Good morning. 🌊🌊🌊
27 February 2026
When I was a kid in school, I used to paint pictures of the ocean. I loved shaping the waves and their whitecaps, and for a kid who hadn’t even hit double digits, I wasn’t half bad. I’d slip into the zone—so focused that the rest of the world fell away and the work just flowed. Painting isn’t a skill I’ve carried into adulthood, but that feeling of dropping into the zone still shows up now and then, even if it’s rarer than it used to be.
You probably know the feeling. When you’re creating something and the knowledge, the muscle memory, the instincts—they’re all right there, lining up without effort. You’re on a roll, and you know it.
Maybe it’s biorhythms, maybe it’s something else. Science mostly shrugs at the idea of biorhythms, but the truth is we all have days when everything clicks and days when we can’t seem to do anything right. Most of life happens somewhere in between.
I’m not sure where I’m going with this—must be one of those in‑between days. Maybe the best way to explain “the zone” is through running. At the start you feel clumsy, every step a bit of work. But as you settle in, your focus narrows, distractions fall away, and the movement smooths out. The effort becomes its own reward. Runners call it being in the zone, or runner’s high.
It makes me wonder if that state has something to do with the body’s own chemistry—dopamine, serotonin, the neurotransmitters that shape motivation, reward, and mood. There’s probably something there. I’ll have to think on it a bit more.
“Attention is the beginning of devotion.” - Mary Oliver
“The mind’s first step to self-awareness must be through the body.” - George Sheehan
“It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste much of it.” - Seneca

Sowas nennt man wohl Runners High 🤔
Es war auf jeden Fall ein tolles Gefühl 👍👍 und am Tag danach fühlen sich meine Beine auch wieder ganz gut an 😊 -
While many people kick-start their day with a cup of caffeine: Breakfast Tea, Espresso perhaps, I prefer a cheeky cocktail — a shot of Serotonin, a dash of Dopamine, a twist of Endorphins, a splash of Endocannabinoids, and a kick of Adrenaline — all naturally released during and after a run.
I’m still nursing a bit of a hamstring niggle, but it’s heading in the right direction as I tentatively reintroduce some gentle speed work.
April looked like this:
Distance: 186km (115.58 miles)
Longest run: 10.96km (6.81 miles)
Average run: 7.68km (4.77 miles)
Average pace: 5:37/km (9:03/mile)
Fastest km: 4:50/km (7:47/mile)

We're doing this corporate challenge in EMEA IT at the moment to go in sum a specific distance together. So I planned for 14km today. After 7km I had this #ForrestGump thing. At 10.5km I didn't want to risk anything and turned. And for the first time since years I had a #runnersHigh at km 14 clearly visible at the pace. 😅 The last 2km were a bit hard, but still OK. And still able to go the HM distance sub2. #running #runnersOfMastodon #halfMarathon

I’ve never experienced runner’s high, but I have felt runner’s smugness | Jane Howard: For me, running isn’t about the euphoria – it’s about the small, everyday achievement of doing something I know will make me feel better in the long run

I am a bad runner. OK, maybe not “bad”. I get out there, I do it. But I am slow and plodding.
@ghose I don't think I've experienced runner's high. There have been times during which I could have kept #running but it was more in a relaxed low effort state than euphoria. I doubt that's what they mean.

First unassisted/solo-run after the #couchto5k program. I’ll admit I was less than motivated without the “goal” to work towards. So I just made another goal and took off. Sure the pace was slow, but it was my farthest run yet. I think I finally got that #runnershigh and the hangover in my legs this morning is worth it.

Racing Tomorrow – Bure Valley 10 Mile
Final Grand Prix Race of 2023. Will I end on a high?
Even though it has only been 5 weeks since the Dereham 5k, it seems like months. I guess this is because all of the other 2023 Sportlink Grand Prix races were much closer together (with 3 days being the shortest gap).
So here we are. Tomorrow it’s the turn of the Bure Valley Harriers to host their Bure Valley 10 Mile Race, the 14th, and (sadly) final, Sportlink Grand Prix race of the 2023 season. (It looks like there are still a few places available if you fancy it… you can enter at Total Race Timing.)
Starting and finishing in the North Norfolk village of Banningham, my presumption is that it will be a gently undulating route around the surrounding country roads. If the weather is favourable, I suspect fast times will be the order of the day.
And speaking of the weather, the current forecast is a sunny 16° C, with a moderate breeze. So fingers crossed conditions will be near perfect.
Predictions
Below is a table of predictions from various algorithms / sources. Note that the Athlete Data Analysis Platform and Running Watch do not provide 10 mile race predictions, and so I have had to derive values from their 10 km and half marathon distance predictions.
AlgorithmPace (min/km)Time (mm:ss)Difference from fastest (%)Riegel (6 min Assessment)4:3774:17– 11.3 %Riegel (3.2 km Assessment)4:2871:53– 8.4 %Athlete Data Analysis Platform4:2170:00– 5.9 %Running Watch4:1468:07– 3.2 %TrainAsONE4:0766:15– 0.5 %Riegel (5 km Race)4:0666:06–Predictions for tomorrow’s 10 mile road race from a selection of sources. Ordered by increasing velocity.
Given that my last 10 mile race was completed in 66:33 (a personal record), I would have thought that a sub 70 minute time is probable.
Consequently, as has been the case for the whole season, the assessment predictions are suggesting quite a slow (and unlikely?) time for me. And, as has been common, the Athlete Data Analysis Platform and Running Watch are suggesting times somewhere between my expectation and the assessments.
Another 10 mile PB? TrainAsONE thinks so.
At 66:06, the 5 km Riegel prediction is the fastest, with TrainAsONE a close second with a time of 66:15. It is nice to see them concur. It gives faith in their values, and is especially nice as they both predict a personal record time! The game is on!
Wish me luck!
(I’ll let you know how it goes.)

I'm a reluctant runner. I only do it for the company and for the food reward at the end. The idea of a 'runner's high' seems elusive, but scientists think there is something there; they're just not sure what it is.
