    These accounting practices played a decisive role in the birth of capitalism and its evolution. ‘Standardised accounting made it possible to separate ownership from management, a separation that was still rare in British and European companies more than a century later,’ the authors point out.

    Accounting also made it possible to strengthen control over the workforce and intensify its labour. The plantation system confirmed Marx's observation a century later: increased productivity goes hand in hand with deteriorating working conditions. ‘Working conditions worsen as management and technology improve,’ the book notes. Gradually, the plantations of the British West Indies in the 18th century came to resemble the large factories of the following century, with the added violence of the slave system, where those who resisted were whipped, beaten and hanged.

  9. CW: Animal industry working conditions

    A reminder that the meat industry relies on nightmarish lives for the animals killed but also relies on destroying the human workers working in it.
    I think as vegans, antispeciesists we should support the workers in the industry. For several reasons :
    - better working conditoins implies higher production costs and lower profit rates.
    - workers, through strikes, unionizing, can gain power over the industry. It is clear people work these jobs out of necessity. They are some of the most impacted humans by the exploitation of other animals. They have a direct interest in better work conditions and even in changing what they do for a living. Meat industry workers are potential allies.
    - We should be aware that producing plants based foods also exploits many people often with terrible work conditions.

    I cannot figure out what about this that is new.
    #teachers already have such bad #workconditions and long hours, working late into the night to prepare lessons for groups always growing in number, trying to sort any problems without help as any such is long gone due to lack of resources. Even less time to reflect, discuss and improve. The same goes for #schoolleaders in times of cuts and minimized budgets.

    I agree with @dylanwiliam - first find what to stop doing
