The Silo Remembers the Harvest
From Nebraska to New York, the silos are hollow until hallowed. The elevator starts before the sun does. On a November morning in 2019, I stood by a rail siding in a county-seat town in Nebraska and watched a truck empty itself into the pit while the leg lifted the corn a hundred feet into the headhouse, kernel by kernel, out of sight. What stays with you is the sound. A grain elevator at work has a voice like weather, a steady granular rain inside a concrete throat, and the dust it exhales catches the first light and holds it for a moment above the tracks. The building does one thing a child could explain: it keeps the harvest, standing at the edge of town, taller than the church, the courthouse, and the water tower, doing that one thing for a hundred years. Yet the same word that names this building now names the most despised structure in American institutional life. Say "silo" in a boardroom or a hearing room and the response arrives on reflex: break them down. Somewhere between the rail siding and the hearing room, the container became the crime. The Sinking of Victory Chimes
In late 2024, I wrote a research article on Victory Chimes, a historic schooner that was docked at Brooklyn Bridge Park and was in the process of being converted into a restaurant boat. My article perfomed well on NLJ, earning a Wikipedia citation and rating as my 22nd most-visited article of 2025. Granting its past success, it hit a new level beginning around July 4 in a surge which continued through the 7th, rating as our second most-visited article of July 4-10. Unfortunately, my article […]https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/sinking-of-victory-chimes-07-12-26/

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 05-18-26
Monday is here. So too after taking the weekend off are my Pook-Emu Bee links. 1. Maniac strangles 7-year-old boy in Brooklyn park: cops (Dean Moses for Brooklyn Paper. May 18, 2026.) These sorts of troubling Brooklyn headlines are seldom about places I visit. That is mostly true in this case as well, but "Bush-Clinton Park in the Red Hook Recreation Area" caught my attention. I only walked by the park a few times (it is not where I typically stroll in Red Hook), but one of those walks led […]https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/pook-emu-bee-links-for-05-18-26/

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 05-11-26
I took an off-day from Pook-Emu Bee links yesterday. I am busy today, but let us not let that stop us from our daily selection of links from around the web. 1, Putting the phone down: an Osmo Nano workflow (Wojtek Powiertowski at Behind the Viewfinder. May 10, 2026.) That camera is adorable. 2. Latvian defence minister resigns after Ukrainian drones hit oil depot (Brussels Signal. May 11, 2026.) To be fair to the now-former Defense Minister, I am not sure Ukrainian drone strikes would […]https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/pook-emu-bee-links-for-05-11-26/

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 05-06-26
I missed publishing daily Pook-Emu Bee links yesterday due to a work deadline. But we are back today with nine new links from around the world wide web. 1. Famed Atheist Richard Dawkins — Author of ‘The God Delusion’ — Believes AI Is Conscious (Scott Pinsker for PJ Media. May 5, 2026.) My conscious brain is struggling to decide which of many possible one-liners to go with. Let us keep it simple and just say that I guess Mr. Dawkins is taking a leap of faith in the pages of UnHerd. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 04-14-26
I did not have much time to engage in my daily "feed reading" this morning. But I will not let that stop me from publishing my daily Pook-Emu Bee links. 1. Justice Department Files Case to Revoke U.S. Citizenship of Mastermind Behind Multimillion-Dollar Tax Fraud Scheme (USCIS. April 13, 2026.) The marriage fraud allegations are a nice addition. It's always who you least expect. 2. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 03-19-26
Another day means more daily Pook-Emu Bee links. If you enjoy the (almost) daily links and commentary, you can also follow via feed. 1. Opera GX Web Browser Released For Linux (Michael Larabel for Phoronix. March 19, 2026.) Awesome! I have been happy on Linux since August 2020, but I have often found myself thinking that my experience would be perfect if I had that unaesthetic spying browser for gamers that the YouTube people promote. 2. Another pleasant discovery in my neighborhood yesterday. Defonte’s has been an institution in Red Hook for over a hundred years, family-run since 1922, and served me one of the best Italian sandwiches I’ve ever had. I’m kicking myself for not knowing about it earlier. We yearn for travel adventures, but sometimes serendipity strikes at home when you just leave your routine paths and turn left instead of right.

“Ortstafeln, -schilder” / Place name signsThis sign has clearly been here for years, but today is the first time I’ve seen it, even though I’ve lived in this neighborhood for decades. It’s wonderful that even the places you think you’re most familiar with can still surprise you.

Idyllic day of livemusic in the park. The perfect confluence of people, vibe, weather, and, of course, the music - provided by the Cordero/Kerlin Group and the Elkhorn Trio. There were at least 3 other legit shows going on in town this afternoon, but I think this was the winner. Freaks Day Out!

Yo NYC/BK folk: next Freaks Day Out is tomorrow (Sunday!). Monster bill with the Elkhorn Trio and Cordero/Kerlin Group (w/ Jessica Pavone, Jeffrey Tobias, and Ryan Sawyer). IYKYK.
