"The Best Shrubs"
As I was in high school a vice principal was a good man with a go-to pep talk. The talk would start off by declaring that some of us were "shrubs" and not trees. Then shift to excitedly yelling that we should all be "THE BEST SHRUBS WE CAN BE!!!" He was not very discriminating about when he gave this speech. I heard it in a year book class, before a Hi-Q team trivia playoff match, and as I ate my rectangular school lunch pizza. "The Slab"
A hurricane delayed our meeting. First date force majeure. Online late one night we rescheduled – "Right now! As-is!" Sleep pants and t-shirts were good enough for Waffle House. Over coffee and pie we said the same sorts things we had sent as instant messages. To a person not a screen name. After she gave me the tour. Her cat's old collar on the rear-view mirror. A place where graffiti was allowed. The Slab by the river. Places where the young could be young. She stopped for cigarettes. The cashier had dirt on her face and ate an onion like an apple.
