I am generally out of touch with news – I’ve basically stopped looking for the sake of my mental health
So I got a nasty double shock when I received an email today from the Scottish Green Party’s Maggie Chapman (Equalities spokesperson) and Jen Bell (Co-convenor of the Rainbow Greens, the party’s LGBTQIA+ group):
1. Apparently, 12 days ago a Court of Session judge ruled that the UK government were entitled to use section 35 of the Scotland Act 1998 to overrule the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill on 17 January 😳
(The GRR had been on the verge of becoming law, after the Scottish Parliament voted 88–39 in favour of the Bill on 22 December last year)
2. The Scottish Government, who brought the Court of Session case against the UK government, have revealed today that they will not appeal the judge’s decision 😞
Instead they propose to keep the Bill in cryogenic stasis until such time as a trans-friendly UK government agrees to respect the Scottish Parliament’s democratic process

UK KC quoting discredited UN rapporteur as evidence, the one who's been hanging about with UK anti-trans folk since she came over all terfy. Alister Jack relies on her biased report, rather than the evidential UN report by rapporteur Victor Madrigal-Borloz, which said no evidence found that anyone has been changing their gender for criminal purposes. Dorothy Bain called Alsalem's report "hostile communications" yesterday AM.

In fact even if you're a #Labour supporter and reject #Scottish #independence, you should be wary of letting a Tory government exercise power so unaccountably against the democratic #devolution arrangement Labour set up.

Section 35 of the Scotland Act 1998 shows UK devolution to be a nonsense, and Scotland a vassal of England.
In the absence of Scottish independence, the offending clause should be be repealed so that Scotland can make decisions on devolved matters without fear of an English veto.

On this day in 1988 the “#Lesbian Avengers” abseiled into the House of Lords to protest the enactment of #Section28 which banned the discussion of #homosexuality in schools.
We need more of this energy today.

This was #EmilyThornberry's excuse for not opposing the #Section35.
I get it that as a shadow minister she doesn't want to admit she was whipped and undermine the leadership, but making up some lie that the #GRRBill is some kind of cynical SNP "parliamentary theatre" being done against trans people's wishes and not a serious attempt at reform backed by both trans people and unionist parties in the parliament (including hers) is gaslighting. She should be ashamed of it.

I'd forgotten just how reactionary he and so many New Labour figures were, including in his case trying to keep #Section28. What on earth is he doing advising #Labour now? Surely #Starmer didn't take advice from him on what line to take on #Section35 given his history?

Almost every single time there's a trans rights protest, the bigot press are able to ignore the whole thing and instead attack it and any politicians who support or attend it as "extremist" solely because of a tiny few attendees displaying violent slogans such as "kill TERFs" who are not immediately ejected.
Tolerating one single violent slogan at your trans rights protest is directly undermining anything positive you might hope to achieve.
