Super enjoyed the Gizz Rave set last night. I just think it's an incredibly cool, unique thing they're doing that captures their weirdness perfectly, allows them to be a little more exploratory, is a true collective endeavor, and is just a lot of fun. They've invented something completely new and that's not nothing! One of my favorite livemusic things of the moment.
It was similar to the sets I caught in Europe last year with a couple minor differences. Those shows were almost exclusively high-energy dance jams with the occasional foray to more psych weirdness, last night was more like half and half, which I dug but wasn't sure how the audience did. The show last night was also significantly larger than the indoor shows I saw, so standing in the back felt a little removed from the energy whereas even in the back of those other shows I felt like I was never really far from the "action."
Otherwise... Loved it.

Second night of KGLW was a perfect flipside to rainy night one. The flow of the show was perfect from the opening note, I thought they did all the things they do as well as they can do them, loved the setlist for my tastes, and even a bizarre sit-in from... Max Weinberg? And... He kinda crushed it? Weather was stellar. First time taking in a Gizz Forest Hills show from the seats and didn't hate it.
But I'll be on the floor for tonight.

Soaking wet, but riding high. King Gizzard totally worth the pouring rain. First of four a raging success. Somehow managed to get two hours in and... fucking killed it. As if there was any doubt.

Caught my third of three Frisell August show at the Vanguard tonight, this with the "Four" quartet a bass-free guitar/piano/sax/drums thing. The pace was largely slow and dreamy with lots of space for the players to move around in. The opening stretch was a masterclass in 4-way improv. Rest was decent.
Frisell at the VV in August is one of my favorite NYC livemusic annual traditions.

After a couple weeks away from my dear NYC livemusic universe, I have been back with a vengeance the past week. Highlights include, but not limited to: serious jazz fire including Frisell twice at the Vanguard, Mehldau Quartet at Jazzcultural, and Marta Sanchez at Close Up. Frisell trio last night was especially expansive, as good as I've seen him in a while. Also Freaks Day Out Sunday was a glorious triplet of duos including a gnarly hour of ambient guitar-cello improv from Marlo and Lucas from Melt. Late set last night at Baby's All Right from Ista, perhaps my favorite new NYC rock band at the moment. Big high-energy psychedelic soulrock sound, somewhat reminiscent of the Family Stone with guitars and horn and even the occasional theramin! A band to watch for sure!

Been doing these FDO's since the pandemic, probably 25+ of em at this point. I think today's was maybe the best, musically, of all of them. Three bands doing a set of high-level pure improvisation. Three very different styles, but they all sort of fit together. Rain stopped, skies cleared, lovely breeze. The livemusicgods smiled down on Red Hook today.
Next Freaks Day Out is 8/9.

NYC area folk: the next Freaks Day Out is Saturday and features a killer threefer of jammers: Emergency Group, Elkhorn, and a first-time quartet of James Buckley, Jacob Drab, Luke Marantz, and Jeremy Gustin. Gonna be a stellar afternoon of music and hangs in Brooklyn.
Starts at 3, Valentino Park in Red Hook. Grab a sandwich at Defonte's and come hang. All are welcome.

Last night I got to see Julian Lage in very close proximity at the Stone, accompanying the legendary Greg Cohen on bass. Special stuff.
There really is no place like the Stone. A perfect music venue in almost every way.

Last night I caught a *sick* Simulacrum set at Roulette. Simulacrum being a Zorn project featuring Medeski, Hollenberg, and Grohowski playing the heaviest shit imaginable. Bonkers how much range Zorn has.

Checked out the new jazz club, the Pocket tonight. Unfortunate location pretty much requires a walk thru Times Square which was extra hairy this evening with World Cup revelry. Inside is nice, though, on the swankier side, as you might imagine given the address.
Band was worth it: Joel Ross Good Vibes with Chris Potter, Miguel Zenon, Yvonne Rogers (!!), Kanoa Mendenhall, and Jeremy Dutton. They played 3 songs in an hour's time, largely due to so much talent each needing their solo time. But, such talent!

Also, Freaks Day Out today was a blast with two killer sets of music - from Drew Gardner and Vague Plot - and positively perfect weather for outdoor hanging.
This morning ended being quite hectic, doing DIY shows on your own is no picnic, but worth it in the end. Next one is 7/11, you should come!

I had no business leaving my apartment today, recovering from the weekend and some sort of vertigo, but it was 5 minutes away and I knew it'd be an easy 8-9pm hour of the kind stuff and that it was. New Masada Quartet never not astounding. Tonight, magical evermore for a sold out and rapt Roulette.
