Finding a sleek, distraction free #markdown editor for #Android is rough, especially when paired with a cloud storage provider that isn't #Google.
My candidates were #OpenNote and #Quilpad, but both take away power from the user by preventing them from managing their own files.
Both refuse to work with the Android cloud provider backend, to a point where I can't even import my MD files from #Jottacloud.
One has experimental support for #Nextcloud tho, which smells like #vendorlockin.

It's one of the main three reasons mastodon was left so far behind by the other Fediverse server platforms.
The other two are that ridiculous, default, hardcoded paltry 500 character count limit - you've done a lot of workarounds (setting pseudo max character counts for all links, etc.) to avoid changing that to a simple configuration by admins on running instances - and that, more than anything else I think, has been the impetus that has spawned so many exceedingly popular forks.
The third item is that you simply don't have any support for other text formats - like #Markdown, when almost all other major Fediverse platforms do, some of them for even longer than tootsuite/mastodon has been in existence.
You don't have any support for local-only posts either - a very popular and requested feature that you've virtually ignored.
The ability to edit posts without breaking threads that came in with this most recent release (4.0.0) was a few years behind most other Fediverse server platforms. Rhetorical question: Why did you wait so long to implement that?
But the most glaring, um... I'll call it an egregious offense, is that much like Canonical did when they scraped almost all mentions of "Linux" from the Ubuntu websites, you too have done so with respect to #Fediverse on your official brand marketing websites - this has resulted in enormous damage to the community, serving to fracture it to some measurable degree, to the benefit of your "brand", but at the expense of the community at large by confusing the consumer.
That last item, I don't know if you even realize the level of confusion this has resulted in with respect to all of the new Fediverse adoptees that actually think mastodon is a network - it is not. It's, "The Fediverse", Eugen, that's what the term is for our #ActivityPub powered network, and that interview you did with #Time_Magazine last month did not mention Fediverse even once. Not even one time.
As a well known, de facto spokesman for the Fediverse community, you have, if not a fiduciary obligation, at least a moral duty to fairly represent and promote the Fediverse community at large.
So now that funding isn't an issue for you so long as you listen to where the money is coming from, you're being told to do all of these things, and to be certain, you will. You've even announced a public roadmap to coincide with this realization that you now must cater to the community and it's desires, instead of dictating the constraints under which the community must, and will function... at least those who erroneously only perceive mastodon as the only extant option.
That's a mixed blessing. Development will now include work towards the things that the people actually want, but you'll continue to brand your product as if it is the network instead of getting the language and message right that it's simply one Fediverse server platform amongst all of the other (often more appropriate and) capable server platforms.
So yes, quote posts are popular, and with utility. Practically every other platform has it too. You will implement it, so just go and do it now, because it really isn't even your choice after all.
Well that's my 2¢ 🙂
I hope that helps!

Are you curious to see what constraint-free external #Markdown files as course content can look like with the #MoodleLMS ?
With https://Docsify-This.net you can quickly do so, and without any website setup, here are some examples👇🏼

Happy 90th birthday to #MarkDamon, the American film / TV actor and producer, born in Chicago #OnThisDay. A charismatic leading man for Roger Corman, notably in #HouseOfUsher (1960) and opposite Boris Karloff in 'The Wurdulak' segment of Bava's #BlackSabbath (1963), he found plentiful work in Europe, including #TheYoungTheEvilAndTheSavage (1968) and #CryptOfTheLivingDead (1973).

@kate Great idea!
The order is still very unintuitive because there are URL links without descriptions as well and why should we start with the optional part? 🫣🙃
My recommendation for many reasons:

Federated Replies and Reactions in Madblog
Engage with the Web from plain text files
Madblog is founded on a simple principle: a blog is just a collection of #markdown files in a folder. No databases, no logins, no client-side bloat — just files.
The recently implemented support for both Webmentions and ActivityPub add an extra appeal to this approach: now those text files can federate, they can send mentions to Wordpress blogs or Mastodon accounts, and you can visualize mentions, comments and reactions from other corners of the Web directly under your articles.
But after receiving in the past few days a bunch of reactions on my blog that I couldn't interact with, which forced me to fall back on my standard Fediverse account to send replies and likes, I've decided to take the "everything is a file" philosophy a step further.
Now from #madblog you can also reply to comments and react to posts across the Fediverse - all from plain text files in your content folder.
Replying to Comments
When someone comments on your article from Mastodon or another ActivityPub-compatible services, their message appears on your blog.
Now you can also respond directly from your blog.
Or you can reply to any other post on the Fediverse or mention anyone, without those posts cluttering your blog's front page (I've learned to avoid this fatal design mistake made by e.g. Medium).
How it works
Create a Markdown file under
replies/<article-slug>/:[//]: # (reply-to: https://mastodon.social/@alice/123456789) Thanks for the kind words, Alice! I'm glad the tutorial helped. @alice@mastodon.socialSave the file, and Madblog automatically:
- Publishes your reply to the Fediverse as a threaded response
- Notifies Alice on her Mastodon instance
- Displays the reply on your blog, nested under her original comment
Your reply lives in your content folder. Just like with your articles, you can version replies and reactions on git, synchronize them over SyncThing or Nextcloud Notes, or run some analysis scripts on them that would just operate on text files.
Replying to replies
Conversations can go as deep as you want. Reply to a reply by pointing
reply-toat the previous message's URL:[//]: # (reply-to: https://mastodon.social/@alice/123456790) Great question! I'll write a follow-up post about that. @alice@mastodon.socialThe threading is preserved both on your blog and across the Fediverse.
[Example of a nested thread rendered on Madblog]
(I hope that @ and @ won't mind for using a screenshot from their conversation on my blog 🙂)
Remember to mention your mentions
An important implementation note: if you're replying to someone else's ActivityPub post, it's important that you also mention them in the reply, otherwise your reply will be rendered under their comment but they may not be notified.
Usually you don't have to worry about this on Mastodon because the UI will automatically pre-fill the participating accounts in a sub-thread when you hit Reply.
But this is something to keep in mind when your posts are just text files.
Your replies are articles in their own right
Even though anything under
replies/won't appear on your blog's home page, it doesn't mean that it must be rendered just like a humble rectangle in a crowded comments section.By clicking View full reply you get redirected to a separate page where the reply is rendered as a blog article, and its comments sections consists in the sub-tree of the reactions that spawned from that specific reply.
[Example of a Madblog reply rendered as a blog article, with its own sub-thread of reactions]
Liking Posts
Sometimes a reply is too much — you just want to show appreciation. Now you can "like" any post on the Fediverse with a simple metadata header.
Standalone likes
Create a file under
replies/with just alike-ofheader:[//]: # (like-of: https://mastodon.social/@bob/987654321)This publishes a
Likeactivity to the Fediverse. Bob sees the notification, and your blog records the interaction.Like and comment
Want to like and say something? Combine both:
[//]: # (like-of: https://mastodon.social/@bob/987654321) [//]: # (reply-to: https://mastodon.social/@bob/987654321) This is such a great point! Bookmarking for later. @bob@mastodon.socialBob gets both the like and your reply as a threaded response.
Unlisted Posts
Not everything needs to appear on your blog's front page. Files under
replies/withoutreply-toandlike-ofheaders become "unlisted" posts — they're published to the Fediverse but don't clutter your blog index.Perfect for quick thoughts, threads, or conversations that don't warrant a full article.
[//]: # (title: Thoughts of the day) Quick thought: I've been experimenting with writing all my Fediverse posts as Markdown files. It's oddly satisfying to `git log` my social media history.Guestbook Replies
Your blog's guestbook works the same way. Reply to guestbook entries by placing files under
replies/_guestbook/:[//]: # (reply-to: https://someone.blog/mention/123) @alice@example.com welcome! Thanks for stopping by.Editing and Deleting
Changed your mind? Edit the file and an
Updateactivity is sent. Delete the file and your reply is removed from the Fediverse too.Accidentally liked something? Remove the
like-ofline (or delete the file) and anUndo Likeis published.Your content, your rules.
Getting Started
- Enable ActivityPub in your
config.yaml:
link: https://blog.example.com enable_activitypub: true activitypub_username: blog # Only specify these if you want your ActivityPub domain to be different from your blog domain # activitypub_link: https://example.com # activitypub_domain: example.com- Install Madblog
- From
pip:
pip install madblog- From Docker:

<data-dir>/markdown):
- From a
pipinstallation:
madblog /path/to/data- From Docker:
docker run -it \ -p 8000:8000 \ -v "/path/to/config.yaml:/etc/madblog/config.yaml" \ -v "/path/to/data:/data" \ quay.io/blacklight/madblog- Any text file you create under
markdown/becomes a blog article. Any text file you create underreplies/becomes an unlisted post, a reply or a like reaction.

"If mark_up_ is complicated, then the opposite of that complexity must be… markd_own_. This kind of solution, where it’s so smart it seems obvious in hindsight, is key to Markdown’s success. John worked to make a format that was so simple that anybody could pick it up in a few minutes, and powerful enough that it could help people express pretty much anything that they wanted to include while writing on the internet. At a technical level, it was also easy enough to implement that John could write the code himself to make it work with Movable Type, his publishing tool of choice. (Within days, people had implemented the same feature for most of the other blogging tools of the era; these days, virtually every app that you can type text into ships with Markdown support as a feature on day one.)
Prior to launch, John had enlisted our mutual friend, the late, dearly missed Aaron Swartz, as a beta tester. In addition to being extremely fluent in every detail of the blogging technologies of the time, Aaron was, most notably, seventeen years old. And though Aaron’s activism and untimely passing have resulted in him having been turned into something of a mythological figure, one of the greatest things about Aaron was that he could be a total pain in the ass, which made him terrific at reporting bugs in your software. (One of the last email conversations I ever had with Aaron was him pointing out some obscure bugs in an open source app I was working on at the time.) No surprise, Aaron instantly understood both the potential and the power of Markdown, and was a top-tier beta tester for the technology as it was created. His astute feedback helped finely hone the final product so it was ready for the world, and when Markdown quietly debuted in March of 2004, it was clear that text files around the web were about to get a permanent upgrade."

Fediverse instance RAM use?
A quick comparison, since I am researching new and better browser to use. Bravo is doing really well, surprisingly.
Pinafore client, in one PWA saved tab. Using 83 MB to have koyu.space loaded.
Mastodon default web client, opening a mastodon instance in a Bravo tab. Using 109 MB for itself.
For comparison purposes, other frequent programmes I use:
Slowly app for pen pals; running from their server, as a web client. Using 94 MB.
And Reddit, via their modern design site, where I am regular user, taking 120 MB for one single tab open.
#Pinafore rules. #GlitchSocial is the best #mastodon, no doubts.
#MarkDown, do you have it? Koyu.space does. See above. 👍😜🙂

A $3000 fine - let's see, death toll of RoboDebt remains secret, but 2000 has been estimated.
If so the fine would be about $1.50 for each RoboDebt triggered death.
As an excercise in supposedly recreating confidence in government, this insulting stuff from #MarkDreyfus is a garbage fail.

For historical reasons, I mostly use #Markdown for my writing, although I've started to use #AsciiDoc (through #AsciiDoctor) more and more these days.
One of the things I #amWriting is intended to be in a more “playwright” style, so I've been looking around for stuff more focused on #playwriting (for either theater or screen, I'm not picky at the moment.).
So I came across #FountainIO
https://fountain.io/ which is actually … pretty close to what I was thinking about. -
@markd @becomingwisest @jschauma I need to get this article republished on how to self-service enable #IPv6 on existing #Akamai configurations:
https://web.archive.org/web/20220913213213/https://developer.akamai.com/blog/2020/05/04/enable-ipv6-your-edge-hostnames -
@markd @becomingwisest @jschauma #Akamai has made #IPv6 dualstack the default for around a decade for new customer configurations. I talk some about why customers don't dual-stack (and why they should!) in https://www.akamai.com/blog/trends/10-years-since-world-ipv6-launch
Many customer sites have been on long enough to pre-date the switch of the default, but we do still see some rate of opting out. Some top reasons include:
* Operationally conservative and lack of understanding of the value ("if it isn't broke don't fix it" or "seems safer"), or have trouble justifying the effort to make the change safely with testing.
* Lack of support in their log processing and/or header processing and/or advanced business logic for IP handling. For example, companies may be using a third-party anti-fraud product which doesn't support IPv6. With Akamai's large base of Enterprise customers this is frustratingly common and the "just hash the IPv6 to an IPv4" makes things worse rather than helping.
* Auth tokens bound to IP addresses. (eg, setting it via IPv4 and validating via IPv6 fails, or vice-versa -- see https://www.akamai.com/blog/developers/why-you-shouldn-t-tie-ip-addresses-to-tokens )
* Custom or uncommon clients which break in the presence of IPv6. This is rare but I've seen it, for example some local streaming provider may have a user base with old Smart TVs that interact poorly with some ISP's somewhat broken IPv6 setup. I hear this less now, but it used to be common even a few years ago.Note that it's worth checking both the "www" and apex name version of some of these, as in some cases the apex example.com name is IPv4-only but redirects to a dualstack "www" name due to CNAME-at-the-apex limitations.
