I'm currently writing a chapter for an edited volume that reflect on almost 10 years (2012-2021) of DIY urbanism and micro-scale architecture projects the non-profit I co-founded in 2009 (back then we called it a 'do-tank') has developed with local activists and social enterprises in Central-South Italy.
It's a kind of memory-lane rabbit hole journey, where nostalgia mixed with missed opportunities, mistakes, and naivety.

They chatted with Lakshmi Rengarajan (from the podcast Land of Giants) on dating apps, the crisis in masculinity and how dating has been fundamentally altered for the formation of relationships (by design), and the leading cause of the state of despair for a great many people in society. Having a single identity and being able to rely on hashtags — including the ability of clients to mute hashtags (so for instance someone could opt out of “politics” tags or selectively mute content of any hashtag kind) — might be the solution I would want, and then this could work orthogonally to joining a server that is more holistic (as opposed to a single interest)…

Another thing I want to get clear in my own head is what techs serve which purposes. Twitter/Mastodon is fundamentally 'microblogging' still -- it descends from Livejournal which in turn comes from diaries. Its core is about personal reflection, which w/#socialtech becomes broadcasting.

#Discord/#Slack descends from IRC & is about live connection. I see people leaving Twitter for here & Discord & the latter fills some needs surprisingly well. How do these fit?

I think that networking smaller, internally moderated communities is moving in the right direction, but I worry about the loss of collective consensus that comes from having a large single social entity. I can believe that these things work themselves out -- that somehow that collective consensus can still be harnessed. But we're many layers away from that point.

One thing I've been thinking about a lot is how to bridge the world I came from (open maker internet) with the world I largely find myself in (ivory tower AI).

There're a lot of metaphors that can inform where the internet goes next. I think a lot about intentional creation of high dimensional spaces. What are the orthogonal dimensions that define human values? How can we construct systems capable of parsing them? How can we understand them ourselves?
