  1. News Summary: Indie Manga Publishers Join Forces, and Reading Gets Its Couch to 5K

Manga has been growing in popularity for many years, and indie authors have been part of that resurgence. This week I was excited to see the launch of a group calling itself the Indie Manga Alliance. It is starting life as a group of five independent US-based publishers but clearly wants to establish itself beyond that.

  2. Finished #CouchTo5K!!!

Pushed myself to run for 38 minutes in my final run to hit the magic 5K target.

Ran in my favourite place (my local woods) and spending more time in nature has been one of the highlights of this programme.

  3. I have only one run left in my #CouchTo5K program but while I can comfortably run for 30 minutes, I'm still very slow.

Today I ran for 32 minutes and just passed 4km.

So to encourage me to stick with it, I've just signed up for a local 5km race in three weeks time.

  4. I don’t think I posted last week about my first #parkrun which was my first ever 5km run.

(I didn’t manage 5K at the end of my #CouchTo5k journey two days earlier).

Insanely hot, but lovely surroundings at Sizewell Beach, and I was accompanied by three running friends to support me.

I ran the whole way, and kept roughly to my sensible target pace of 9.5 min/km.

I was aiming for 48-50 min and managed 49 min, which was quite an achievement for me in the heat.

    Here’s to friends! ❤

  5. I think that’s my most satisfying #CouchTo5K run yet. I had to wake up at 6am to get out at 6:30 in order to avoid the heat.

I’ve started running in my local woods because they are notably cooler so I also got a nice burst of nature to refill my mental space as well.

    One week to go! 🏃‍♂️

Casquette rules!

  7. That was a very tough week 8 run of my #CouchTo5K program.

Knew it would be hot today. I thought I’d try to go for a run before 8 am but it’s still 20°! I managed it but I think next run will have to be at 6 am.

  8. And #CouchTo5k is done 🙂

I’ve only managed just under 3.4km so far, but I can now run for 30 minutes consistently. And the last two runs I completely enjoyed (I dropped my pace a little to make it more sustainable).

Now to actually do my first 5km in two days time at a local beach-front parkrun. I’m aiming to be able to complete that in 48-50 minutes.

  9. Just finished week 7 of #CouchTo5K! That’s three 25-minute runs. Next up will be week 8 with 28 minute runs!

Getting closer to the end now! 🏃‍♂️

  10. I just completed week six of #CouchTo5K! So that’s a 25 minute non-stop run which I really didn’t think I’d be able to do a few weeks ago

checking my spreadsheet – because I always have a spreadsheet – this is the longest I have run in over six years!

  11. Yesterday’s #CouchTo5k run was brought to you via Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Cold weather, and no pretty view, so I knew I just needed to retreat inside my head and get it done.

So for the first time I listened to music. I figured Frankie might have the right balance of energy and putting a smile on my face.

It worked. I didn’t really feel the pain and mostly enjoyed myself.

Slower than on the beautiful estuary path, but decent.

What type of things do you listen to when running?

  12. @feijoa Similar but different for me! El Salvador coffee (tasting notes: sharp, caramel) then off for a #couchto5k session 👍

  13. Week 8 of #CouchTo5k and my longest run yet: 28 min and 3.18km.

Remarkably I mostly enjoyed it, unlike the last 4 which were a horrible slog.

Maybe it was the beautiful surroundings rather than laps of my local park?

Or maybe it was a little easier because it was on a hard surface rather than grass?

Anyway, a welcome break, as I thought all the enjoyable runs were behind me.

Pity I won’t be back here until after I’ve finished the course. But week 9 will be done in/around a buttercup field.

  14. I just completed week five of my hashtag #CouchTo5K program! 🏃‍♂️

I really didn’t think that at the start of week five I would be able to complete a 20 minute continuous run but I did it!

Of all the weeks of this program this has been the most satisfying week by far.

  15. Just finished my first run in week five of #CouchTo5K.

This is going to be a tough week as it culminates in a 20 minute run without any breaks!

  16. #Threegoodthings

🫟 Completed the first run of the third week of #couchto5k without stopping/quitting/expiring. The difficulty curve is - expectedly - ramping up and I’m hanging on in there!
🫟 It’s a lovely weather day; warmish with a breeze
    🫟 Garlic pizzabread for lunch

  17. End of week 6 of #CouchTo5k

    My first 25 min run.

By 8 minutes in I started to enjoy it a bit. Then waves of struggling, and it being ok, presumably as endorphins neutralised the pain in my leg muscles.

If I can do 25 minutes now I’ll be able to do 30 minutes by the end in 3 weeks time, barring injuries.

I don’t see me managing 5K though. My pace has been pretty consistent, and implies I’ll do about 3.3km in 30 minutes. So the course is maybe optimistic for someone with my starting fitness!

  18. The last of the “easy” runs for #CouchTo5k.

From the next run onwards, there are no breaks during each session, just runs of length 25, 28, or 30 minutes.

I actually rather enjoyed this one. The second 10 min run was surprisingly easier than the first 10 min run.

I feel the limiting factor in my body now is the strength/stamina in my leg muscles, rather than my heart or lungs.

  19. #couchto5k #c25k #running

Second week of Couch to 5K completed! Like many a venture there’s mixed feelings, blessedly the positive resonate with more impact.

I’m now moving my body in a way that respects, honours and challenges it, though it is with some small grief that I naturally mourn my past (better) health and reflect on the changes between ‘then’ me and ‘now’ me. Guilt, regret and anger be gone - we work with and cherish all that we have IN THIS MOMENT ❣️

  20. 5 weeks of #CouchTo5k completed.

The biggest increment so far. Going from 2 x 8 min, with a break, on the previous run, to a single 20 min run today.

The last 4 minutes was the killer and I slowed right down. But I got it done.

  21. Start of week 5 of #CouchTo5k

Now all running segments are 5 minutes long. The first one was tough.

I’m trying to train myself to stop clock watching and just get into a sort of meditation to plough through it.

  22. Minor milestone accomplished! I’ve just completed week three of #CouchTo5K. I used to run 5K quite regularly and did a weekly Park Run when I lived in London.

The combination or my advancing age, an extra child, and other commitments have all meant that my running habits have disappeared.

Although I religiously walk 10K steps every day, I’ve wanted to try to get back into running.

Getting three weeks under my belt now makes me feel like I’m finally starting to make it a regular habit… which I guess is the most essential aspect of it! 🏃‍♂️

  23. Managed to get out for my 5th #parkrun after completing #Couchto5k and it was a lovely sunny day to be at Watermead!

  24. #CouchTo5k #WatchTo5k The developer has replied and said he got complaints about the old voice, which is why he changed it, and having two voices would make the app too big.

But he appreciates the upset of changing it mid-programme, and has offered to send me a test build of the old version, so I can compete the programme with the old voice :-)

  25. #CouchTo5k week 4 run 2

The second brutal run, a little easier this time, and a bit further so I got to the pretty spot.

Dodging showers today rather than lawn mowers. But I have my new waterproof hat.

Annoyingly my #WatchTo5k coach has been “upgraded” to an American 😞

I’ve sent a support ticket asking if the old voice can be offered as an option. She had a lovely mellow accent (maybe Irish or Scottish?)

Having your personal trainer “fired” without your consent is a bit of a rug-pull.

  26. Monday again, but this morning I’m going to start my running regularly again.

Just haven’t been able to find time or motivation over the last month or so with work being as busy as it has been. I prefer running in the morning and there’s been too many early starts and trips to the office.

I think I’m going to go back some weeks in the Couch To 5K program and start again from there.

  27. Started the NHS's Couch to 5k programme today. I even did it in public around the nearby green because it's so sunny and the closest thing to a circuit. I picked Sarah Millican as my "coach" because she doesn't talk as much but also sounds like home.

I was pretty nervous but I told myself there's nothing wrong or weird about exercising in public, and towards the end I got encouraging words from the neighbour down the street with the old chocolate lab!
