The Mind as Semi-Solid Smoke
This post continues the series on Socratic Thinking, turning the space-and-place lens inward to examine the mind itself. Human minds can be thought of as an imperfect place with the ability to create their own insta-places to navigate ambiguity.

Humans are biologically predisposed to seek out and use navigational markers. This tendency is rooted in our neural architecture, emerges early in life, and is shared with other animals, reflecting its deep evolutionary origins 1,2 . Even the simplest of life performing chemotaxis uses the signal-field of food to navigate.
When you’re microscopic, the territory is the map; at human scale, we externalise those cues as landmarks—then mirror the process inside our heads. Just as cells follow chemical gradients, our thoughts follow self-made landmarks, yet these landmarks are vaporous.
From the outside our mind is a single place, it is our identity. Probe closer and our identity is nebulous and dissolves the way a city dissolves into smaller and smaller places the closer you look. We use our identity to create the first stable place in the world and then use other places to navigate life. However, these places come from unreliable sources, our internal and external environments. How do we know the places are even real, and do we have the knowledge to trust their reality? Well, we don’t. We can’t judge our mental landmarks false. Callard calls this normative self-blindness: the built-in refusal to saw off the branch we stand on.
Normative self-blindness is a trick to gloss over details and keep moving. Insta-places are conjured from our experience and are treated as solid no matter how poorly they are tied down by actual knowledge. We can accept that a place was loosely formed in the past, an error, or is not yet well defined in the future, is unknown. However, in the moment, the places exist and we use them to see.
Understanding and accepting that our minds work this way is a key tenet of Socratic Thinking. It makes adopting the posture of inquiry much easier. Socratic inquiry begins by admitting that everyone’s guiding landmarks may be made of semi-solid smoke.

Offener Brief: AfD auf Verfassungswidrigkeit prüfen
Kurz vor dem Ende der Legislaturperiode fordern Menschen, die sich seit Jahren für Demokratie und gegen Rechtsextremismus engagieren, endlich ein Verbotsverfahren gegen die AfD anzustoßen.

Auf einer Demo gegen Rechtsextremismus fordern Teilnehmende ein Verbot der AfD.
(Quelle: picture alliance/dpa | Hannes P Albert)Angesichts der bevorstehenden Beratungen im Deutschen Bundestag in dieser Woche fordert ein breites Bündnis aus der ostdeutschen Zivilgesellschaft die demokratischen Abgeordneten des Bundestages auf, die Prüfung eines AfD-Verbotsverfahrens entschlossen voranzutreiben. Das Prüfverfahren sei ein klares Signal gegen die rechtsextreme Bedrohung, dazu fordern die Engagierten umfassendere Maßnahmen gegen Rassismus, Antisemitismus und Demokratiefeindlichkeit zu ergreifen.
Timo Reinfrank, Geschäftsführer der Amadeu Antonio Stiftung, unterstreicht die Dringlichkeit: „Die Debatte über ein Verbot der AfD zeigt, wie unklar und unentschlossen viele Demokrat*innen agieren. Für zivilgesellschaftlich Engagierte und Minderheiten wirkt diese Diskussion wie ein Feigenblatt, um sich nicht mit den für sie unmittelbar gefährlichen Erzählungen der AfD auseinanderzusetzen. Doch genau diese Erzählungen prägen längst die politische Realität. Wir dürfen nicht zulassen, dass diese rechtsextreme Partei weiter demokratische Institutionen aushöhlt und ein Klima der Angst schafft. Ein Prüfverfahren ist ein wichtiges Signal, doch ohne eine umfassende Strategie gegen rechtsextreme Hetze und Gewalt bleibt es Stückwerk.“
Einschüchterungen und Angriffe gegen demokratisch Engagierte
Die Unterzeichnenden berichten von gezielten Einschüchterungen und Angriffen durch die AfD, die nicht nur Minderheiten und Geflüchtete, sondern auch demokratisch Engagierte treffen, insbesondere in den ostdeutschen Bundesländern. Robert Kusche ehrenamtlicher VBRG-Vorstand betont: „Die AfD trägt aktiv zur Eskalation politischer Gewalt bei. Ihre Funktionär*innen beteiligen sich durch Rhetorik und Handlungen an der existenziellen Bedrohung ‚politischer Feinde‘ wie demokratisch Engagierten und Kommunalpolitiker*innen. Sie sendet Botschaften, die Gewalt gegen vulnerable Gruppen legitimieren. Für die Betroffenen bedeutet das eine ständige Bedrohung ihrer Sicherheit. Diese Entwicklung erfordert eine entschlossene Haltung aller Demokrat*innen, um die Werte einer offenen und sicheren Gesellschaft zu verteidigen.”
Kalkulierter Raubzug zum Abbau der Demokratie
Die zunehmende Vernetzung von AfD Mitgliedern mit Reichsbürger*innen und Rechtsextremen zum gewaltbereiten Angriff gegen Engagierte und Repräsentantinnen auf die Infrastruktur der Demokratie sind besorgniserregend und fordern zum Handeln auf, so Renate Sternatz, Vorsitzende von Mobit e.V. Thüringen. „Wir erleben vielerorts wiederholte Angriffe gegen die Menschenwürde auf Einzelpersonen und Gruppen, z. B. auf Menschen mit Migrationserfahrung, Journalist*innen, Gewerkschafter*innen und viele weitere demokratisch Engagierte. Die systematische Verunsicherung erfolgt in den Kommunen, in Vereinen, im Alltag, in den sozialen Netzwerken und auf der Straße. Die AfD zielt programmatisch auf die Abschaffung der freiheitlich demokratischen Grundordnung und sie missbraucht ihre parlamentarischen Mandate zur gezielten Einschüchterung der Zivilgesellschaft. In Thüringen hat die AfD zuletzt durch die Eröffnung des Landtagsparlaments ihre gefährliche Präsenz und symbolische Macht unter Beweis gestellt. Der kalkulierte Raubzug zum Abbau unserer demokratischen Prinzipien darf nicht länger toleriert werden.“
Verbotsverfahren darf nicht verschleppt werden
Die Engagierten fordern die Bundesregierung und die demokratischen Abgeordneten des Bundestages auf, ein klares Signal gegen die rechtsextreme Bedrohung zu setzen und die Prüfung eines Verbotsverfahrens aktiv auf die Tagesordnung zu bringen und nicht bis nach der Bundestagswahl zu verschleppen. Gleichzeitig sei es unerlässlich, umfassendere Strategien zu entwickeln, um die Demokratie gegen Angriffe von rechts zu schützen.
„Nie wieder ist jetzt“ – mit diesen Worten schließen die Verfasser*innen des Briefes und fordern von den Abgeordneten des Bundestages eine entschlossene Haltung und klare Maßnahmen gegen die AfD und die von ihr ausgehenden Gefahren.

Sehr geehrte Abgeordnete des Deutschen Bundestags,
wir wenden uns an Sie als Vertreter*innen zahlreicher zivilgesellschaftlicher Initiativen, Organisationen und Gruppen aus Ostdeutschland, die sich tagtäglich für eine demokratische, weltoffene und pluralistische Gesellschaft einsetzen. Mit großer Sorge beobachten wir, wie die AfD ihre Position in kommunalen Gremien und Parlamenten missbraucht, um nicht nur jene zu attackieren, die vor Ort für das Gemeinwohl und den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt eintreten, sondern auch die Grundwerte unseres Grundgesetzes. Sie fördert ein Klima der Angst und Spaltung und nutzt unsere Demokratie, um systematisch demokratische Prinzipien zu untergraben.
Wir erleben hautnah, wie die AfD gezielt gegen Minderheiten, Andersdenkende und demokratische Institutionen vorgeht. Ihre Hetze vergiftet nicht nur das gesellschaftliche Klima, sondern fällt auf fruchtbaren Boden und erzeugt reale Gewalt. Besonders betroffen sind hiervon viele Regionen in den ostdeutschen Bundesländern, in denen die AfD besonders stark ist und zugleich anderen rechtsextremen und neonazistischen Kräften Auftrieb verschafft. Der Hass und die Gewalt treffen die Schwächsten, Minderheiten, Geflüchtete, Frauen, aber auch Engagierte der demokratischen Zivilgesellschaft und in der Kommunalpolitik.
Neben der Verbreitung von offenem Antisemitismus, völkischem Rassismus und wahnhaften Verschwörungserzählungen richtet die AfD gezielte Angriffe auf die Erinnerungskultur an die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus. Führende Mitglieder der Partei sprechen von einem „Schuldkult“ und relativieren damit bewusst die größten Menschheitsverbrechen unserer Geschichte.
Wir, die Unterzeichnenden, wollen diese Entwicklungen nicht hinnehmen. Wir stellen uns daher täglich Antisemitismus, Rassismus und Geschichtsrevisionismus entgegen. In Sachsen, Thüringen und Sachsen-Anhalt wird die AfD bereits jetzt als gesichert rechtsextrem eingestuft. Sie hat sich von einer rechtspopulistischen Oppositionspartei zu einer system- und demokratiefeindlichen Kraft entwickelt, die gezielt das Vertrauen in Parlamente, Gerichte, Medien und zivilgesellschaftliche Strukturen untergräbt und diese offen angreift.
Tagtäglich erfahren wir, was es bedeutet, durch Rechtsextreme, Rassisten und Antisemiten beleidigt und bedroht zu werden. Daher fordern wir Sie auf, Ihren Beitrag im Kampf gegen Rechtsextremismus zu leisten: Leiten Sie ein Prüfverfahren vor dem Bundesverfassungsgericht ein, um unabhängig festzustellen, ob die AfD auf dem Boden des Grundgesetzes steht. Lassen Sie uns gemeinsam entschlossen dafür eintreten, die demokratischen Werte unseres Landes zu schützen. Mehr denn je gilt: „Nie wieder ist jetzt.“ Unsere Verfassung gibt uns dieses Mittel zum Schutz der Demokratie an die Hand; wir sollten es nutzen.
Seit langem dokumentieren wir unsere Erfahrungen und Einschätzungen, um ein umfassendes Bild der Situation zu vermitteln. Wir laden Sie ein, mit uns zu diskutieren und gemeinsam Lösungen zu erarbeiten. Drücken Sie sich nicht aus parteitaktischen Gründen vor Ihrer Verantwortung gegenüber der Demokratie und den Menschen – insbesondere in den ostdeutschen Bundesländern.
Ja, ein mögliches Verbot der AfD wird das Problem mit Rassismus, Antisemitismus und Rechtsextremismus nicht lösen. Doch ein Prüf- und Verbotsverfahren wäre ein wichtiges Signal und ein Baustein, um auf die Bedeutung der AfD und die von ihr ausgehenden Gefahren zu reagieren. Es ist ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Wir sind offen für weitere Ideen und Vorschläge.

Wer sich für Content-Strategie und User Experience-Design interessiert, kann sich darüber am Donnerstagnachmittag im Wahrnehmungslabor der FH Joanneum unterhalten. Das Web Literacy Lab organisiert das Meeting zusammen mit den Design-Studiengängen der FH im Rahmen des Designmonat Graz. Wir haben Christian Henner-Fehr und Judith Denkmayr aus Wien eingeladen und hoffen auf Input aus der Praxis zum Thema Webinhalte. Konrad Baumann und seine Studenten werden über ihre Forschungen zur (katastrophalen) Usability der Websites großer österreichischer Firmen beerichten. Brigitte Radl und ich werden kurz präsentieren, was Content-Strategie ist und warum wir uns beim WLL darauf konzentrieren.

Bill McKibben has a new book coming out on the 19th of August, 2025, called Here Comes the Sun: A Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization
It tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind―and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay. From the everyday citizens who installed solar panels equal to a third of Pakistan’s electric grid, in a year, to the world’s sixth-largest economy―California―nearly halving its use of natural gas in the last two years, Bill McKibben traces the arrival of plentiful, inexpensive solar energy. And he shows how solar power is more than just a path out of the climate crisis: it is a chance to reorder the world on saner and more humane grounds.

TikTok videos set to Punjabi music, showing electricians unboxing inverters and comparing Chinese panel brands.
The Pakistan example is particularly significant because the sale of Chinese solar panels is cannibalizing demand from the very coal plants China financed in that nation just a few years ago, as part of its New Silk Road, making it a litmus test for China’s global climate leadership. By treating Pakistan as a proving ground for managing stranded fossil assets while scaling renewable ecosystems, China has the opportunity to develop and validate transition models that could be exported across the Global South.”“The current predictions for Solar are that by 2026, solar will generate more electricity than all the world’s nuclear plants combined. By 2029, it will generate more than all the hydro dams. By 2031, it will have outstripped gas and, by 2032, coal. According to the I.E.A., solar is likely to become the world’s primary source of all energy, not just electricity, by 2035.”
“According to a 2023 report from the Energy Transitions Commission, all the materials needed to reach net zero by 2050 will be less than the amount of coal consumed in a year. Lithium, once mined, does its job for decades; coal just gets burned, which means you have to mine more. And, when batteries or solar panels degrade, the minerals in them remain valuable enough that they will almost certainly be recycled—large-scale recycling operations are appearing around the world. A report from the Rocky Mountain Institute predicted that by 2050 we will have done all the mining we’ll need to do for battery minerals; after that, we’ll just recycle them, over and over again.”

And surveys conducted by the communications and research firm Global Strategy Group in the fall of 2024 found that eighty-seven per cent of Americans—and almost eighty per cent of people planning to vote for Trump—favored the clean-energy tax credits in the I.R.A. “Solar power remains the most popular source of electricity in America,” Global Strategy Group partner Andrew Baumann said, “with broad support across the political spectrum. If we can make the transition affordable and easy, the will is there.“

Atamansha. Das Leben von Marusya Nikiforova
Die ukrainische Anarchistin Maria #Nikiforova (1885 - 16. September 1919) wird manchmal mit Jeanne d'Arc verglichen. Wie diese stammte sie aus bescheidenen Verhältnissen und wurde auf unwahrscheinliche Weise zu einer grausamen Militärführerin, die von ihren eingeschworenen Feinden gefangen genommen und hingerichtet wurde. Und wie Jeanne war sie eine Fanatikerin, die ihre Ziele auf gewalttätige und rücksichtslose Weise verfolgte.
Aber es gibt keinen Kult um Maria Nikiforova. Es gibt keine Bücherregale in irgendeiner Sprache, die ihrem Leben gewidmet sind. Obwohl sie in den russischen Revolutionen von 1917 und dem anschließenden #Bürgerkrieg eine herausragende Rolle spielte, wurde sie aus der sowjetischen Geschichtsschreibung dieser Zeit praktisch getilgt. In einem in der Sowjetunion veröffentlichten biografischen Wörterbuch der Russischen Revolution, das Hunderte von Namen enthält, wird sie nicht erwähnt, sondern nur ein paar Dutzend Frauen. Es gibt Einträge zu den bolschewistischen Heldinnen Alexandra Kollontai, Larissa Reissner und Inessa Armand, aber keine dieser Frauen hatte ein unabhängiges militärisches Kommando wie Nikiforowa.
Es gibt keine wissenschaftliche Biografie über Maria Nikiforowa, keine Geschichtsschreibung über ihr Leben, die nur aktualisiert und möglicherweise neu interpretiert werden müsste. Das liegt zum Teil daran, dass sie die meiste Zeit ihres Lebens im Untergrund verbrachte: Sie schloss sich mit 16 Jahren einer anarchistischen Terrorgruppe an und war eigentlich nur zwei Jahre lang (1917-1919) "über der Erde". Daher gibt es nur sehr wenige Dokumente, die ihre Aktivitäten belegen, und fast keine Fotos. Für einen Terroristen kann es tödlich sein, erkannt zu werden, und so war es auch für Nikiforova am Ende. Die Berichte über ihr Leben, die es gibt, finden sich in der Regel in der Memoirenliteratur oder in der Belletristik. Die meisten dieser Berichte sind feindselig gegenüber Nikiforova und stellen sie als abstoßend und böse dar.
Nikiforowa war Ukrainerin und ihre Aktivitäten in der Russischen Revolution und im Bürgerkrieg fanden größtenteils in der Ukraine statt, aber sie wurde von ukrainischen Historikern weitgehend ignoriert. Sie war antinationalistisch und konnte, wie die ukrainische anarchistische Bewegung im Allgemeinen, nicht in eine nationalistische Geschichtsperspektive eingeordnet werden.
Selbst Autoren, die mit dem Anarchismus sympathisieren, haben sie in der Regel vernachlässigt. Obwohl sie eng mit dem berühmten Bauernanarchisten Nestor Makhno verbunden war, wird sie in Büchern über Makhno kaum erwähnt. Dabei war Nikiforowa 1918 bereits als anarchistische Atamansha (militärische Anführerin) in der ganzen Ukraine berühmt, während Makhno noch eine eher obskure Figur war, die in einem provinziellen Hinterland agierte. In den Werken von Peter #Arshinov, #Volin und Paul A#vrich kommt sie nicht vor. Alexandre #Skirdas Buch "Nestor Makhno, le cosaque libertaire" erwähnt sie zwar, widmet ihr aber nur einen Absatz in einem Werk von 400 Seiten. Ausnahmen von der Regel sind Makhno selbst und sein ehemaliger Adjutant Victor Belash. In seinen Memoiren (die nur 22 Monate der Revolution und des Bürgerkriegs umfassen) berichtet Makhno als Augenzeuge von einer Reihe dramatischer Ereignisse, bei denen Nikiforova eine führende Rolle spielte. #Belash, dessen Arbeit aus den Akten der sowjetischen Geheimpolizei gerettet wurde, präsentiert ebenfalls Primärquellenmaterial über sie.
Seit dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion besteht in Russland und der Ukraine ein großes Interesse daran, die "weißen Flecken" in ihrer Geschichte zu füllen. Makhno und Nikiforova haben von diesem Interesse profitiert: Es wurden viele Bücher über #Makhno und einige Aufsätze über Nikiforova veröffentlicht. Die Archive haben einige solide Informationen geliefert; so gibt es zum Beispiel Nikiforowas Dienstakte, da sie einst Mitglied der Roten Armee war. Allmählich zeichnet sich ein klareres Bild ihres Lebens ab, und es ist möglich, eine einigermaßen zuverlässige Erzählung zu erstellen, auch wenn viele Unklarheiten bestehen bleiben.
Die folgende Skizze von Nikiforovas Leben basiert hauptsächlich auf Sekundärquellen, die in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten auf Russisch und Ukrainisch veröffentlicht wurden.

No Sex Needed: All-Female #Lizard Species Cross Their Chromosomes to Make Babies
These southwestern lizards' asexual reproduction is no longer a secret

February 21, 2010"Since the 1960s scientists have known that some species of #WhiptailLizards need a male even less than a fish needs a bicycle. These all-lady lizard species (of the Aspidoscelis genus) from Mexico and the U.S. Southwest manage to produce well-bred offspring without the aid of male fertilization.
"But how do they—and the other 70 species of vertebrates that propagate this way—do it without the genetic monotony and disease vulnerability that often results from asexual reproduction? 'It has remained unclear' and 'has been the topic of much speculation,' report a team of researchers who aimed to answer just that question. Their results were published online February 21 in the journal Nature. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)
"These lizards and other '#parthenogenetic species are genetically isolated,' explains Peter Baumann, an associate investigator at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, Mo., and co-author of the study. Species as diverse as #KomodoDragons and #HammerheadSharks do it asexually if necessary, but some species, like these little lizards, don't have a choice. 'They can't exchange genetic material, and this loss of genetic exchange is a major disadvantage to them in a changing environment,' he says. Unless an animal can recombine the DNA they already have, they will produce an offspring with an identical set of chromosomes, in which any genetic weakness, such as disease susceptibility or physical mutation, would have no chance to be overridden by outside genetic material from a mate.
"The new research by Baumann and his team reveal that these lizards maintain genetic richness by starting the reproductive process with twice the number of chromosomes as their sexually reproducing cousins. These celibate species resulted from the hybridization of different sexual species, a process that instills the parthenogenetic lizards with a great amount of #GeneticDiversity at the outset. And the researchers found that these species could maintain the diversity by never pairing their homologous chromosomes (as sexual species do by taking one set of chromosomes from each parent) but rather by combining their sister chromosomes instead. '#Recombination between pairs of sister chromosomes maintains heterozygosity' throughout the chromosome, noted the authors of the study, which was led by Aracely Lutes, a postdoctoral researcher in Baumann's lab.
"This discovery, which had until now been unconfirmed in the reptile world, means that 'these lizards have a way of distinguishing sister from homologous chromosomes,' Baumann says. How do they do it? That's something the group is now investigating.
"Another big unknown is precisely how the lizards end up with double the amount of chromosomes in the first place. Baumann suspects that it could happen over two rounds of replication or if two sex cells combine forces before the division process starts."
