AOTY: #Overtake
Not to make the obvious pun, but Overtake overtook my expectations in becoming my favorite anime of 2023. Starting off as a sports anime focusing on the niche yet dynamic world of F4 racing, the series quickly defines itself as something interested in broader, more human concerns. Between the realistic concerns over funding and the amount of effort it takes to participate in the sport, Overtake explores the ways that our passions and pursuits either hide or reveal parts of ourselves we’re uncomfortable with, particularly that which has traumatized us.

Finally, also in 2023, Konishi voiced Kouya Madoka in #overtake. A hyperactive photographer who finds himself in the world of F4 racing, Kouya turns out to be a committed figure in Haruka's life while also dealing with his own baggage. A somewhat goofier turn for Konishi, he's still able to be emotionally affective when need be, particularly in the anime's standout ninth episode.

Ultimately, there are two ways to view the Overtake! anime. Either it's a drama series that happens to have racing in it. Or, it's a racing anime carried heavily by a single, great drama episode.

Overtake!'s three-way rivalry between Haruka, Satsuki, and Toshiki was better than I expected it to be at the start of the series. I thought it was going to be awkward trying to make all three of them compelling characters.

Is Overtake! the best racing anime (other than Redline, of course)? I'm sure most people would say no. But, in this review of the series, I make an argument for it.

To complete 2023's hat trick, Yashiro was also in the surprise hit #overtake. Playing F4 driver Tokumaru, Yashiro was able to showcase his abilities further in playing a rival with more than a grudge to spare only to face the realities and pressures of being the one in first. Yashiro's performance was gruff, conflicted, and yearning in the best ways one could be.

I was a bit confused when Overtake! Episode 10 cut from practice at Fuji Speedway to post-qualifying at Suzuka Circuit. That was some Drive to Survive level editing to craft a narrative.
