  1. Well, it appears that #ScottishLabour have gone full transphobe.

To think that in the last parliament they were solidly behind #GenderRecognitionReform. Whichever way you slice it, they are succeeding only in giving categorical proof of being both unprincipled and bigoted.

  2. CW: UK politics, Labour, transphobia

Not a great week so far for trans people in the UK

On Monday, shadow minister for women and equalities Anneliese Dodds MP used an opinion column in the Guardian to announce Labour’s new stance on gender recognition reform, hugely weakened from the kind of reform they supported in Scotland last year: theguardian.com/commentisfree/

Indeed, Dodds had the gall to say that the Scottish Government’s reform bill – which was supported by most Labour MSPs and would have become law had Westminster not blocked it – was ‘cavalier’ and ‘more about picking a fight with Westminster than bringing about meaningful change’! Seriously?!

On Tuesday, ‘gender-critical’ ‘feminist’ Rosie Duffield MP unsurprisingly lent support to the new proposals, which she says are ‘going in the right direction’ for ‘biological women’: theguardian.com/politics/live/

And today (Wednesday), leader of the opposition Keir Starmer MP said:

‘Firstly, a woman is an adult female, so let’s clear that one up …

[You mean, adult female *human being*, or are female butterflies also women?]

‘We don’t think that self-identification is the right way forward. We’ve reflected on what happened in Scotland …

[Rather, what happened *to* Scotland, when the UK government blocked competent legislation without warning]

‘We’ve set out that we want to modernise the process, get rid of some of the indignities in the process, keep it a medical process.

[*Some* of the indignities. Nice /s]

‘We’ve always said, I’ve continued to say, and Sunday, when we completed our policy forum, allowed us to be clear that there should be safe places, safe spaces, for women, particularly in relation to violence against women and girls.’

    [So what?]

Starmer lacks the positive values and qualities of his predecessor

On trans rights as on so many other issues, he’d rather tread lightly for fear of actually being seen to *oppose* the Tory government’s horrific agenda

  3. CW: Scottish politics, endemic UK media transphobia

Here’s the Scottish Daily Express’s take today on Humza Yousaf’s announcement that he will challenge the UK government’s use of ‘Section 35’ to block gender recognition reform (my emphases):

‘The SNP's gender reforms are *"not controversial"* and Humza Yousaf is right to challenge the UK Government for blocking them, the party's deputy leader at Westminster [Mhairi Black] has said.

‘The *hugely controversial* Gender Recognition Reform Bill was stopped by Scottish Secretary Alister Jack using a Section 35 order. Polls show it is unpopular with voters and Mr Yousaf's leadership rivals, Kate Forbes and Ash Regan, both campaigned to dump it.’

    😔

Yesterday, the UK Government’s Secretary of State for Scotland, Alister Jack, refused to answer to the Scottish Parliament’s Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee regarding his decision to block reform of the Gender Recognition Act in Scotland

Please join me in adding your name to this letter by the @ScottishGreens, urging him to reconsider:

Of course he hasnt said a word against the opponents of #GenderRecognitionReform.

  6. For the first time in the history, Westminster has outright vetoed a Scottish law passed by the Scottish Parliament.

Only 11 out of #Labour's 175 MPs voted to defend Scottish democracy tonight.

The Tories will see this as the first step in reducing the power of the #ScottishParliament.

•Edinburgh, demo co-organised by LGBT+ wings of most Scottish political parties, outside Queen Elizabeth House (UK gov’s Scottish HQ), Thursday 19th January, 1.30pm.
•Glasgow, demo organised by local LGBT+ activists, Buchanan Steps, Saturday 21st January, 11am.
•Aberdeen, demo organised by LGBT+ and student activists, Mercat Cross, Castlegate, Thursday 19th January, 1pm.

  8. (3) Trans people across Scotland have endured seven years of being dangerously misrepresented in public discourse. We are deeply concerned about the impact of misinformation around what this Bill actually does, and the perception that it creates that women’s rights and the rights of trans people are in conflict. They are not.

  9. (2) There are currently a number of very real threats to women’s rights in Scotland and the UK including but not limited to poverty, the cost of living crisis, cuts to services, rape conviction rates and the experiences of immigrant and refugee women. We find it particularly concerning that so much political and media attention has been devoted to the debate around this Bill in place of tackling these genuine barriers to women’s equality.

  10. Statement by Rape Crisis Scotland and other Women's Rights Orgs on the #UK blocking #Genderrecognitionreform

    (1) It is demoralising to see how trusted and highly experienced experts on equality and providers of services to women have been drowned out in this debate and denigrated for standing against misinformation".

  11. BBC says UK #Labour won't defend the #ScottishParliament and its #GenderRecognitionReform bill, even though most #ScottishLabour MSPs voted for it and it was in their manifesto.

Another nail in the coffin for Scottish Labour.

  12. Answering elsewhere what I think it is in it for the #Tories in vetoing #GenderRecognitionReform in #Scotland

    - It tests the waters for vetoing other Scottish bills later

    - It picks a fight on terrain of #LGBT rights where they think they are united and we are divided (I think they are mistaken and will unite us further)

  14. #HMGov blocking #Scotland’s #GenderRecognitionReform Bill is appalling, an absolute disgrace. Sadly, it is also not at all surprising. The #Tories - #UKPolitics in general, to be honest - always find new ways to treat Trans people with contempt. Absolutely mortified by this country. Again.

  17. "Dougie Smith, a former adviser to Boris Johnson, who coordinated the “war on woke” pursued by the Johnson administration, has been tasked with “weaponising” the issue of trans rights before the next election."

"He was said to be behind Johnson’s strategy to stir divisions on racial, heritage and cultural issues to ally the Tories with working-class voters in “red wall” seats."

  18. if you're wondering why the uk gov can't find time to negotiate a payrise for nurses, it's because they're too busy threatening to directly block legislation from the Scottish parliament carried with a 2/3 cross party majority
