  1. I’ve been reading The Critic for a while, but I’m considering unfollowing it for good after it published one of the most revolting pieces of text I’ve read in my life - unless they take it back, apologize, and from now on refuse to publish any incoherent, ignorant and whataboutist pile of shit written by #MiriamCates, a woman blinded by unjustified ultra-conservative Boomer grudge that isn’t even justified by her age - and who, unfortunately, also happens to serve as a British Tory MP.

Miriam Cates’ articles can usually be summarized as:

    1. Students are slightly grown up teenagers with no clue of what happens around them and we shouldn’t care of what they protest about.

    2. Students are protesting against Israel, but they aren’t protesting about all the other wars in the world, thus students are antisemitic.

    3. Students are a privileged class shielded from the outside world, whose education is funded by taxpayers, and they should just shut the fuck up and study whatever taxpayers fund their education for, and become doctors, engineers and lawyers fast without protesting.

    To be clear:

    1. Since the 1960s, ALL the student protests, without a single exception, have proved to be on the right side of history. Whether it’s for the rights of the racially oppressed minorities, for gay rights, for workers’ rights, against the war in Vietnam, against the war in Iraq, against inaction on climate change, or against the neoliberal greed that caused a worldwide crisis and damaged our whole generation. When students take on the streets in big numbers, we’re witnessing a new generation forged in the ideology of the previous one that starts to take a stance against what they see wrong in it. We have a duty of listening to the brightest minds of tomorrow, and take their criticism of our ideas and their vision of the future very seriously.

    2. There’s a long list of wars that students have protested against over the past century. From Vietnam to Ukraine, going through Afghanistan and Iraq. It’s nothing specific against Israel. Whoever keeps playing the antisemitic card against those who criticize Netanyahu’s fascist government is someone who doesn’t have any better ideological cards to play. And whoever reacts with “then what about all the other wars in the world?” is an insignificant whataboutist desperate to deflect criticism onto literally anything else except for the side they’ve decided to support - if Miriam takes all the other wars in the world so seriously then where are her articles about the war in Sudan?

    3. Publicly funded education should be a founding principle of any civilized country. The degree of civilization of a country is measured by how many kids are given the opportunity to live better lives, learn more skills and be exposed to more knowledge than their parents. Miriam complains that the families of kids who can’t afford college are also forced to pay through their taxes for the education of those who go to college. So instead of working to ensure that everyone can afford higher education (like the Nordics do), she advocates to cut all funding to public education, on the grounds that it’s unfair that a peasant whose kid can’t go to college pays the college fees to someone else’s kid. Well, you know what happens if you remove that? That even less kids will be able to afford college, unless they have deep pocketed families funding their education for years! I would have never managed to graduate myself, had I had to rely only on my parents and a couple of underpaid part-time jobs! So here Miriam isn’t advocating for fairer college access, she’s just advocating for turning academia into a place that only the wealthy can afford - and that’s based on the extremely prejudicial view that the kids of the wealthy will make less noise and protest less compared to the kids of the working class.

    4. The politicians, diplomats, economists, managers, doctors, engineers, scientists and lawyers of tomorrow have the fucking right of protesting against the mess we do in this world today, because they’re the ones who will have to fix it tomorrow.

Now please The Critic take down this piece of garbage and apologize before even more uproar comes.

  11. CW: UK Politics - Immigration

So hard right MP Miriam Cates, said closing the health care visa scheme would reduce the number of care workers coming to Britain by “about 100,000”.

In fact 61,414 ‘Skilled Worker - Health and Care’ visas were issued in UK last year.

They can't even be bothered to check their facts.

Oh, and she has no idea how much a health care worker gets paid.

She is, to put it politely as thick as mince. Like the rest of her crew.

  12. Late addition, but I just noticed that #MiriamCates (also of the CSG) actually went there and dropped in a reference to "#CulturalMarxism". She knows perfectly well what it means.

She was condemned in pretty strong terms by #JohnMann, the Tories' "antisemitism tsar", who directly called it antisemitism:
    jewishnews.co.uk/tory-mp-conde

Will she face any consequences? Of course not. And will he resign, when the whole reason he left Labour was the party's tolerance of antisemitism? We'll see.

#JacobReesMogg near-admitting that #VoterID was an attempt at "gerrymandering"
#MiriamCates dogwhistling/foghorning "great replacement" conspiracism and US forced-birtherism by calling for "more babies"
#DouglasMurray: there's nothing wrong with nationalism just because "the Germans mucked up"

  25. *Already* Tory backbencher #MiriamCates has invoked the spectre of "cultural marxism", the far-right antisemitic conspiracy theory. #Braverman also mentioned it a few years back, as have various members of the far-right #CommonSenseGroup

We now have a Labour MP openly announcing a partnership with a Tory far-right Christian fundamentalist (who openly states being trans is a "mental health problem") on the front page of the most anti-Labour newspaper in the country… yet still she has the Labour whip.

  29. Vile from #DavidBlunkett, viler to watch #BBC panel openly cheering it. Even defends #MiriamCates' despicable, hateful speech as "perfectly reasonable"!

I'd forgotten just how reactionary he and so many New Labour figures were, including in his case trying to keep #Section28. What on earth is he doing advising #Labour now? Surely #Starmer didn't take advice from him on what line to take on #Section35 given his history?
