Simple retries can make a bad situation worse. Stop DDOSing your own API.

A linear 5-retry loop holds threads too long. Use exponential backoff with jitter and a circuit breaker. Fast-fail when a service is down to keep the rest of your site responsive.

Is this a name for this pattern:

When the service that you are calling returns "429: Too Many requests" you stop taking on new work entirely (e.g. de-queuing messages for processing), until the given "retry after" time is elapsed. Not just suspend the current request, but prevent others from starting. Then resume.

This is a form of "backpressure", but are there libraries for it? I'm looking at #DotNet #Polly
