  1. Looks as though it might be a good week for sky watching. We are expecting the Lyrid meteor shower. The moon is in crescent which should help, despite the increasing amount of unnecessary space junk being launched by Must et al. So up at midnight.

Here’s Lyrid hoping for clear skies, we won’t make it up to Galloway or Highlands but the sky is fairly dark here where we are in The Borders so fingers crossed and the forecast is promising anyway.

  2. Fireball Spectacle: Daylight Streak Ignites Skies Across Five States

A bright fireball meteor was seen across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut on Tuesday, April 7, at 2:34 PM ET. It disintegrated over New Jersey.

  3. Hundreds of people in five states saw a very bright meteor in the sky on Tuesday afternoon. It was faster than a jet plane.

🔴 A blood moon is coming.

On March 3, 2026, the Moon will slip fully into Earth’s shadow in a total lunar eclipse, taking on the deep copper tones shaped by Earth’s atmosphere. Even in shadow, sunlight refracted through the air around our planet can paint the Moon in the warm colors of a global sunset.

For the full science behind lunar eclipses and why the Moon reddens, see the article in the original post. ✍️

  5. A quick guide to the total lunar eclipse — and the weather
Tonight’s full moon will turn into a red moon during the last total lunar eclipse we’ll be able to see for the next two years — but whether we’ll truly be able to see it with our own eyes depends on the weather. And that’s an iffy proposition for Pacific Northwest skywatchers.

  6. Endgame 🔧✨ | 10 Observatories in 10 Weeks - Week 10

Week 10 — the final push in the 10 Observatories in 10 Weeks challenge.
No big builds, no dramatic chaos… just the long list of jobs that actually bring an observatory field to life.

    This week we:

Updated the Starlings that will control all observatory operations

Cladded the server room (with John helping on Tuesday and Wednesday before sneaking off to see AC/DC)

Sealed the observatory floors… and sealed them again

    Installed cameras in every observatory

Mounted the battery chargers for the backup power systems

Amid the grind, Brenton arrived just in time for a surprise aurora lighting up the sky. Then on Thursday, Josh came up to finish configuring the Starlings so each observatory can open and close remotely — one of the last major steps before the site goes fully live.

After ten intense weeks, countless late nights, storms, wind disasters, busted tools, and far too many trips to the hardware store… we finally reached the end.

This is Week 10. This is Endgame.

  7. SpaceX Rocket Stuns NC Skywatchers at Dawn
A SpaceX Falcon 9 launch lit up the North Carolina sky early Saturday, creating a stunning “twilight phenomenon.” The rocket, carrying Starlink satellites, was visible from cities like Raleigh and Durham, sparking awe and viral photos.

  8. Get ready to see a total lunar eclipse (or maybe not)
The first total lunar eclipse since 2022 will turn the full moon an eerie shade of red on the night of March 13-14 --- but your chances of seeing it with your own eyes will depend on where you are.

North Americans should have great seats for the eclipse this time around. The key phases of the show,

  9. Coming soon! — Nova explosion visible to the naked eye expected any day now

Sometime between May and September, a #WhiteDwarf is expected to go thermonuclear.

    Jacek Krywko - 5/21/2024,

"When you look at the northern sky, you can follow the arm of the Big Dipper as it arcs around toward the bright star called Arcturus. Roughly in the middle of that arc, you'll find the Northern Crown constellation, which looks a bit like a smiley face. Sometime between now and September, if you look to the left-hand side of the Northern Crown, what will look like a new star will shine for five days or so.

"This star system is called T. Coronae Borealis, also known as the #BlazeStar, and most of the time, it is way too dim to be visible to the naked eye. But once roughly every 80 years, a violent thermonuclear explosion makes it over 10,000 times brighter. The last time it happened was in 1946, so now it’s our turn to see it."

  10. Return of the Blimp - Back in Town I: Almost one year ago the Zeppelin NT came to Mülheim for some test flights, now it's back for good taking over from Luftschiff Theo: starting today it will be flying around the Ruhrgebiet, stationed at our local airport Essen/Mülheim! #planespotting #blimpspotting #blimp #zeppelin #zeppelinnt #goodyear #wdl #skywatching foto.bibra-medien.de/2024/05/0

  11. Return of the Blimp - New Zeppelin Edition 5 - The last photo so far of the Zeppelin NT visiting our Essen/Mülheim airport last weekend. We will get our own Zeppelin NT sometime this fall or next year, but the trial run seems to have been successful and the next flights are already bookable for Spring 2024. #planespotting #blimpspotting #blimp #zeppelin #zeppelinnt #goodyear #wdl #skywatching foto.bibra-medien.de/2023/05/2

  12. Return of the Blimp - New Zeppelin Edition 2 - A proper photo of the Zeppelin NT flying over Mülheim and Essen this weekend - apparently it's not the one that will remain permanently here, but just a test run and our "own" airship will arrive this Autumn and fly regularly next year! #planespotting #blimpspotting #blimp #zeppelin #zeppelinnt #goodyear #wdl #skywatching foto.bibra-medien.de/2023/05/2

  13. Return of the Blimp - New Zeppelin Edition - Two years after the last flight of our local blimp Luftschiff Theo, which now resides on ground at our local airport, a new blimp showed up in the skies today! It's a Zeppelin NT that is now stationed at the Essen/Mülheim airport and will fly regular sightseeing trips in place of its predecessor. #planespotting #blimpspotting #blimp #zeppelin #zeppelinnt #goodyear #goodyearblimp #wdl #skywatching foto.bibra-medien.de/2023/05/1
