  1. #podcast Dive into a powerful conversation with the political scientist, historian, curator and anti-racist decolonial feminist Françoise Vergès as she unpacks the social and environmental politics of cleaning, waste and vital needs, questioning how water, air, food, housing, medicine and hygiene are constructed through systems of racial capitalism and coloniality.

  3. CW: Accounting is a control weapon 🧶

These accounting practices played a decisive role in the birth of capitalism and its evolution. ‘Standardised accounting made it possible to separate ownership from management, a separation that was still rare in British and European companies more than a century later,’ the authors point out.

Accounting also made it possible to strengthen control over the workforce and intensify its labour. The plantation system confirmed Marx's observation a century later: increased productivity goes hand in hand with deteriorating working conditions. ‘Working conditions worsen as management and technology improve,’ the book notes. Gradually, the plantations of the British West Indies in the 18th century came to resemble the large factories of the following century, with the added violence of the slave system, where those who resisted were whipped, beaten and hanged.

  4. Tea drinkers take note: the ethical labelling is not doing its job - tea pickers are living below the poverty line and without adequate access to drinking water, toilets and healthy living conditions. A big issue is the brands are not paying enough for the tea leaves they buy:

“Consumers are not demanding cheap teas. It’s traded down by the brands,” he said. “So how do you move out of the vicious cycle? It’s up to the brands to make that first move.”

In the wake of the Mr. Beast controversy about harsh working conditions, a whistleblower came forth with revelations that the YouTube creator called Your Autistic Life has created a toxic work environment for his worker. He explains, “My boss keeps pushing me to work work work all the time. It is insane. He also makes homophobic statements.”

We reached to Your Autistic Life for comments. Here is what he had to say, “I have only one employee working on my videos. So I know who this whistleblower is. It is true that I push myself to work like a madman, but what else can I do when I’m my only employee. Also, those accusations of homophobia are categorically false, however. I’m queer myself!”

Your Autistic Life is considering all options, including suing himself for workplace violations, and countersuing for defamation. We’ll keep you posted with the details as they emerge.

  7. I recall when Sears was arguably the largest retailer, and hearing that it paid its workers well.

Now the largest retailer is #Amazon , and I hear that the horrors of working for it include having to live in your own camper near sorting centers and while on the job having to piss into bottles because they're denied restroom breaks.

I don't recall who the CEO of Sears was, but I do know about Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, his yaugt, and his SoCal mansion that was once owned by movie mogul Jack Warner.

  9. The Failed Promise of Electric Cars

    youtube.com/watch?v=0_DJ1UKjk-

Federal funding for electric vehicle manufacturing was supposed to create thousands of good-paying, union jobs. But workers at Ultium Cells, which makes electric batteries for GM, reveal a different story. They make just $16.50/hour. One worker told us he's afraid he'll come home in a body bag.

Ultium received $2.5 billion from the government for their electric battery project.

One Ultium worker told us, "They need to stop giving taxpayer dollars to companies that essentially treat their workers like gum on the bottom of a boot.”
