  1. #MénièresDisease #Vertigo #Caffine #Salt #HearingLoss #Balance

It took three years to get a diagnosis of Menieres--2017 to 2020

It's been 5 years since I had caffinated coffee.
It's been 7 years since I shook a salt shaker.
It's been one day since I stopped decaf coffee.

I began having severe vertigo last week. 3 very strong episodes, what I scale as 8 out of 10, 10 being a drop attack. Yes, that's just what it sounds like--no warning, no spinning or tilting--just down.

2 of them happened while I was driving. It really SUCKS and is very scary because even trying to get to the side of the road seems impossible when everything is sliding and tilting and moving up and down.
    One other was milder.

This week one severe (again while driving!) and three small episodes.

I had been free of it for
nearly two full years, after an injection into my right ear drum.

I'm not fucking around with it. I called my doctor and am scheduling a second injection---the risk is deafness on that ear, whech already can't hear. Th eprevious injection caused no drum tissue damage, so it's worth it for me.

End of my pissing and moaning. I am very grateful for medicare and secondary insurance.

  13. Constantine (2005) with Merrilee O’Neil (Fear Coded)

Some licensed games take you to fantastical worlds filled with wonder and adventure. This is not one of those games. This time on Play Comics we’re trudging through the smoke-filled, demon-splattered streets of Constantine (2005), the tie-in that asked, “What if we took Keanu Reeves, a theological horror film, and the PS2’s most dramatic lighting engine, and just… saw what happened?” Somehow it’s a third-person action game, a movie adaptation, and a vaguely spiritual experience about regretting your rental choices all at the same time.

Chris isn’t wandering this half-lit hellscape alone though. Merrilee O’Neil from Fear Coded jumps into the exorcism circle to help figure out where this game lands on the spectrum from “surprisingly solid” to “should’ve stayed in development hell.” Together they’re digging into how much of the comic DNA and film mood actually survived the trip through Bits Studios and THQ, and how often it just turns into early-2000s “shoot the demon, ask theology questions later” energy.

So grab your PS2 or Xbox controller, light a metaphorical cigarette (or maybe don’t, your lungs will thank you), and step into a world where holy relics share inventory space with questionable game design choices. Expect demons, exorcisms, and more snark than you can fit into one trench coat as Chris and Merrilee poke at what works, what doesn’t, and why this particular slice of licensed weirdness still lingers like the smell of burnt incense in a game store bargain bin

    Learn such things as:

      • Do demons care about hit points?
      • How do the timelines of the movie vs the game development interact with each other?
      • Did this game even have a chance when it had to pick between being true to the movie or the comic source material?
      • And so much more!

You can find Merrilee being the main driver of the Fear Coded account on BlueSky @fearcodedpod.bsky.social on her podcast Fear Coded.

If you want to hear Chris talk with Karrington Martin about the lessons we learned from children’s media and how crazy it is that we’re supposed to just forget about that now that we’re adults, then Sugar, Spite, and Everything is Fine is probably something you should check out.

  14. I've recently read "Vertigo: The Rise and Fall of Weimar Germany" by Harald Jähner.

Specialists with a good knowledge of the political history of interwar Germany will probably agree with the criticisms of leading historian Richard Evans in his 29/11/ 24 TLS review, in which he notes the failure of the book to address important aspects of the republic's politics such as the nature of the constitution.

Evans goes on to criticise "Vertigo" as being overly focused on Berlin and its culture of modernity and its neglect of rural and small town Germany.

For a cultural history, though, this emphasis on Berlin is justified, because that metropolis was offering novel aspirations, norms, and ways of living for the country as a whole, even if the reaction to that agenda in much of rural Germany was one of suspicion, resentment, and finally hatred. One rural commentator Jähner quotes noted with bitterness the exodus of women to the city, "the mass grave of the German people", attracted as they were by "greed, by pleasure seeking, by hollow noise in every area of life, by noisy oriental Jewish nonsense in state politics, department stores and theatres."

I would guess that the these seductive possibilities were made known throughout the German speaking world by the mostly Berlin based media of cinema and the illustrated press. Even if the overwhelming majority of Germans neither actively participated in the new forms of art and entertainment flowering in Berlin nor experimented with new metropolitan practices and presentations in sex and gender, the very existence of this new culture could not do other than transform cultures beyond the metropolis, even if only by introducing within them a self-conscious note of antiurban antimodernity.

Jähner, a journalist, has a good feel for both aspects of everyday life that might pass unnoticed by too many historians, such as the yoyo craze of 1932, and also for the disparate and sometimes internally contradictory emotions, moods, and feelings underlying the republic's culture.

Although "Vertigo" is neither comprehensive nor unquestionable in its treatment of Weimar Germany , it is a rich and thoroughly readable resource for non-Germanists like me, and notable for its determination to treat the culture of the republic as worthy of examination and perhaps celebration in its own right, as opposed to being merely an interlude leading to the advent of the Third Reich.
