I wonder why YouTube recommended me a 1989 episode of #BBC #Crimewatch - turns out there was a 1982 #GolfGTI used as a getaway vehicle in one of the segments (multiple armed #robberies on train stations in South #London)

There was a lot more #crime then compared to today, much of it seemed to be fuelled by rampant inequality (as well as #cars being way less secure than today, and a lot more #cash being handled by businesses)

in 2025 someone in same part of London had their Mk1 Golf (just normal model, but now a #ClassicCar) nicked, but it was all over Facebook and multiple folk saw it and called #Metpol - thieves soon got nicked and he got his car back..

Also put #RacingLine #Stage1 #remap from #MiltonKeynes #UK & #DQ250 #DSG tune on #GolfGTI at end of May

Had false start as first PDM (OBD2 dongle) was goosed, but RL were responsive, sent new one next day (could even speak to real humans on telephone to sort things out!)

Used smol laptop on passenger seat (propped up on box + multiple Cecilia Aherne novels borrowed from book swap in office next door) to apply maps with Ring smartcharger set for constant 13,8V supply to keep battery charged.

Was a bit nerve wracking as you get whole list of gnarly errors on the dashboard but they clear off afterwards.

Did get DSG error codes initially but again Racingline sent new DSG map next day, applied this and so far so good (car now has similar power level to entry level GolfR ) #cars #tuning

Had #MOT (compulsory #vehicle inspection) for #GolfGTI this week (first one since I got it last year)

Took slightly longer than my previous #cars - there are twin exhausts and both must be tested!

Passed with 0 advisories and very good emissions test - only 18ppm of #hydrocarbons which is very good as it means #petrol is being used as much as possible to power the engine rather than going out of exhaust unburned - just as well with price of the stuff at the moment (as well as #environment impact!)

I fitted new #sparkplugs last November, replaced the air filter and did oil service which looks like it has paid off - am going for 6 month oil changes as widely recommended for #EA888 engine ( helps keep timing chain in good condition longer)

Discovered its better to leave coilpack bolts slightly loose when reconnecting their plugs due to tight harness.

Might be placebo, but car feels like it runs better after replacing #sparkplugs

Decided to take a few engine bay #photos of the #EA888 with #LumixG100D after washing my hands, so got a few bonus shots of high pressure #petrol pump and MPI (multi point #injection) extra fuel rail (there are port injectors below it which should hopefully reduce carbon buildup) - USA variants of this #engine don't get this and its been deleted from later engines (2019 onwards?) that have #GPF (gasoline/petrol particulate filter) due to WLTP requirements

Also added red aluminium #DSG paddle shifters (replacing the stubby ones that #VW supply as stock), and selector knob with red #GTI pattern stripes. Got a thinner set of needle nose #pliers with serrated edges to yoink out plastic pins in steering wheel that hold the shifters - all the others I had were too wide by about 2mm.

Had to fork out £13 Earth Pounds to Admiral (about £5 was admin fee) to declare these for #insurance purposes - insurers do check for #mods like these, their staff monitor social media as do more observant Police officers from the Roads Policing Unit should they pull you over!

(I sometimes have to use car parks that is popular with "boy racer" types and the old bill keep an eye on these)

Got a #DSG oil change done this week (it wasn't clear if the #GolfGTI had ever had this done, I only had partial service history).

My usual mechanic didn't have the kit to do it, but a work colleague knew a lad (her grand daughters partner) who could - he turned up in this modified MK5 GTI (also DSG6) to collect my car and take it to his workshop (just up the road from where I work), so I knew he would do a good job 😁

Apparently its tuned to about 480PS (certainly sounded like it)

There has been 33 years between me getting the #Filofax and the #GolfGTI to go with it 😁

I am going to start using that Filofax again that I bought in 1992, and has been with me all these years, fed up with flaky Outlook, my personal email isn't on MS365 so I don't get the calendar anyway, I don't like using a mobile phone to take notes but don't always want to haul out one of my laptops..

New whip, who dis? 2018 #VW #GolfGTI - Typ 5G Mk 7,5 facelift - 2,0L, 230PS, 6 speed #DSG 'box in Tornado Red (nice solid colour) ordered last Monday, delivered Wednesday from London - got it a day early as I said to lads "don't bother valeting it, will do that myself" (they are into #detailing themselves)

Spent most of the weekend tidying up exterior (interior still needs more work) and getting used to extra power compared to previous car (I have that standalone #TomTom on the dash not even as much for navigation but as warning not to exceed speed limits, is easy to do (and expensive here)

Always wanted one since my youth but couldn't afford it then and didn't have licence anyway (sorry Greta, although I did at least go 30 years without driving)
