Una falla en la actualización de seguridad de Microsoft ha dejado una puerta abierta para que hackers vinculados a Rusia ejecuten ataques sin necesidad de interacción del usuario, poniendo en riesgo datos sensibles en toda Europa (Fuente Akamai).

La seguridad de Windows se enfrenta a una crisis de confianza tras el descubrimiento de un parche defectuoso. Según un informe de Akamai, una corrección lanzada inicialmente en febrero para mitigar una vulnerabilidad en SmartScreen resultó ser insuficiente. Este parche incompleto ha dado lugar a una nueva vulnerabilidad crítica (identificada como CVE-2026-32202), que permite ataques del tipo «Zero-Click» (sin clics). En estos ataques, el simple hecho de que un usuario visualice una carpeta que contenga un archivo malicioso permite al atacante forzar una autenticación automática con su servidor, robando las credenciales del usuario sin que este se dé cuenta.

El grupo de ciberespionaje ruso APT28 (también conocido como Fancy Bear) ha sido identificado como el principal explotador de esta brecha. Los investigadores señalan que el grupo ha estado utilizando archivos de acceso directo (.lnk) modificados para saltarse las protecciones de Windows y ejecutar código remoto. Al aprovechar el mecanismo de procesamiento de iconos de Windows Explorer, los atacantes logran que el sistema de la víctima envíe su «hash» de autenticación NTLM a un servidor remoto, lo que facilita el robo de identidad y el movimiento lateral dentro de redes corporativas y gubernamentales, especialmente en Ucrania y países de la Unión Europea.

Microsoft ha incluido una nueva corrección para este fallo específico en su tanda de parches de abril de 2026. Sin embargo, la persistencia de estas brechas subraya la complejidad de parchear sistemas heredados como Windows Shell y el framework MSHTML. Akamai ha publicado un nuevo informe sobre el estado de Internet (SOTI) en el que se analiza cómo los bots de IA están redefiniendo el ecosistema del sector editorial digital. El informe Proteger el sector editorial: navegando por la era de los bots de IA revela que la actividad de los bots de IA aumentó un 300 % en 2025, y el sector de los medios de comunicación, que incluye a las editoriales, ocupa el segundo lugar a nivel mundial con un 13 % del tráfico de bots de IA (Fuente Akamai).

@edbilodeau @eloy There was a ton accomplished my #MIT Project Athena / IS&T (and Project Andrew at CMU) by staff members in the 80s and 90s, with things like Kerberos coming out as a result. Lots of this was to fill niches in Workstation software. Ironically some of these underly some Microsoft protocols. Student groups like MIT's SIPB were also tightly coupled into this

Lots of that staff left for various reasons, and universities shifted to using off the shelf products. Sadly MIT as a whole is now way behind (eg, very little IPv6) and I suspect the same is true of other schools.

That said, the people leaving schools to go work in industry had a huge impact on how many large Internet companies operate. Aspects of the MIT network certainly influenced how #Akamai was architected in the early days, and some of those patterns seeded how some of the other largest tech companies designed things.

Many customer sites have been on long enough to pre-date the switch of the default, but we do still see some rate of opting out. Some top reasons include:

* Operationally conservative and lack of understanding of the value ("if it isn't broke don't fix it" or "seems safer"), or have trouble justifying the effort to make the change safely with testing.
* Lack of support in their log processing and/or header processing and/or advanced business logic for IP handling. For example, companies may be using a third-party anti-fraud product which doesn't support IPv6. With Akamai's large base of Enterprise customers this is frustratingly common and the "just hash the IPv6 to an IPv4" makes things worse rather than helping.
* Auth tokens bound to IP addresses. (eg, setting it via IPv4 and validating via IPv6 fails, or vice-versa -- see https://www.akamai.com/blog/developers/why-you-shouldn-t-tie-ip-addresses-to-tokens )
* Custom or uncommon clients which break in the presence of IPv6. This is rare but I've seen it, for example some local streaming provider may have a user base with old Smart TVs that interact poorly with some ISP's somewhat broken IPv6 setup. I hear this less now, but it used to be common even a few years ago.

Note that it's worth checking both the "www" and apex name version of some of these, as in some cases the apex example.com name is IPv4-only but redirects to a dualstack "www" name due to CNAME-at-the-apex limitations.

It's fun to dunk on #Cloudflare. And those of us who've taken a principled stand against using that service might smirk a little.

But outages happen. #Fastly has them, #Akamai has them, #AWS has them, #Azure has them, #GCP has them. No human system is perfect and will break at some point. The measure of a solution is in the effectiveness of their response. So far, it looks like Cloudflare recovered pretty quickly; I don't doubt that they have good systems and competent professionals in place to manage these events.

It does however cast yet another light on the detrimental consolidation of our infrastructure and should serve as a reminder to seek out decentralization where we can.

@Mer__edith Even if it is necessary to keep a central control plane and centrally managed relay systems, there's no reason why you need to run in a single cloud or on a hyperscalar. Especially with the end-to-end trust model that #Signal has, the security requirements on control and relay nodes is lower.

There are also other non-hyperscalar clouds which would fit some of these needs. For example, the #Akamai Cloud (formerly #Linode) has been expanding its global footprint precisely for the use-case of taking on applications needing global footprint and performance but without being tied to a hyperscaler.

Using tools such as Terraform and Kubernetes can help orchestrate multi-provider / cross-platform deployments.
