The Silo and the Demolition Crew
Howard Stein taught me that the enemy of the Arts is the Humanities. He was defending a wall between two free rooms. China and the United States are now knocking down the building. Howard Stein used to stand at the front of a seminar room at Columbia's Oscar Hammerstein II Center and tell a room full of playwrights that the enemy of the Arts is the Humanities. He had earned the right to say it. Eleven years at the Yale School of Drama as associate dean and head of playwriting, seven years running the playwriting program at Iowa, ten years as the first permanent chairman of the Hammerstein Center, and a lifetime spent turning young writers into working dramatists. When a man like that tells you the Humanities are the enemy, you do not argue. You wait to understand. […]https://bolesblogs.com/2026/06/26/the-silo-and-the-demolition-crew/

Danville SanRamon: Guest Opinion: What we learned after producing play written by AI. “At the heart of most plays is conflict. A series of conflicts lead to a turning point, where the protagonist experiences a transformation and the story drives toward resolution. But the AI resisted. Despite repeated revisions, it shied away from allowing conflict between characters.”

Calling all #climate conscious #playwrights!
The Climate Playwriting Prize 2026 | Discover | Shakespeare's Globe
We believe that playwrights have a vital role to play in the conversation around the climate. Theatre is a space for animating audiences, forming communities, and experimenting with form; a space for processing the past, articulating the present, and imagining the future. Beyond the West End, regional and touring theatre is playing a vital role in engaging audiences.
This moment is marked by rising temperatures, escalating impacts of change on communities and ecosystems, but also by the unprecedented call to arms to storytellers at COP30 in 2025. The need for new stories that help audiences grapple with the realities and possibilities of this crisis has never been clearer.
In order to surface the breadth and diversity of new stories about this planetary moment, the Climate Playwriting Prize is an open invitation to playwrights to respond creatively to this subject matter. We are partnering with organisations all around the country to deliver workshops to writers, unlocking how they might want to tell their climate story.

I've been reading the plays and a biography of Bertolt Brecht. Such a fascinating man and story. This is a good documentary about his life in exile:

Problem: We love Markdown, but as a person with a unique use case (playwright), converting .md files into a usable format for sharing can be a hassle.
The solution? I created Playmaker to do it for you! 🎭✨ Check it out: https://codeberg.org/em_cinnamon/Playmaker

What’s your first book of the year? I’m reading the play August: Osage County by Tracy Letts. Loved the film with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and am planning to expand a short play of mine this year.

Working on my first full-length play. Added a new character, but she's not working out and I think I have to remove her. Now I'm changing the personality of one of the other characters to ramp things up. Rewrites take some of the fun out of being creative -- but it's also like working on a jigsaw puzzle, finding the right pieces to make the whole picture work.

Now that it's October, I'm going to shamelessly promote my minor collection of Halloween-adjacent plays.
"Colleen's Outer Demon" is a delightful tale of a woman, a headless demon and a suburban shopping mall. Are there puppets in this play? That's up to the producer.

ei hytte (the cabin), an a cappella musical
Book, Music and Lyrics by Eric Matthew Richardson
Directed by Noah WatkinsDuring an unseasonable blizzard, two strangers become trapped inside one of Norway's many off-grid public cabins. Without access to electricity, phone or internet service, the hikers wait out the storm. Veronica is a true crime author, and Colin is a warehouse worker. Neither are inclined to reveal too much about their personal lives beyond that. Pressured by the forces of the unseen Valkyries, the strangers push each other to their breaking points.

Publishing my older writing for the theater for anyone interested.

In the early 90s, a guy approached me because he knew I wrote plays. He wanted me to ghost write a musical about unwed teenage mothers. I tried. I seriously tried. But every song I wrote was more like something out of South Park than the serious, dignified tunes he had in mind. I had to give up the project. I was not the right person for the job. I wonder if he ever found anyone? #WritingCommunity #PlayWriting #Musicals

The Native Voices Anthology is now available for pre-order. It is coming out this summer. I’m one of 38 authors represented. My play “A Time For Dolls” will be included. It’s a coming of age story about a young Inuk and her mother.

Writing year in review:
No new sapphic books, but 2 plays written, 1 chosen for a reading, which may lead to a full staging. Overall, I consider it a successful writing year.
For next year:
Hoping to write 2 more plays, grow more as a playwright. Honestly don't know if I'll write another novel in 2024.

For historical reasons, I mostly use #Markdown for my writing, although I've started to use #AsciiDoc (through #AsciiDoctor) more and more these days.
One of the things I #amWriting is intended to be in a more “playwright” style, so I've been looking around for stuff more focused on #playwriting (for either theater or screen, I'm not picky at the moment.).
So I came across #FountainIO
https://fountain.io/ which is actually … pretty close to what I was thinking about. -
The first reading of my first play is coming up!

I vow as a playwright never to have a "shocking" ending that has little to do with the story that came before it

Ok, right, gotta breathe:
My play was chosen for a reading. Real, live people will be reading out loud the jumble of words that at least a few other people thought were good enough to invest time and resources into. Wild.
