  1. "In 2023, 60 per cent of Australians rejected a constitutionally recognised Voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. A body that could only make representations, only on matters concerning the people whose ancestors have been here sixty thousand years.
"Too much, the No campaign shrieked. Division. Privilege. Special treatment.
"Nine months later, Anthony Albanese handed Jillian Segal what the Voice never dreamed of asking for. Not a right to be heard. Power. No election. No parliamentary vote. No hearing. A three year commission reporting personally to the Prime Minister, with a mandate reaching into every campus, newsroom, classroom, gallery, charity, arts contract and visa file in the Commonwealth."

  6. Foreign influence in Australia

"The reach [of the Israel lobby] extends into the newsrooms and it has been there for decades. Veteran ABC journalist John Lyons documented it in his 2021 book Dateline Jerusalem, writing that in forty years of journalism he had never encountered a lobby as formidable, well-funded, or relentlessly effective as the pro-Israel lobby in Australia, and that material the lobby succeeded in suppressing here was routinely published in Israel without consequence or controversy."

  12. Is Australia missing out on a proper gas tax because the mining lobby scared Labor off before Budget night?
Michael West reports that Labor was looking at winding back diesel fuel rebates for big miners and taxing gas exporters, before both ideas suddenly junked. An insider told MWM that "We can’t afford another fight with BHP” echoing the campaign that helped bring down Kevin Rudd in 2010.

  13. Important research and documentation that businesses that profit from consumer data collection are lobbying governments to mandate age verification:

"Meta Platforms: Lobbying, Dark Money, and the App Store Accountability Act
An open-source intelligence investigation into how Meta Platforms built a multi-channel influence operation to pass age verification laws that shift regulatory burden from social media platforms onto Apple and Google's app stores."

A photo booth company that caters to weddings, #lobbying events in D.C., and #engagement #parties has exposed a cache of peoples’ photos, with the revellers likely unaware that their sometimes drunken antics have been collected and insecurely stored by the company for anyone to download.

  15. Lauren McGaughy from The Texas Newsroom reveals Elon Musk's heightened lobbying in Texas for the 2025 legislative session, outpacing previous years. His team, representing Tesla, SpaceX, and X Corp., invested significantly in gifts and meals for state officials, while transparency laws shield specific disclosures. With limited insights from his 12 lobbyists, it raises questions about lobbying practices. 20. #Lobbying groups representing #NewYorkLife, #LincolnFinancial Group, #Prudential #Financial & other companies first pushed back against the newly proposed #regulations before suing to topple them entirely. Now the govt’s latest attempt to protect #retirees is in political & #legal limbo…

It is the latest example of a pervasive pattern: As the #Biden admin tries to impose new restrictions on #powerful industries, those #businesses successfully turn to #Congress & the #courts for a reprieve.

  21. «A just-released analysis showed that “agricultural pesticides can increase your risk for some cancers just as much as smoking,” says co-author Isain Zapata, an associate professor of research and statistics at Rocky Vista University in Colorado. For example, living in places with high pesticide use increased the risk of colon and pancreatic cancers by more than 80 percent, results that surprised even the researchers.»

  23. Most of arguments against anti-encryption don't mention the very possible fact that high-profile criminal will still pursue encrypted communication (remember EncroChat?); what backdoor effectively does is to provide low-hanging fruits, aka petty crimes, for law enforcement via mass surveillance.

Plus how police and social media employees tend to abuse their access.

Eliciting "fuck the police" hatred is another effective, though not necessary preferable, way to gain more traction on public support.

Revealing that corporates benefit from surveillance tech are behind lobbying firms is nevertheless good effort, but that has been in the tobacco playbook all along.
