Nicole Atkins New album ‘Drama’, her first in 6 years, out September 18 via Sun Records
NICOLE ATKINS
ACCLAIMED SINGER-SONGWRITER ANNOUNCES ‘DRAMA’, HER FIRST ALL-NEW FULL-LENGTH RELEASE IN OVER SIX YEARS
FIRST SINGLE ‘WHEN THE NIGHT FALLS’ OUT NOW
NEW LP PRODUCED BY WILCO’S PAT SANSONE WITH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM LONGTIME FRIEND CHRIS ISAAK, DR. DOG’S ERIC SLICK, AND MORE
‘DRAMA’ ARRIVES FRIDAY 18 SEPTEMBER VIA SUN RECORDS / WICKED GAME RECORDS
PRE-ORDER/PRE-SAVE AVAILABLE NOW
Nicole Atkins is proud to announce her long-awaited new album ‘Drama‘, arriving via Sun Records / Wicked Game Records on Friday, 18th September. The acclaimed singer-songwriter’s seventh studio album and first all-new full-length release in over six years, ‘Drama’ is heralded by the first single, ‘When the Night Falls’, available everywhere now.
“I got together with my old friend Emery Dobyns to write a song together,” said Nicole Atkins. “We had these chords, and the feeling from the music reminded me of something I would’ve written for my first album, Neptune City, and I thought about where I was back then. The toxic love affair. And tying it into who and where I am now, and being able to write a song about terrible love from a place of power. Some would call it growth. I’m just still in love with the ‘sound’ of heartache. It gets me like no other.”

Largely recorded live over four productive days in her current home base of Nashville, TN, with GRAMMY® Award-nominated musician/producer Pat Sansone (Wilco, The Autumn Defense, Robyn Hitchcock), ‘Drama’ sees Atkins exploring the isolation, separation, and loneliness of a long-distance marriage through her signature fusion of musical genres and intimate lyrical songcraft. The album came together at the behest of her close friend and touring partner Chris Isaak, who signed her to Sun Records as part of his strategic alliance with the historic label as both artist and curator of new projects with his new imprint, Wicked Game Records. Drama spans style and era with smart design and an irrepressible buoyancy, from the girl group rush of “Trippin’ On Teardrops” and Memphis soul-styled “For No One” to the James Bond-meets-Stevie Nicks noir of “Danny” and the wonderfully moody duet with Isaak, “Cue The Symphony.”
Accompanied by her touring band, guitarist John Paul Keith and drummer Danny Banks, with contributions by Sansone, in-demand drummer Eric Slick (Dr. Dog, Robyn Hitchcock, Brian Fallon), The Texas Gentlemen’s Dan Creamer, and Scottish troubadour Davey Horne, Atkins once again showcases her alchemical ability to transform myriad influences into singular sonic statements, leaning into the deeply personal in her ongoing quest to “write modern songs that could be part of the Great American Songbook.” Through it all, Atkins’s vivid, unabashedly dramatic voice flies far above easy comparison. Neo-classicist, retro-futurist, and transcendental medium – Dramamakes it plain that Nicole Atkins somehow remains all of those things while always wholeheartedly following her own muse.
“I’m not trying to rehash or celebrate some bygone era,” Nicole Atkins says. “I’m just taking what I like melodically from the past, and channeling it into my songs. I like to make them deeply personal. The question I come back to is – how do I make this sound exactly like me?”

JOHNNY CASH AND THE TENNESSEE TWO
Blue Train b/w Born To Lose
1962 U.S. 7” singleYou know it’s a great day when you find a pristine original Sun ☀️ 45 of your favorite Johnny Cash song.
When I was 13, back when I first started learning to play the guitar, one of my many uncles (my mother was the second youngest of 13 children), who was a huge Johnny Cash fan and a pretty good musician in his own right, taught me to play a few Johnny songs that had the chords that I knew how to play comfortably.
One of those songs was Blue Train, which 35 years later, is still my favorite Johnny Cash song.
The flip side here, “Born To Lose”, is pretty good too.
A stellar find for me.

More Charlie Rich from the Midnight Special. This is an excellent live version of his first hit, "Lonely Weekends", which originally came out on Phillips International (a subsidiary of Sun Records) in 1960.

Jerry Lee Lewis had a lot of big hits on the pop, country and R&B charts, but this was undoubtedly the Killer’s biggest, “Great Balls of Fire” in 1957. #jerryleelewis #vinyl #sunrecords #memphismusic #recordcollection

Spent yesterday in Memphis, Tennessee checking out Graceland, Sun Records/Studios, and Beale Street. So much early Rock & Roll history.
I liked the city and it makes me shake my head at the smack talkers about it. Yes, it is gritty and low income. I think most are uncomfortable about the majority African-American population which leads to the smack talk.
Definitely a city for people who love music and want to see some history.

Johnny Cash wrote “Give My Love to Rose” and recorded it with the Tennessee Two in 1957, when it was a B-side to the single “Home of the Blues.” Different versions appeared on several albums including this 1969 compilation The Singing Story Teller. #johnnycash #sunrecords #vinyl

Maybe the best episode to start with if a podcast with the title "A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs" appeals to you. #SamPhillips, #SunRecords and #Memphis. But then go back immediately and listen to episode 1. It's just all so good. #500Songs

similar to Most people found this artist and song from the philosophy of modern songs by Bob Dylan.
The fact that arguably the only rival in rockabilly to Buddy Holly as a songwriter was passed over by a record label. should remind most of us to take any evaluation of ourselves and our music with a grain of salt.

"Tracy Pendarvis"
Small town cemeteries are a lot like a really complicated novel. There are hundreds of characters and it isn't always obvious how they are connected. Growing up in the area might give you a few hints (or at least let you find the cemetery without getting lost) but doesn't help clear up many mysteries. I'm visiting this cemetery because I grew up in Dixie County, Florida and never heard anyone mention Tracy Pendarvis.
Tracy Pendarvis left Dixie County with a couple friends for Memphis in 1959. They wanted to be on Sun Records and were confident enough to make the 10-hour drive without even calling ahead. When a story starts this way you generally only see one of two endings. Either the hungry, young musicians get a door slammed in their face or get signed and race to stardom. Tracy found a third option. He was met at the door by Ernie Barton and got an audition with Sam Phillips before being signed on the spot. The result was a few solid rockabilly singles such as A Thousand Guitars, Southbound Line and Belle of the Suwannee but little commercial success. Shaun Mather has suggested that "Tracy was unlucky to be in the right place at the wrong time. He was trying to sell rockabilly records to a public that was more interested in The Night Has A Thousand Eyes than A Thousand Guitars."
A few years later Pendarvis left Sun and spent the next 30 years playing honky-tonks on the outskirts of Chicago and recording the music of others. We do get something of a happy ending though. Three decades after Tracy's Sun dream became reality A Thousand Guitars was rediscovered in the United Kingdom and he was invited to play the 1992 Hemsby Rock 'N' Roll festival. This had to have been the type of big stage Tracy dreamed of as he gassed up his car and headed to Memphis in the late-50s. Five years later Tracy Pendarvis died and was buried in this cemetery. The mid-90s Alternative Revolution mostly missed Dixie County, Florida. The only local radio station was run by a retired pro-wrestling promoter who alternated between long monologues and classic country. Since this was the only consistently static-free station at the time it provided the background music for every local barber and country store. I never heard A Thousand Guitars on this station. A decade would pass before I would hear anything by Tracy Pendarvis and more time still before I realized we shared a hometown. It is somewhat mysterious to me why Dixie County would not fully embrace a local son who spent time on Sun Records. When the local paper's masthead has spent decades celebrating being the "Home of the World's Only 4-Headed Swamp Cabbage" it seems even a cult rockabilly figure would be of interest.
Dixie County, FL was created in 1921 by splitting off the southern part of another county. The early years were hard and this cemetery has rows of children and teens who died in that first decade. Years passed and people lived through massive floods, a gill-net fishing ban and the closing of saw mills that wiped out much of the local economy. The local kid who made it to the NFL had his career cut short by injury. Things never seem to have got much easier for the children of those first settlers. Tracy Pendarvis set out for Memphis in 1959 to become a big star and for a number of reasons didn't quite make it. When Tracy died too young in early 1997 his ex-wife Margaret Pendarvis said ''He never was bitter, but he was disappointed – not really for himself but for all those who never made it.'' Now Tracy Rexford Pendarvis is buried here in his hometown. The graves are scattered randomly over a large, quiet area. The only noises are the faint sounds of cars from a distant highway and the hum of sand gnats. Families are clumped together except when old, forgotten feuds exiled someone to a distant corner. A few lived well into old age but many here just worked too hard and died young. It'd be easy to suggest the connection in this cemetery is the resting place of those who "never made it" but that is only part of the story. Tracy set off for Memphis with a dream just like his relatives settled wild swampland with a dream. Everyone buried here spent a lifetime chasing their dream. #writing #FlashMemoir #music #rockabilly #SunRecords #florida
