does not aim to encrypt the game assets but just to abfuscate them a bit.
After the release I plan to publish all the sources & docs.
    Docs are written with #trilium
