Today, 5.0.0 of the Asciidoctor Gradle plugin suite has been released, and with that I have officially stepped down as the chief maintainer of the project.

I've been actively working on this project for over 10yrs, and it is time for someone to step up.

I'll still be around to help with things, but I am not going to be reactive to bugfix requests in general

Is there really no way with AsciiDoctor of defining a macro that expands to some token sequence with substitutions of the arguments without writing some Ruby / Java / JavaScript that is then not portable across implementations?

I have moved the documentation from asciidoctor to markdown (using Hugo instead of a self-created static site generator). Also, reorganized the structure and fixed a lot of wording.

It now builds in less than a second and has live preview, which makes it much nicer to edit..

has anyone gotten #Antora with #asciidoctor #bibtex to work? I would really love to use Antora as a front end for some kind of paper with lots of citations.

All I get is an error about #opaque in #npm I cannot get fixed.

Does anyone know how I could add Asciidoctor to a Flatpak manifest? I tried using the Flatpak RubyGems Module Generator, but I don't know if what it generates is correct; the script isn't actively maintained, and I suspect it's not working properly.

The idea here is to use Asciidoctor as a subprocess to convert content that will be displayed in the application.

I'm going to have to write my own #AsciiDoctor-based static site generator, right?

I still haven't found anything that fits my use case, coming from #ikiwiki, which I want to leave because it's slow, written in Perl (not my favorite language) and doesn't integrate well with AsciiDoctor.

#Antora manages to both be overengineered for my use case *and* miss essential features like feed generation. Also node.js, no thanks

Coming from #MkDocs on #ReadTheDocs , I think about migrating our projects user manual to #Asciidoc using #asciidoctor and/or #antora .

But I wonder if there is a service like #readthedocs for #asciidoc based manuals available for #OpenSource or #foss projects.

Important is that those platforms do support @Codeberg (#forgejo aka #gita ) code hosting, instead of Microsoft GitHub.

@hastur that sucks, I hate $m word with a passion, I changed over to using markdown language for all content now known as #asciidoctor and use templates to create letters that work with $m crap.

From my recent conversation with @trwnh (<https://mastodon.social/@trwnh/113377796235320764>) I'm getting the impression that if I managed to create a well-integrated #AsciiDoctor-centered blogging system to replace my #Ikiwiki setup I wouldn't be the only one using it. And I don't even mind #Ruby as a programming language. Now if I only had a few extra 24 hours in the day, I could even get to it.

Hello #fedifriends, I've just realized that #asciidoc & #asciidoctor aren't the same thing, so I was using the documentation of asciidoctor and processing the my document with asciidoc… 🤦‍♂️

I don't know who came late, but the choice of the name is very confused, so now I'd like to know what the #fediversians like to use if asciidoc or asciidoctor, or at least you recommend.

The point is some stuff aren't working because perhaps aren't for ascidoc on the other end asciidoctor is very aggressive on the web search, so unless you don't exclude it from the search it completely eclipses the other one.

@nano I was really happy with Bing Chat today. I have been trying out how, using the Ruby API, to insert an inline into a block in #AsciiDoctor (this should be easy in any structured document system, but the API docs are almost nonexistent). Bing Chat gave me an approach that I hadn't considered and that looked right.

Unfortunately, it was complete nonsense and didn't work. I thought it was close enough that it would lead me to the right approach, but unfortunately it wasn't even close to something usable.

I, for one, am also a happy AsciiDoc and #asciidoctor user

For historical reasons, I mostly use #Markdown for my writing, although I've started to use #AsciiDoc (through #AsciiDoctor) more and more these days.

One of the things I #amWriting is intended to be in a more “playwright” style, so I've been looking around for stuff more focused on #playwriting (for either theater or screen, I'm not picky at the moment.).

So I came across #FountainIO
https://fountain.io/ which is actually … pretty close to what I was thinking about.

Pro-tip to anyone who has to write a document: give #AsciiDoc / #AsciiDoctor a try.

Writing a course syllabus with the AsciiDoc markup language, I get these benefits:

* Can write one sentence per line, which helps me with structure and clarity.

* Trivial to indicate what is a heading and what is body text, which is critical for accessibility and for...

* Automatic table of contents and section numbering

* Easy to do basic formatting like italics, but also more complex stuff, like links to specific sections.

* Works well with version control / diffing software.

* Comments

* Can tell what's going on at a glance (e.g., you can tell where hyperlinked text goes just by looking at it)

Using AsciiDoc requires a little more up-front learning than just using Word or whatever, but it's so much simpler in the long run.

Markdown would probably also work, but I think AsciiDoc is the sweet spot between features and simplicity.

Since the input for this module is a standard #Asciidoc document, “weaving” isn't strictly necessary (a processor like #Asciidoctor can output a reasonable approximation of the final HTML without many issues), but we do some transformation to normalize code block titles and add cross reference hyperlinks where appropriate. These cross references now have a default styling that fits better with the default stylesheet used by Asciidoctor.
