It did feel a bit ‘promotional’ - as you say. I thought this ⬇️ was the guts of it & should have - could have - led:

“Despite positioning itself as the party looking out for ordinary Australians, One Nation has been opposed to raising wages for Australia’s lowest paid workers. As the Fair Work Commission awarded a 4.75 per cent pay increase to minimum wage earners this month, Hanson said she was opposed to the change. Over the years, Hanson has consistently voted against improvements to workers’ conditions from penalty rates, job security, to criminalising wage theft.”

A pretty telling list there ⬆️
Thanks for sharing this Heather - interesting to see & think thru ON’s record. 🙏🏻

  6. Meta reassigned 7,000 employees into its three-month-old Applied AI unit and drafted engineers to generate training data. Many describe the work as soul-crushing. With $125-145B in annual capital spending on AI infrastructure at stake, the company is learning that motion and consumption metrics don't measure real progress. implicator.ai/zuckerberg-admit #AI #WorkingConditions #Technology

  12. CW: Accounting is a control weapon 🧶

These accounting practices played a decisive role in the birth of capitalism and its evolution. ‘Standardised accounting made it possible to separate ownership from management, a separation that was still rare in British and European companies more than a century later,’ the authors point out.

Accounting also made it possible to strengthen control over the workforce and intensify its labour. The plantation system confirmed Marx's observation a century later: increased productivity goes hand in hand with deteriorating working conditions. ‘Working conditions worsen as management and technology improve,’ the book notes. Gradually, the plantations of the British West Indies in the 18th century came to resemble the large factories of the following century, with the added violence of the slave system, where those who resisted were whipped, beaten and hanged.

  14. Fact-checking claims that France's working conditions are among worst in Europe.

French economist Jean-Claude Delgènes recently slammed the country's working conditions claiming that France has "completely fallen behind in terms of working conditions".

  15. Tea drinkers take note: the ethical labelling is not doing its job - tea pickers are living below the poverty line and without adequate access to drinking water, toilets and healthy living conditions. A big issue is the brands are not paying enough for the tea leaves they buy:

“Consumers are not demanding cheap teas. It’s traded down by the brands,” he said. “So how do you move out of the vicious cycle? It’s up to the brands to make that first move.”

  16. The Failed Promise of Electric Cars

    youtube.com/watch?v=0_DJ1UKjk-

Federal funding for electric vehicle manufacturing was supposed to create thousands of good-paying, union jobs. But workers at Ultium Cells, which makes electric batteries for GM, reveal a different story. They make just $16.50/hour. One worker told us he's afraid he'll come home in a body bag.

Ultium received $2.5 billion from the government for their electric battery project.

One Ultium worker told us, "They need to stop giving taxpayer dollars to companies that essentially treat their workers like gum on the bottom of a boot.”

  17. CW: capitalism wondering

    @Mycroft
Yes, a #UBI would be a step in the right direction.

The race to the bottom needs to stop, kids are increasingly growing up with #mentalProblems and #developmentalProblems because they are basically forced to eat garbage and/or live in #apartments with little access to #useable #greenSpace.

The #CEOclass use tricks to encourage #workers to accept worse and worse #workingConditions over time. A UBI reduces the amount of abuse the #sociopath can inflict.
