  3. CW: Scottish politics, SNP, transphobia

The SNP leadership race following Nicola Sturgeon’s surprise resignation is extremely uncomfortable for LGBTQIA+ people, and particularly for those of us who are trans :heart_transgender:

It’s surprisingly reminiscent of another party’s recent leadership contest, in which candidates tried to out-bigot each other – and the transphobic UK media are lapping it up 😔

Wanted to boost @EllisCrawford’s thread, but needed to add a content warning:

  4. Excellent speech from @chican3ry calling for #GenderAbolition not #GenderRecognition and calling on the crowd to go further than trying to reclaim #GRAreform, which was Tory policy under Theresa May.

  5. Oh of course they fucking did!
UK goverment, once again shit on trans people in an unprecedented move that risks BREAKING UP THE UNITED KINGDOM!
They really hate us that much that they're risking the fucking country on it!

  6. While the passing of the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill was a momentous step forward, it was bitter sweet for those who tirelessly campaigned and fought so hard for it but who were taken before it could be realised. So sad that Leeze Lawrence couldn’t have been here to see the fruits of her labour but I’m hoping wherever she is, that she’s smiling. For on Thursday 22nd December 2022, true equality for trans people came that bit closer.

  7. CW: Transphobia / Twitter / Mumsnet

This is a really frightening development with a suggestion from a Mumsnet user that trans people availing themselves of a gender recognition certificate should be added to a publicly available list. Trans and non-binary people just want to live their life in peace and without hassle for just being themselves. This escalation is terrifying. Original post calling this out is from India Willoughby at @IndiaWilloughby

  8. The difference between Mastodon and Twitter is stark. I posted the news about the #GRAreform passing in Scotland and despite much higher interaction here, there has only been a handful of negative or insulting comments, whereas Twitter is awash with some really awful comments and threats.

Definitely enjoying being here much more than Twitter.

Hope you all have a really wonderful Christmas if you celebrate and if you don’t, then I hope you can at least have a nice break over the festive period 🎄 x

  9. CW: Scottish Politics

As has been highlighted by others, the behaviour of the Scottish Conservatives in ScotParl these past few days has been incredibly unedifying and the cheering on of a possible attempt to block the legislation in Westminster really shows what the Tories think of Scotland and the Parliament which serves it.

The Tories have not won an majority at an election in Scotland for nearly six decades. King Charles was 7 years old when a majority in Scotland last voted for a Tory government. Something the UK Tory govt must be aware of is just how much damage an attempt to block this legislation will do to the notion that the UK is a modern functioning democracy. It would undermine the constitutional settlement and put the very notion of devolution at risk.

I’d say to the UK government that should they seek to intervene and attempt to block this legislation, they will be the authors of the fall of the union as we know it. It will be nigh impossible for this charade to continue as-is and for many this overstep will signal the beginning of the end for the union. The impact will be so much more than simply removing or arresting the effect of a piece of legislation, it will lay bare the fractures within the very foundations of the union and constitutional settlement.

The people of Scotland vote for who represents them at their parliament and by virtue of securing a majority, the SNP and the Scottish Greens have the right to move forward to realise their respective manifesto commitments galvanised by their mandate.

Scotland turned a corner today and while this legislation is historic and signals a fundamental change and progression in Scotland, the work here is far from finished. The legislation doesn’t go far enough and doesn’t help or empower non-binary people.

The Tories will always find a way to attempt to stymie progression and seek to assemble barriers in the way of societal progress unless such progress serves them or those who bankroll or have an interest in their party.

For Scotland to be the forward-thinking, progressive and caring beacon it can be, the full levers of power need to rest with its national parliament and the people of Scotland should be the architects of their own future. Decisions affecting Scotland should be taken in Scotland.

I guess that is extra evidence that we're never count to get the #GRAReform in the rest of the UK.
Oh well, back to begging some anonymous solicitor to recognise my gender...

  11. So wonderful to wake up to the news that the country of my ancestors has passed a a historic gender recognition law.

It is disappointing that these laws had to be fought so hard to pass with lives and well-being of Trans, Gender-diverse, and Non-binary folk being placed under scrutiny and their rights even being up for debate.

Congratulations Scotland, I hope that these laws are enacted elsewhere.

  13. Big ups to #Scotland today! Here's hoping the rest of TERF Island will follow their lead 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏳️‍⚧️

  14. Scottish Parliament: passes #GRAReform by overwhelming 69-31%

British media: reports it like it barely scraped through

  15. Well done Scotland! Sin sibh fhèin, Alba! :trans_heart: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #GRAReform

  16. To echo what others have said: when #GRAreform in Scotland has been fought tooth and nail the entire way (multiple public consultations, many hours of parliamentary debate), when it affects almost nobody aside from the recipient of the GRC, you really have to question whether there’s any point in fighting for incremental reform. If the tiniest, arguably most token thing, is fought so hard… why not fight for the radical?

  17. I think it was @elliebgomersall who said that it's poetic that the GRR bill would get passed on the solstice, just as the days start to lengthen. So here we are - hopefully this is just a start.
