This week's #TuneTuesday theme is #MyFavouriteXmasSong. I first thought of Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", but since it has received a lot of exposure over the years, I decided to go for a lesser-known - but equally great - recording:
The Meditation Singers: The Spirit of Christmas (1968)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW2uL2DOpMAThis is one of the three songs the Meditation Singers recorded for the 1968 Checker Records album "A Christmas Dedication". Even with a couple of somewhat disappointing Soul Stirrers tracks on it, it is definitely one of the better Christmas albums in my household.
"The Spirit of Christmas" was written by Sonny Thompson and Maurice Dollison, and produced by Ralph Bass, all music business veterans and Chess/Checker Records regulars at the time. The song was also issued as a single, with "Blue Christmas" - another excellent Sonny Thompson composition - on the flip side. This has been easily the most-played Christmas 45 in my collection for the last decade or so.

One of my favorites by the gospel group Meditation Singers, released on the Checker label:
Meditation Singers: Stand Up And Be Counted (1968)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xmk56dpUPLsThe song was written by the profilic saxophonist/arranger/producer Gene Barge. Barge was perhaps best known for his role as "Daddy G" on "Quarter To Three", which had been a #1 pop hit for Gary 'US' Bonds in 1961.

At the end of "Since I Fell For You" there is a reference to Laura Lee's first hit record, "Dirty Man", which was issued by Chess Records and had been recorded at Rick Hall's Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Several decades later, the song was covered by Joss Stone.

RIP Sugar Pie DeSanto
I'm a little late to the memorial, time having been consumed by holiday travel, and then news of wildfires sweeping areas I just returned from, but just saw notice that at the end of the past year, we lost #SugarPieDeSanto
I was lucky I had the fortunate opportunity to see her perform memorable sets live a couple times earlier in this century in #SanFrancisco , and despite her age, she was still feisty, acrobatically bawdy & hilarious.
A relative of fellow #ChessRecords recording artist Etta James, and part Filipino (born Umpeylia Marsema Balinton ) ... , she was perhaps less renowned, but certainly worth checking out for any fans of authentic old school #RhythmandBlues music.
"I was one of the toughest women you would find, and a big mouth, and I didn’t take anything from no one,” she said in an interview in the 2011 book “Flying Saucers Rock ’n’ Roll: Conversations With Unjustly Obscure Rock ’n’ Soul Eccentrics”
I recall in more recent times, her being burned out in a 2006 fire that swept the apt building where she lived in #Oakland, and killed her husband.
But she was a tough cookie and soldiered on for many more years ...stay safe out there folks...
