I talked to @libreleah on the #minifree IRC and it turns out there isn't actually any HDMI audio through the miniDP++, according to the schematics there is no physical connection. So I can stop looking for a software solution.
But there's a way out! I'll find a dock for it. That will have working audio, I presume through a native HDMI connector.

@beefbaby182 I'm running this one on a fairly recent Gateway laptop (neofetch attached), I have had no driver problems except for the fingerprint reader which isn't detected
On my Nvidia PC, I had some issues with Nouveau so I used the official Nvidia drivers but I haven't had any issues
The next PC I'm going to buy is a #minifree laptop

#Minifree is a casualty of the #COVID19 pandemic and #LeahRowe needs financial help to dig herself out of the hole it's left her in. Anyone need to employ an experienced software and hardware hacker who ran her own business for long enough to really value having managers doing it for her, so she can focus on the stuff she's good at?
