  1. As I said yesterday, I’m playing with flash writing. I struggle, because I love words. But that is probably because the writers I have been most informed and shaped by also loved words. I love a good story.

In other words, I need to read more writers who tell stories with economy.

Several websites pointed me to the memoir No Relation, by Paula Carter […]

  2. It's a public secret that @BlunderBusted and myself are currently working on Untitled Comic Project #2. Another Southern Gothic Poetry Comic! William Blake wrote in terms of Duality. Here we have Innocence. There is Experience. But these coexist in life. And our comics. Comic #2 will expand on "More Snakes Than People." Flash Memoir diptychs with both comedy and tragedy. All our Innocence and Experience sharing the same life. amazon.com/More-Snakes-Than-Pe #comics #writing #poetry #FlashMemoir #florida

  3. The 90s didn't speak much of Red Flags. But they would be obvious in hindsight. Some friends picked up a guy at a Gainesville bar. Drove him an hour west to their Old Town, FL trailer. He refused to leave. That one night stand lasted six weeks. He ate all the cereal. Broke the drums. I'd visit back from college and see him there. Offer a ride back to Gainesville. He'd refuse. Say Dixie was more fun. Weeks pass. We ask if he wants to visit Gainesville for the day. He agrees. We made the hour drive together. But left the guy outside a mall. Head back to the trailer without him. This is how you got dumped in the 90s. It had all lasted longer that it should have. The Red Flags were there. Where our boredom was his fun. #writing #FlashMemoir #dating #florida

  4. There are many types of stories. A quick interaction can be expanded into a novel. A lifetime condensed for a stranger on a bus. We all just have the stories we have. Shared in many ways. The sharing is what matters. I'm a very public writer. Everything I write is recorded. Everything? Everything. This is a large part of my editing process. If it is my story, in my voice, in my words.. shouldn't I be able to read it well? These recordings are all online. Free to stream and download. The sharing is what matters. damonthomas.bandcamp.com/ #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord #sharing #bandcamp

  5. "Like The Ninjas We Were"

I really only have one karate story worth sharing. There are others of course. But those just involve injuries. Bruise porn stuff. A car crash without the car. Things could go well though. Like when we headed over from Cross City to Jacksonville for a karate tournament. Hours of county road. Up to Lake City and over through Orange Park. Avoiding the main roads. Like the ninjas we were. I had been entered into an Under-30 Green Belt Point Sparring Tournament. If you've seen Van Damme's "Bloodsport" Point Sparring is the opposite of that. Very light taps with lots of rules. Like chess with kicks. My training for this event was pretty limited. One response for every scenario – Inside Block/Back Fist. And it worked! I finished 2nd and won a trophy. A small figure atop doing a better side kick than I would ever do. We stopped off for drinks at a gas station just outside Lake City on the way back. I carried my trophy inside like a small child who had just received a zeppelin for Christmas. Back on the road I realized my 2nd Place Under-30 Green Belt Point Sparring trophy had been left in the gas station bathroom. A week later I head back and stop in to ask about the trophy. The cashier said they just had the one behind the counter. There it was. My trophy sitting beside the store's first dollar. But she said I couldn't have it. That the store won it for "kicking butt." And so I left. That store and my trophy. They had a much better story than I did. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #karate

  6. It looks like you can vote the Best Local Author here daily? Now they shall see the power of my extreme consistency! I trained myself up with regular mastodon posts. I'm going to be tough to beat! folioweekly.secondstreetapp.co #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #jacksonville

  7. A few days ago I found myself nominated for Best Local Author here in Jacksonville, FL. Flattering of course! I do write and share my work freely. But I was also nominated as Best Actor? I have a lot of projects but none include acting. At first I thought this was some error? Miscast votes perhaps. But then people started talking.. and it seems some thought these Christmas Carol photos were from a play. We were helping set up for a future photo shoot. I mostly liked the idea of dressing up as a Spooky Xmas Ghost and warning @BlunderBusted about the dangers of Big Business. So voting for Best Local Author? Yes please! Best Local Actor? You have realer options here. But they did put Dolly in the Rock Hall of Fame? So I guess me as Actor makes as much sense as anything these days. folioweekly.secondstreetapp.co #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #jacksonville

  8. Fun day out at JaxByJax X! Last year my readings were extra gloomy so I went all fun stories this year. This whole writing thing? Fairly solitary. Scribbling away alone. But when you get the chance to meet up with friends and share your stuff? Those are the good days! with @BlunderBusted @MaBones @AimsterSkitz0rz #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #jacksonville

  9. I live in a metro area of ~1.7m or so. A pretty big place. And yet somehow.. I'm nominated for best local author! Flattering enough alone.. but apparently I got enough accidental votes to get in for best local actor too. If any out there feel like voting and shaping public opinion in Jacksonville, FL? I'll appreciate your good work! folioweekly.secondstreetapp.co #voting #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #jacksonville

  10. I'll be reading at the main yearly writer fest here in Jacksonville, FL on Saturday. Near-ish? Come on out! Elsewhere? You still get this album of new Spoken Word Flash Memoir pieces. damonthomas.bandcamp.com/album #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #bandcamp

  11. At times people ask.. what will you read at writing fests? An easy question to answer! The sorts of things I share here regularly. There are no secrets. As Marcus Aurelius wrote – "The Pythagoreans bid us in the morning look to the heavens, that we may be reminded of those bodies that continually do the same things and in the same manner perform their work, and also be reminded of their purity and nudity. For there is no veil over a star." And I'll be reading this Saturday! Anywhere near Jacksonville, FL? Come on out! jaxbyjax.com/ #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #jacksonville

  12. A lot of turkey talk today. But after I was attacked by a turkey that one time? Jerks get what they get! #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #turkey

  13. Mark Twain knew truth to be stranger than fiction. "Fiction, after all, has to make sense." When you share stories you get questions. "Is all of this true?" What parts do you mean? "Does your cousin really have a pet skunk?" With all that I've shared... this is what you doubt? At JaxByJax X I'll only have true stories. I grew up in a very weird place. What need do I have for fiction? 12/2! Jacksonvillle, FL! Free!

  14. It all happened so suddenly. But these things always do. I had volunteered with a church youth group because I knew how boring small town summers could get for a kid. And now I was to be a guest preacher one Sunday. No notice. No training. Just head up there and see what the Holy Spirit has to say. It went about as well as you might expect. A 20 minute Andy Kaufman meets Jesus bit that was recorded for those would couldn't make it. "The Building Decayeth" is why I've never ran for office with any atheist group. I know that tape will pop up in oppo research. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #religion #SpokenWord

  15. We lived in a small town. Most were poor. The school was in bad shape. "The Best Shrubs" is the story of how one guy tried to keep us motivated. Even our pep talks had esteem issues. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #SpokenWord

  16. Child labor is in the news again. In small town Florida there was no debate. They just sent us kids out into the tobacco fields. All sand and snakes. Paid a few bucks in cash we'd spend on toys. Something that will always be true... the less a job pays? The harder you'll work. #writing #FlashMemoir #poetry #florida #farming

  17. "Sometimes Subtlety Just Won't Do"

As I was working at a nursing home an old guy pissed in the ice machine. When asked why he just said he needed to go. And the ice machine was as good as anywhere else. A sign was placed on the machine door – "Do not use this ice!" But then we heard another employee doubt this had happened. Said it looked like tea to her. The sign was then changed to – "Ice contaminated with urine!" Sometimes subtlety just won't do. #writing #FlashMemoir #subtlety

  18. "The Best Shrubs"

As I was in high school a vice principal was a good man with a go-to pep talk. The talk would start off by declaring that some of us were "shrubs" and not trees. Then shift to excitedly yelling that we should all be "THE BEST SHRUBS WE CAN BE!!!" He was not very discriminating about when he gave this speech. I heard it in a year book class, before a Hi-Q team trivia playoff match, and as I ate my rectangular school lunch pizza. Constant reminders to be the "best shrub you can be!" #writing #FlashMemoir #florida #PepTalk

  19. "B-Roll"

Errol Morris' 1981 documentary "Vernon, Florida" helped rural FL to become known for its quaint settings and quirky characters. This image is at odds with the film's production. Plans to make a "Nub City" film (due to a high number of lost limb insurance claims) were scrapped after threats and violence from residents. Someone tried to hit the cinematographer with a truck and plans changed. "Vernon, Florida" was cobbled together from B-Roll footage. Rural Florida can be quaint and quirky but originally you only talked about it after death threats prevented you from mentioning all the intentional amputations. #writing #FlashMemoir #florida #movies #StorySunday

  24. "Drinking Perfume"

We played Truth or Dare as teens. For us there were mostly Dares since in small towns you already know the Truths. Gathering at the end of a limerock road to see a first kiss. Now the Dares help mark events. "Is that the party where you drank perfume?" Nights of Sheet Cake and Vanilla Fields. All who were there still know our Truth. It was hard. With limited resources we Dared to head out into the world. No one I know ever refused their Dare. #writing #FlashMemoir #florida #TruthOrDare

  25. "The Slab"

A hurricane delayed our meeting. First date force majeure. Online late one night we rescheduled – "Right now! As-is!" Sleep pants and t-shirts were good enough for Waffle House. Over coffee and pie we said the same sorts things we had sent as instant messages. To a person not a screen name. After she gave me the tour. Her cat's old collar on the rear-view mirror. A place where graffiti was allowed. The Slab by the river. Places where the young could be young. She stopped for cigarettes. The cashier had dirt on her face and ate an onion like an apple. We pretended not to notice. It only seemed polite. #writing #FlashMemoir #FirstDate #florida

  26. A video (3m43s) of me reading at the main yearly writer event here. I do have a Southern Accent but it is tricky for many define. Mostly I grew up in a remote north Florida swamp and then read a lot of books. #video #writing #reading #SpokenWord #florida #jacksonville #JaxByJax #SouthernAccent #SouthernGothic #FlashMemoir

  27. "Secret Plant Cave"

Outside the old Burdine's entrance to the Oaks Mall in Gainesville there were these tall bushes. You walked up a little slope and ducked under some vines to find yourself inside a secret plant cave. Out of sight. Surrounded by Nature. I'd go there as a teen. Mall trips were very long back then. Kevin Smith was not exaggerating in "Mallrats." Once after CD shopping I headed outside. A plant cave is a good place to read My Bloody Valentine liner notes. Ducking under vines I saw a teen girl was already there. With a loud "Dammit!" I crawled back out of our secret place. Life gave us more meet-cutes than privacy back then. #writing #FlashMemoir #MallRats #MyBloodyValentine #MeetCute
