  2. In a scientific first, they successfully retrieved #pathogen genomes from medieval #parchment and paper #manuscripts 📖 - revealing that historical documents are an under-recognised source of ancient #disease data. (3/4) +1

  3. @retroadventurers.bsky.social I had a lot of fun coming up with this conceit, playing the OLDEST and the YOUNGEST editions of #Zork 1 to come from the MIT/#Infocom core teams. This is a slightly short episode (as playing the same game twice is a bit cheeky given our format), but both these versions of the game are a must-see for completists in the genre.

I mention in passing that I always had a bit of #ImpostorSyndrome around Zork, as I have held the domain `zork.net` since the mid/late 90s. I always felt like I was simultaneously dodging #Activision's lawyers and feeling awkward around the die-hard fans who played until they got every last point. Now that #Microsoft has released everything under an open licence, I should probably put a free build up on my site in #Parchment to celebrate!

The Zork-285 game is interesting in that it did not call itself "Zork"! You'll have to listen to the latest #RetroAdventurers episode to find out what it says. #InteractiveFiction

  8. Lots of new folks around, so I thought I'd surface again the #OnThisDay posts of ancient (mostly #Greek or #Roman) documents on #papyrus, #parchment, and/or #ostraka (ceramic sherds) by @ryanfb. They're of interest to #archaeology #ancientHistory and #classics people especially.

His latest (today) is about a labeled jar of wheat (a commercial sample), dating to 2 BCE and found at the site of Oxyrhynchos in Egypt: botsin.space/@ryanfb/109268607
