Almost 4 years ago Mastodon, and by extension the Fediverse, became and continues to be essentially my sole social media platform.
A significant factor in this was when I discovered Pinafore and immediately fell in love. You know when you use software that just *feels* right, like Corel Paradox or Turbo Pascal and so on?
I was using Paradox daily at a former employer sixteen years after Corel ceased active development, and it could very well still be in use there today. Pinafore quickly became as vital for me as Paradox was for the more than eight years I worked there.
Unfortunately Pinafore's creator archived the project, but it lives on in various forks, of which I hopped from one to the next as each one eventually became archived, or dormant, or disappeared altogether (Anyone remember Mahoot?).
It's almost like the project is cursed, because I know of at least half a dozen Pinafore variants that all started out with great intentions and noticeable activity but eventually fell silent.
At least.. a year ago maybe? a bug was introduced somewhere along the line that caused buffers to hang if any posts fall under a "hide with warning" filter were found. Watching the spinning circle of dots endlessly loading, refreshing because *sometimes* that fixed things, as it triggered a BPD meltdown in me countless times.
Other issues or lacking vital new features (translation, editing a post, etc.) caused me to very reluctantly try other front-ends but I just couldn't deal with it. I even tried consciously *forcing* myself to use the other ones and despite the aforementioned buffering problem, I found Pinafore and its successors *less* maddening than these other interfaces. (No offense to the other front-ends; they're all amazing projects and work great for some people, but for whatever reasons they just don't work well for me.)
As I mentioned before, the Pinafore-style interface just fit my needs perfectly. So I just continued to be frustrated because I didn't have the knowledge/experience.
Yesterday, however I discovered @dome 's new Pinafore fork, Zocial. (Pinafore -> Semaphore -> Enafore -> Zocial). It's available at https://zocial.ztfr.eu.
True, Zocial is generated using Claude, but this seems like the only practical opportunity for us to have to attain a fully-operational Pinafore-style interface. I honestly believe it's a matter of accessibility because no other front-end has given me the freedom to learn about the Fediverse more than Pinafore.
Maybe I'm being a selfish, neurotic, myopic Goldilocks. I have no rebuttal for those accusations and I apologize for disappointing anyone, but the Fedi is basically my makeshift warm line and I need to keep that as easy for me to use as possible because I can't function without it.
Yes, I know.. "just don't use it!" Yes, I realize if Nolan Lawson had never developed Pinafore, life would go on. Life would also continue if we'd never invented defibrillators, but they sure are handy sometimes.
@dome fixed the above-mentioned bug, and a couple of others, in a matter of minutes today. It feels like finally being rid of a sore tooth. I hadn't realized just how infuriated I was becoming rather than coping.
Look, if someone wants to fork Enafore and repair the bugs that Claude already took care of, I'll almost certainly follow because with all due respect to @dome, I trust a human programmer more than I trust AI output.
However, that just doesn't seem to be possible. We're humans, and humans (understandably) have lives that aren't always congruent to dev plans.
But I personally *need* this interface to work. I love it. Surely I can't be the only one either, with so many people making forks of Pinafore.
So.. it's up to you dear reader (if you're even still awake) to decide if you want to try Zocial, but as for me I've already jumped head-first into it, slop or not.

This is slop, slopware, but there are no active forks of Pinafore and even though the original interface has improved greatly using keyboard navigation, I don’t think there will be anything like the clean and elegant and very accessible Pinafore I still have no clue if this maintains the accessibility of its predecessor but it appears to be an active fork of Enafore. Dome/Zocial: A beautifully refined fediverse client — built for the edges of the Mastodon ecosystem. - Zocial - Zeitfresser Gitea Server https://git.ztfr.eu/Dome/Zocial #Enafore #Pinafore #Mastodon #Fediverse

Hi Fediverse,
I am looking for some beta testers for my #enfore #mastodon / #fediverse #client #Zocial.
So if you are interested in some awesome new features and if you like the aesthetics of #pinafore, just check it out here:
Instance:
https://zocial.social
Repo:
https://git.ztfr.eu/dome/zocial
Support & Development Chat:
https://look.ztfr.eu/#/#support:ztfr.eu
Disclaimer: For anyone who thinks that this is only AI slope I can tell you that I am not a programmer but a legal professional with interest in foss. So yes, I have used claude to help me here. However I took some time and effort to think those features through as well as the ux enhancements. So take it or leave it I guess. 😅 -

I am looking for someone who wants to jointly work on a new fork of enafore (a Mastodon/fediverse client based on pinafore). I have some really nice ideas here but implementation costs time and also experience. Maybe some of you are interested contributing and supporting these ideas.
If you want to follow the progress, just check out the repo: https://git.ztfr.eu/Dome/Enafore
I will create a roadmap to explain what features I am aiming for in the next couple of days.

oh hell yeah https://enafore.social
this'll make browsing mastodon on the jankbook (2012 chromebook) feasible

I think we've finally reached the point where the default Mastodon web app is better than all the alternative web apps, at least on desktop;
* Pinafore is abandoned, various forks got more development, but Enafore.social isn't working reliably for me in LibreWolf
* Elk.zone is still alpha, and does annoying things like the popup when I copy text, and not letting me move @mentions
* Phanpy.social prevents me navigating the full thread while replying

Bin von #Pinafore als Webend zu #Enafore gewechselt. Sieht exakt identisch aus. #GoToSocial

Well, shit, I guess on Pinafore "delete and redraft" just deletes if you hit cancel, rather than leaving the toot intact.
Somehow #Pinafore thinks I can't edit posts, which used to be true but isn't anymore.

I wish I had #fediverse (#mastodon #pleroma #akkoma #friendica #hubzilla #iceshrimp #snac #lemmy #mbin #kbin #piefed ) #client , I mean like #ELK #lmst #pl-fe #phanpy #tooty #sengi #pinafore #halcyon . That would allow me to sort my subscription feed & browse sorted feed, to see ONLY relevant posts (on topic updates follow-up's?).
Well, the mastodon feature of "LISTS" tries something similiar by allowing to make a sorted list of people\subscription, sorted by your custom category/topic. But it doesn't include #tags. Each #tag must be browsed separately, individually, manually, and there is no feature of list of tags in mastodon.
Lemmy, mbin, kbin, piefed and other #reddit #forum like #activitypub implementations allow you to have topics-threads, but each thread does not replicate very well across multiple servers/instances. Can't be easely crossposted ( by pinging multiple category-bots). And doesn't replicate & easily-searchable as classic mastodon #tags.Other things I don't like:
- twitter like reposts. they make you feel you subscribed not to the original "reposter" friend, but to "reposted content" that you never subscribed for. the #f2f p2p architecture of #scuttlebot (#scuttlebutt) kinda eliminates that, they don't have nor show reposts. you see there only original posts, original content, of friends you follow. Kinda helps to slow down the mind from informational overflow. You can opt out to see posts of friend's friends, if you want more. Tags are also supported there.
- threads consist only of information aggretator url sharing in reddit like clones. Without having OP OC like in bbs|AgoraRoad , they just silo you to clickbait to other web sites. -

Despite making some major progress on the codebase inherited from Pinafore (adding post editing), Enafore.social seems to have become really buggy recently. Are there any Pinafore forks still under active development?

I went to #pinafore ~ pinafore.social after, like, months and it just presented me with my timeline and the new post interface immediately without any hassle.
I think it's not even supposed to be working, I thought we had migrated to some other fork? But somehow it's working fine at first glance.

Ooof.. I cannot recommend #enafore and its #pinafore siblings enough. After accidentally hitting the Escape key after spending half an hour drafting a post, the relief of opening the compose window and having everything still be there after is quite an adrenaline rush.
Yes, I know, if I just used a text editor or word processor with autosave I wouldn't need to worry about it.
But I'm lazy and like the enafore interface. So.. pfffth.

CW: TIL that in enafore
you can pin your bookmarks instead of the local timeline.
Press 4 to select "Community", <tab> to the pushpin next to "Bookmarks", <space> to select that.
Now your bookmarks appear in column 3, replacing the local timeline (which I no longer use).
This feature has existed since forever, probably already in pinafore, but I only really used it just now.

#Fediverse-Client #Pinafore

@zrzz yeah that's the thing: keyboard control should provide keyboard control 🤣 it's Ashby's law of requisite variety!
#pinafore is the same, only I can leave the cursor where the NextPage button will be and click with my thumb, unless I'd bumped it.
It's just annoying and these days A LOT of new apps do this, strand essential common function to Carpal Tunnel Land.
Why is this? Do I blame Vue or React? Is it now really so hard to do? I'm just curious because it's ubiquitous 😅

#mastodonel 2.0.0 has features you would find in any #Mastodon client and a few nifty things like Recommendeds, but I can't find the key that used to open READ MORE links to expand content (#Pinafore lacks this too, but for paging down) I thought it was 'x' but apparently not.
#Pinafore is the only webclient working on my Firefox/Ubuntu; official app loses focus and number keys won't restore it & why show Toot textarea all the time? (any keystroke not bound selects it). Sadly it doesn't Edit.

Revisiting #Pinafore for the linux desktop and so far so good, but… is there no hotkey for the 'More' button at the *bottom* of a list? '.' only goes to the top, but if I'm catching up after an absence, I would refresh with . and then scroll *down* (infinite scroll turned off) until I hit a mouse-only wall.

Just got @kitsune working on a small scale #hetzner VPS and things are running very smoothly. Posting via #pinafore works but I didn't play around with #forgejo or any other #OIDC providers yet. I got it #docker|ized and want to try to automate deployment with #terraform and #helm if I find the time next week.
Kudos to the contributors, I'm excited to see where the project heads in the near future!

@rwa Yeah, I'm really just looking at one for me, so with #GoToSocial adding editing in the next version, I think this is the way I'm leaning, although I'll have to figure out a web frontend, too.
I think I may be one of the only people who doesn't love #Phanpy. To be clear, I don't hate it. It's just a bit cluttered for my tastes.
What other frontends are people using? It sounds like #Pinafore development has been discontinued? Maybe #Elk?

Does anyone know if there's an actively maintained fork of the @pinafore / @semaphore fediverse web app?

Just discovered Pinafore a third-party mastodon client for web. I will gonna give an eye.
«Pinafore is open-source software created by Nolan Lawson and distributed under the AGPL License.»
