Cruel Inventions
Sam Phillips puts together a helluva backing band featuring Elvis Costello, T Bone Burnett, Marc Ribot and more and releases her six album on May 28, 1991. The album was the follow-up to her amazing album, The Indescribable Wow and solidified her signature style -- a brilliantly textured blend of alt-rock, folk-rock and even some Beatlesque psychedelic pop melody. "Matchbox" is a song written and recorded by #CarlPerkins and released in 1957. #BlindLemonJefferson wrote and recorded a song entitled "Match Box Blues" in 1927, which is musically different but which contains some lyric phrases in common. "Matchbox" was recorded as a #rockabilly song by Carl Perkins in December 1956 and by fellow #SunRecords performer, #JerryLeeLewis – who played piano on the original track – in 1958. #SamPhillips.

T-Bone Burnett's wife turned her back on Christian music, to channel her secular singer-songwriter talent. It's a single from "The Indescribable Wow", which reminds me of late-era Beatles psychedelia, or the work of Bourgeois Tagg.

After ditching contemporary Christian music in favor of a secular, more pop approach, and more than a decade before providing the score for the Gilmore Girls TV series, Sam Phillips had a radio hit.
To distance herself from her CCM past, Leslie Phillips adopted her nickname Sam, and issued “The Indescribable Wow” as Sam Phillips’ debut album. Her voice, almost twee but with a smoky edge that you just know will age like Marianne Faithfull fine wine, works perfectly in the 60s psychedelic setting of “Holding On To The Earth.” I’m not sure how widely it was played on commercial radio outside of #Boston, but here it was a favorite on alternative-leaning #wfnx (RIP).
