Alright, I've now hit this Tuesday gig 6 times this year and I've seen enough to say it's maybe the best thing going in NYC livemusic right now. Just hasn't been anything short of remarkable. And I'm discovering a lot of great new local talent. Two weeks ago this dude Mike Robinson on pedal steel was a revelation, the improv melodic and ambient. Last night, Ryan Weiner on guitar and it was some serious thick-necked jamprov.
Highest recommendation.

Caught Go Kurosawa last night, in the round at LPR. First of all, more shows in the round, please! He's got a killer band and it was kind of just a lot of songs opening up into a range of different styles of jamming. Ambient, jazzy, funky, rocking, heavy... Standard instrumentation and then a flute or marimba or sax would break out, not to mention lots of heady percussion. No notes, a fabulous show.
The bummer of Kikagaku Moyo shutting it down has been all but forgotten as the members branch out into uniformly awesome projects. Expecting more and more from these dudes.

My new favorite regular gig in NYC is the improv jam going on at the Richardson in Williamsburg every Tuesday. Seems mostly organized by Scott Colberg, who's become my seek-at-all-costs bassist in town. Everything he does seems to be fantastic which is how I feel about Jeremy Gustin, who is often on these gigs as well.
Tonight the trio was those two and this new-to-me dude Abe Seiferth on guitar/electronics. Caught the second set and it was holyshit! good.
Amazing jams will always find a place to live in this town. If the last 25+ years have taught me anything, it's that.

Taper's Choice once again tonight. I love so many things this band does, I feel like I want to write paragraphs every time I see them. Tonight I was really zeroed in on how there's no standard "leader" in the band, much to their credit, and how it manifests itself in so many ways. The jamming gets almost *beyond* democratic. There was an extended stretch of improv where the keys and guitar were basically soloing simultaneously. Not a back-and-forth, not one complementing the other, but two guys somehow locked in for like ten minutes of build where they were almost indistinguishable from each other. Never seen anything like that and it blew my mind. Lots of moments like that. Last night was sick, tonight was something else. Wowza and more at Brooklyn Bowl.

Tonight: Taper's Choice opens their tour and I was literally smiling from ear to ear the entire set. They just click for me on multiple layers like few others do. Lots of killer jams woven expertly into their proggy compositions. Zach had a Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman/Howe vintage tshirt on and Chris with not just a Grateful Dead tee but more specifically a *Mars Hotel* tee. I don't think you could sum up their sound any better than that unless Dave had a rainbow PH logo shirt on under his leather jacket. Sick progjams at Ardmore Music Hall. Looking forward to more back home tomorrow night.

Finally down to LPR for Medeski, Martin, Metzger, and Cline for a full 2ish hours of non-stop improv. This one hit all the buttons! Formless morass of noise to tight-as-fuck dance jams and almost every point in between. All four dudes got a chance to shine individually and were a formidable force when they locked in, which was more often than not. Love it when a show like this is just weird enough to thin out the crowd a bit. Went from comfortably crowded to perfect crowd size in good time. A great, great set. Glad I finally hit one of these and glad they moved it to LPR.

@DeliaChristina 😆 I LOVE that one. Was trying to explain it to friends over drinks the other night (it was too noisy to just play it for them)
(I was going to post that one to our work Slack #jams channel but... edges just close enough to NSFW. So no.)
Merry christmas!

The Absurdity of Commuting by Car
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Yesterday I drove to an event in Geneva and I parked at the P&R étoile. I went by car for a simple reason. I wanted the trip home to be fast and efficient. It worked. What wasn't fast and efficient was the drive into Geneva.
I left with at least one and a half hours of time to get to my destination but got to the event with just three minutes to spare. The journey time that takes half an hour out of peak traffic takes one hour or more during rush hour.
Part of my motivation for taking the car is that parking cost just 4 CHF for the duration, whereas taking the train would have cost 11-14 CHF. It made financial sense to take the car even if I wasted a lot of time in getting to Geneva.
Twenty Six minutes to get home, rather than an hour to an hour and a half justifies the traffic jam when getting to Geneva.
When heading to Geneva there is a paradox. If you leave early enough, the journey will be quick, but the wait will be long, but if you leave at just the wrong time the one hour drive takes an hour and twenty minutes or more.
That's why when hikes and other events are organised on the other side of Geneva I skip them. By this I mean hikes in the Alps and more. It takes as long to get to Noiraigue, as it does to get into Geneva.
In contrast the train is fast, and efficient. When I work in Geneva, especially if I pay for parking, I will not even consider the car. Why would I? It costs 30-40 CHF per day to park, and that's without petrol, electricity and other costs.
The A1 motorway is quiet today because people are not commuting or shopping. I thought that the pandemic had taught people to live without cars but that isn't the case. Their addiction is as bad as ever. The noise pollution is as bad as ever.
And Finally
If you have to be at work from 08:30-17:30 it makes little sense to use cars. It makes sense to use public transport because you save time, and money on parking. As soon as parking costs more than the price of a train ticket it is rational to use the train.
In addition, by taking the train to go to an event, you can suggest a co-working session in the afternoon, to do some networking before an event.
Cars were liberating, a decade or two ago, when congestion wasn't as bad. Now driving to and from Geneva is a chore, which is why trains are so great. It's quick, it's convenient, and it is consistent.

Tonight: wasn't the original plan, but as a member of shakedown.social, I believe I am legally obligated to give Eggy another go. I believe the first two songs were played at the other show I saw, hopefully that changes. Webster Hall is more or less packed to the back and the jams do floweth. Lights from back here looking quite nice.

Today: first time seeing/hearing Eggy. Took a little bit, but eventually won me over with a couple choice covers appropriately taken deep. Pretty much sounded like I imagined they would, very jambandy in the strictest sense. At their worst, it's "PH lite," but a lot of fun and that was only an hour set in the afternoon on the beach, so I'll give it a pass. Would see again. (possibly later tonight, assuming I make it to the end).
-
Tonight: first time at Dada in Ridgewood. Chill spot, I dig it. Killer set going down from guitarist Elias Meister in trio with Scott Colberg and Jeremy Gustin. More jam than jazz, almost Krantzy. I just love watching JG play drums, never seen or heard anyone do it like he does. A mesmerizing groove no matter who he's playing with.

Tonight: very odd setlist tonight for Panic night 2, but that's part of the fun, right? But I thought the playing was on point. Some elaborate excursions and dark song suites. Jason Crosby featured prominently on fiddle and keys both and really shined and pushed the band in several key jams. They have left so much on the table for tomorrow's close-out, they could do some serious damage.

Tonight: someone fed old Wetlands lineups into an LLM and it spit this one out as a heady possibility. Joe Russo rounds out the old New Deal. It's the RuDeal and it's 2002 again at the Sultan Room. Dancing the insanity away like we're kids. Good times.

Tonight: Matt Pavolka Band, a rather scintillating prog-jazz fusion, third time seeing them and once again wowza! Features Santiago Leibson on keys, Ben Monder on guitar and Allan Mednard on drums and damn, do they all hit it. Way under the radar and playing to a mostly empty Nublu on a Monday night, but lucky us!

What’s my Jam?
Open Mentions asked What’s Your Jam?
If it has a good melody or a rocking beat, it is my jam. Almost all music is my jam.
I am fond of female vocals, rock/metal, EBM, ambient, k-pop, electro-swing, hip hop, rap, chap hop, nerdy stuff, alternative, experimental, 80s, and a little dubstep every now and then.
