Doch Doch

  4. Pimalaya gets another year of support, from 2026 to 2027, through the @NGIZero Commons Fund of the @nlnet foundation, part of the European Commission's Next Generation Internet initiative 🎉

  5. The semantic overlap between the browser's bookmarks, the "favorite articles" section of an #RSS reader and a read-it later manager triggers me

#pkm #clcpkm

  8. @itskamrankhan In a free/libre and extremely capable software called #orgmode whose limits are only bound by the limits of your imagination. (1)

Through #FOSS and (in contrast to #Markdown (3)) well designed and easily re-used clear text data format #orgdown (2, 5), I do have many possibilities to generate input for it and re-use output in other tools. Orgdown is recognized without any manual conversion in lots of tools (4).

Let me cite Dominik's tenth rule: Any sufficiently complicated #PIM or note-taking program contains an ad hoc, informally specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Org mode.

  10. Celebrate #Email Debt Forgiveness Day!
    emaildebtforgiveness.me/ 📧

"If there’s an email response you’ve wanted to send but been too anxious to send, you can send it on July 31st, without any apologies or explanations for all the time that has lapsed. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been. Just include a link to this explainer, the one you’re reading right now, so that your recipient knows what’s going on. Together, we can all make our inboxes less stressful."

  12. After a year of hard work and dedication, we are happy to announce the v2 release of Himalaya CLI:

    github.com/pimalaya/himalaya/r

For those who come from the v1, here the migration guide:

Special thanks to @nlnet and for their support during all this time.

  13. @janantos @thefish @akmur I've learned how to program but was never a professional coder myself.

However, I do fancy some #PIM tools I'd like to use. If there's nothing on the market, I code them myself in Python - the only language I'm at least confident with.

Some of my programs are enhanced by #LLM (test cases, new features to existing code, ...) and a few projects were #vibecoded from scratch to end. That's because I would not have invested my spare time and vibe-coded (but working) is better to me than not existing at all. I think I can judge the security implications for me during coding as well as for the users during execution time.

I do have a small Claude subscription and have access to good local models as well.

Those are my personal trade-offs for now.

I respect LLM resentments and I share them for the most part. However, it always depends on how you're using a tool.

  14. RE: tldr.nettime.org/@tante/116962

Well, after Microsoft took over #Github, I created all new repos on #Gitlab. Then I created my most recent #FOSS repositories on #Codeberg in order to support an European service with less chance of #enshittification.

Now that Codeberg bans any #LLM contributions, I have to find a new location or move back to Gitlab. 😞

Edit: It's particular sad because I think that anything they assume for LLM-code could also be done wrong by humans. Therefore, I would not differ between human code and non-human code as long as the result complies with the standards.

Any suggestions for an alternative that doesn't include the effort of self-hosting a git service myself? 🤔

  15. @jarango I'm on the Internet since 1994. (Same month the Netscape Navigator web browser hit the day of light, making the WWW a much better place to browse through.) So yes, I'm ancient.

I've been an avid information worker ever since.

And I never ever subscribed to any #mailinglist or #newsletter.

It would turn my #email process a miserable place to be.

Any organization doing some auto-signup is begging me to extend my killfile, making it impossible to reach me in future.

(#gmane was my dear friend though as I've very much loved the #usenet. And I still think people should re-adapt it as it solved many problems people are having these days.)

As I mentioned in the quoted post, I found fascinating Kevin Baker's characterization of Roam Research, Notion, Obsidian, and similar note-taking apps—based on concepts like "second brain", "zettelkasten", "networked note-taking", "PARA method", "Johnny Decimal", etc.—as "sandboxes for infinite varieties of avoidant labor". Your take complements Kevin Baker's.

  17. @skaphle @lproven I guess you do have a nerdy point of view as a #knowledgeworker and tech enthusiast.

Liam is not writing about us.

He's writing about the majority of people. People who don't enjoy adapting to tech in order to be fast, efficient and fix it exactly as wished. People who currently type URLs in their google search bar (default view of new tabs). People who have tons of "Unnamed (3).docx" directly on their desktop. People who think that a tool doesn't come with a clipboard functionality when they don't see Copy/Cut/Paste as familiar icons (or menu entries). People who collect lots of duplicates over time because they forgot that they've got that file already somewhere. People with rarely working information retrieval processes.

Tech people will, e.g., probably always prefer CLI over #GUI. You won't get any acceptance for that outside of IT departments.

And I also enjoyed #PalmOS much more than #Android. #DateBk3 was more advanced than almost anything #PIM nowadays.

  18. @totoroot I'm not at the computer. So I can only give you my own page where I list tools I'm using at the moment: karl-voit.at/apps-I-am-using/ (reminds me of checking its content again these days)

However, I do have lots of links in my PKM.
