Packed up my T430, moved it to new house, installed.
The iDRAC now cannot display power data. It can display the air & CPU temps (21 & 49 C).
No config changes, no updates (no license), but mysteriously no data.
Could I have shaken loose an actual physical connection in the truck?

So I thought about buying a Thinkpad T430 with minimum RAM and hard drive and swap them with components from my old machine. I really like T430.
One thing I am worried is the plastic degradation (it came out in 2012, after all). I had been trying to be careful with my T430 and keep it away from sun when possible, but if I buy a new one (to me, still originally from 2012), I don't know how well it was preserved.
I really like T430, but the way how you (dis)assemble it means hoping the plastic thingies (hinges, I guess) don't break as you have to use some force.
What are other people's experiences? Does it break easily nowadays? Do you find they are in bad condition when bought online?

I have replaced the noisy Toshiba fan+heatsink from my #Lenovo #Thinkpad #T430 with the quieter Delta #fan and #heatsink from the dead Thinkpad T430 that serves as organ donor for the one I use.
The fan noise was getting me crazy. It was unbearably loud. See this video for comparison:

Checking #VW #GolfGTI with #VCDS to measure #camshaft adaptation phase position on intake and exhaust (this can warn you if the timing chain is stretching).
Position (with a warmed engine on slower idle) is <5,0 degrees so all is OK here (the chain should be good to about 93205 miles / 150 000 km, particularly with more frequent oil changes)
The mechanics stool / creeper from #LIDL is worth getting if you see it in the middle shelf (I use it so I can put the #Thinkpad #T430 on the drivers seat to reach the #OBD2 connector and sit on the stool with the drivers door open to monitor whatever is on the screen (ofc this only works for tasks where the car is stationary, but if you want to do on the move diagnostics/datalogging you need 2 people anyway for safety)

I brought the #Lenovo #Thinkpad #T430 (that I used before I got the P50 on the right hand side of the photo with the #Filofax and pen case on top) back to the office reformatted it and installed Win11 with Rufus and created a more "minimal" user profile (with fewer directories downloaded from Onedrive and Dropbox) for myself to use with #VCDS (the P50 is bulky when working on the car with limited room inside, it does not sit well on the front seat and is awkward to use, and VCDS doesn't need a particularly large screen.
I will add another user profile so the T430 can also be used as a standby machine in my office (such as when new staff do online training courses)

Replaced a keyboard in this #T430 (now my backup laptop) - with a working one extracted from the remains of another T430 with a defective mobo I keep for spares..

Hneď som ho vyskúšal a konečne vytiahnem z môjho #ThinkPad #T430 plné rozlíšenie môjho QHD monitoru (2560x1440). Predtým som mal FullHD monitor, a na ten mi stačil predchádzajúci adaptér z Mini DisplayPort na HDMI. Lenže ten na nový QHD monitor už ponúkal príliš malý bandwidth a dovolil mi zobraziť len FullHD rozlíšenie.

TIL how simple it is to setup #ThinkPad #UEFI #dualboot (providing one OS is #Windows)
- Install Windows, leaving space free
- Install #osOfChoice (#NetBSD in my case) into free space
- Copy preferred bootx64.efi into /EFI/Boot
- Set ThinkPad BIOS to boot from the drive, *not* "Windows Boot Manager"Default boot is now osOfChoice
To boot Windows, press F12 and just select "Windows Boot Manager"
Had been using #refind (which is still great for more complex cases)

@libreleah Hi Leah, the #T430 got back fine. It is now super cool and quiet, the big ssd is in and #debian #linux works smoothly. The intel wifi card with ac is great and all-in-all the old bird has really got a new lease of life. Thank you! best regards, Mark

My current laptop is a Lenovo #t430, running #Devuan / #fluxbox. Latest laptop in a string of #ThinkPad: #t420s, #x300, #t61p.
For me, the X300/X301 was the pinnacle in terms of size, screen ratio, resolution, weight, durability. The low voltage processor just couldn't keep up with the modern world. Post #IBM, seems every Thinkpad is another run on a downward pointing ladder.
Not sure what I will do when this one dies. Man I wish the #Retro / 25th ann. didn't suck.

He andado corre y corre este #ViernesDeEscritorio. La oportunidad de compartir mi #EscritorioGNULinux me toma lejos de mi laptop habitual, así que me conecté desde mi #BisonGT #Adroid a mi servidor casero (una #ThinkPad #T430) y es lo que muestro aquí 🙌
