  1. Can't believe I've let much of the summer pass by without reminding everyone about these maps that I once made of something very important: the distribution of blue moon–flavor ice cream.

  3. not all doom and gloom in German lands: 25 years after the initial Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), the crossing finally happened!

“Together, wind and solar power generated 225 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity – accounting for 44% of the total in 2025 – with just 217TWh (43%) coming from fossil fuels.”

  5. This visualizes diagnostic pottery sherds from Poggio Civitate, an Etruscan site south of Siena, Italy.

More similar sherds group together. You can adjust the weights of different attributes to change groupings of the sherds. The "Embedding" slider is for similarity based on a small language model.

It's a big file, so it takes some time to fully download and start.

BREAKING: An historical puzzle bugging me for 16 years finally solved! M.F. van Langren's secret code,
accompanying the first statistical graph, has been cracked. Turns out his method of finding longitude was based on a water clock, not his famous moon map.

  8. RE: floss.social/@hywan/1169253636

This remains one of the very best #datavis I’ve ever seen.
Looking at the "spent since page load” go to MILLIONS in seconds is deeply eye opening / “radicalising”.

For context, Oxfam estimates that solving world hunger is would cost $37 billions/y. Only 1/6 of what Meta spend on “AI” to get... NOTHING.

  10. Since the most recent update to Mastodon, and the introduction of Collections (starter packs), I've been slowly adding folks to some of my collections.

Most of the people I see in my timeline, and would like to add to a Collection like #DataVis, or #SciArt, or #CreativeCoding? Most of these folks have permissions set to forbid being added to a Collection.

If you're hesitant? I *think*, but need to confirm, that there is a permission level that lets you confirm or deny a request.

The purpose of an infographic should be to show emergent properties that can be observed by overlaying different sets of data. This one performs that task admirably.

  16. Who controls a visualization? @framoriniii presents our paper »Critical Interactivity: Exploration and Narration in Data Visualization« at #EuroVis2026 in Nottingham!

📆 Today 4pm in Room F4: Design Frameworks & Critical Perspectives

We see critical interactivity as the negotiation of authority and agency between authors and viewers. Across four case studies, we show how it links exploration and narration.

    📄 Open access in IEEE CG&A: doi.org/10.1109/MCG.2025.35446

    abc.net.au/news/2026-05-24/vis

Well, there's an abundance of mice every so often since over a century ago in Australia. Apparently it's this year again. Maybe they need some mouse eating rabbit or frog. Or some Cat like Dingo!? #datavis #DataViz #Australia

  22. I’m missing six whole wars and it’s only been a year Also, I think I’m supposed to say #datavis or #dataviz

  23. A quick #introduction using an obscene number of hashtags to hopefully reach people I want to be in community with! I make #art and #software and particularly like #linocuts and #embroidery and I also enjoy #visiblemending.

On the tech side my pet topics are currently #datavis (currently looking at #publictransport in my area) and #rdf #ontologies (what can we practically and ethically do with them?)

Would love to follow you if you're interested in any of these things.

  24. Happy birthday to founder of modern nursing, social reformer, statistician, data visualization innovator and writer Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910)!
Nightingale earned the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp” during the Crimean War, from a phrase used by The Times, describing her as a “ministering angel” making her solitary rounds of the hospital at night with “a little lamp in her hand”. 🧵1/
