Danville SanRamon: Guest Opinion: What we learned after producing play written by AI. “At the heart of most plays is conflict. A series of conflicts lead to a turning point, where the protagonist experiences a transformation and the story drives toward resolution. But the AI resisted. Despite repeated revisions, it shied away from allowing conflict between characters.”

Why did I write 28 short plays last month? In the hopes that one of them will get produced.

The Climate Playwriting Prize 2026 | Discover | Shakespeare's Globe
We believe that playwrights have a vital role to play in the conversation around the climate. Theatre is a space for animating audiences, forming communities, and experimenting with form; a space for processing the past, articulating the present, and imagining the future. Beyond the West End, regional and touring theatre is playing a vital role in engaging audiences.
This moment is marked by rising temperatures, escalating impacts of change on communities and ecosystems, but also by the unprecedented call to arms to storytellers at COP30 in 2025. The need for new stories that help audiences grapple with the realities and possibilities of this crisis has never been clearer.
In order to surface the breadth and diversity of new stories about this planetary moment, the Climate Playwriting Prize is an open invitation to playwrights to respond creatively to this subject matter. We are partnering with organisations all around the country to deliver workshops to writers, unlocking how they might want to tell their climate story.

Art is never finished, but deadlines still matter. in my blog, I write about how my full-length play "Banshee" goes through more changes before rehearsals start.
#theater #playwriting #revisions #WritingLife -
Finished that short play I started this week, REVOLUTION ON ICE. 25 pages. Three characters, one of them autistic.
This was not exactly the play I started out to write. I was going for a Bunuel kind of thing but it turned out more...traditional?
Still, I'm proud of how it turned out. Got to use Sonic the Hedgehog as a metaphor.
I think I'll try again to write what I intended. Maybe it will be easier since I got this one out of my system.

What’s your first book of the year? I’m reading the play August: Osage County by Tracy Letts. Loved the film with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and am planning to expand a short play of mine this year.

Working on my first full-length play. Added a new character, but she's not working out and I think I have to remove her. Now I'm changing the personality of one of the other characters to ramp things up. Rewrites take some of the fun out of being creative -- but it's also like working on a jigsaw puzzle, finding the right pieces to make the whole picture work.

Now that it's October, I'm going to shamelessly promote my minor collection of Halloween-adjacent plays.
"Colleen's Outer Demon" is a delightful tale of a woman, a headless demon and a suburban shopping mall. Are there puppets in this play? That's up to the producer.

ei hytte (the cabin), an a cappella musical
Book, Music and Lyrics by Eric Matthew Richardson
Directed by Noah WatkinsDuring an unseasonable blizzard, two strangers become trapped inside one of Norway's many off-grid public cabins. Without access to electricity, phone or internet service, the hikers wait out the storm. Veronica is a true crime author, and Colin is a warehouse worker. Neither are inclined to reveal too much about their personal lives beyond that. Pressured by the forces of the unseen Valkyries, the strangers push each other to their breaking points.

TFW you revise a 10-minute play to meet a submission opportunity's guidelines only to realize it's supposed to be a full-length play. And it's due tomorrow. 🤦
-
I enjoy NPX for what it is but it's not super conducive to musical theatre. And I'm not quite sure how to fix that, especially when it comes to works in development. Cold reading a musical is so much more difficult than reading a play.
Maybe there's a new format that can be explored. Hyperlinking demos might be a start. It would be nice to have some sort of built-in media player as well.

Ok, After the meeting I had today I've got two theatres interested in my play, but I won't find out if I've got my #ArtsCouncilEngland funding until next month. Nearly there!

For historical reasons, I mostly use #Markdown for my writing, although I've started to use #AsciiDoc (through #AsciiDoctor) more and more these days.
One of the things I #amWriting is intended to be in a more “playwright” style, so I've been looking around for stuff more focused on #playwriting (for either theater or screen, I'm not picky at the moment.).
So I came across #FountainIO
https://fountain.io/ which is actually … pretty close to what I was thinking about. -
