So I have the next topic for my blog planned, but first I would like to get some input from others.
When it comes to working in the office, working full remote or in a hybrid form of some sort, which is your preference. Also please feel free to provide your comments as to what you feel are the pros and cons in replies.

I found out years ago how good us Americans have it when in the same week it was “to nice out” and on another day “to cloudy to dreary” to work.

Your Boss Wants You Back in the Office. This Surveillance Tech Could Be Waiting for You
Warehouse-style employee tracking tech has expanded into job after job. Now, as millions are called back to the workplace, it’s finally coming for the office worker. https://www.wired.com/story/your-boss-wants-you-back-in-the-office-this-surveillance-tech-could-be-waiting-for-you/ #surveillance #privacy #work #tech #officeWork -
Rain is a Thing
So rain is still a thing. I mean this from a work point of view.
When Covid hit and we all started working from home full time, I learned to stop really worrying about rain. I didn’t have a commute anymore so I didn’t need to drive to and from work in the rain. I didn’t need to walk out to a parking lot in the rain. I didn’t even need to walk to the driveway. From the perspective of getting to and from work rain (and snow) stopped being a concern at all.
Now that we’re back in the office at least some of the time it’s a thing again and it sucks.
It is pouring rain today. I’m looking out the window and the parking lot looks like a small lake. I have to drive to a different building soon and that means I have to go out in this suck-fest of a rain storm and get drenched so that I can make the next meeting.
Working at home is so much better than working in the office. So much better.
Thus concludes this morning’s rant about rain. Thank you for your time and patience.

Focusing on results or efficiency when discussing remote vs. in-office work is the wrong debate; it's not objective. You can find hundreds of good and bad examples for both ways.
The story should be if these decisions hide a way of firing people for free or hijacking people's time. The favorite ace up your sleeve to look good in front of investors: downsize your staff without spending money on severance pay.

#Work #RemoteWork #RTO #Productivity #OfficeWork: "For a clearer look at the effect of RTO policies after the pandemic, two business researchers at the University of Pittsburgh examined a sample of firms on the S&P 500 list—137 of which had RTO mandates and 320 that clearly did not between June 2019 and January 2023. The researchers collected publicly available data on each company, including financial data and employee reviews. They then looked at what factors were linked to whether a firm implemented an RTO policy—such as the company's size, financial constraints, and CEO characteristics—as well as the consequences of the RTO mandates—employee satisfaction and financial metrics of the firms.
Overall, the analysis, released as a pre-print, found that RTO mandates did not improve a firm's financial metrics, but they did decrease employee satisfaction.
Drilling down, the data indicated that RTO mandates were linked to firms with male CEOs who had greater power in the company. Here, power is measured as the CEO’s total compensation divided by the average total compensation paid to the four highest-paid executives in the firm.
Before the analysis, the researchers hypothesized that RTO mandates may be used to blame employees for poor firm performance. But, companies that have institutional ownership—such as hedge funds or endowments—would not fall for such a "blame game" and would thus would be less likely to implement an RTO mandate. The data supported those hypotheses. Firms with weaker stock performance before employees were able to return to the office were more likely to enforce RTO mandates. However, institutional ownership decreased the probability of RTO mandates.
Although CEOs often justified RTO mandates by arguing it will improve the company's performance, "Results of our determinant analyses are consistent with managers using RTO mandates to reassert control over"

Sir David Attenboroug narrates:
One of the pupae begins to hatch. Out of it comes ... yes ... an IT worker. Soon it will crawl out of its cyber-cocoon, and it will join the other IT workers, glistening under the fluorescent lights; the IT workers will 'help' the lesser drones by making them feel first ignored, and then, incredibly stupid.

Have a desk chair that's from IKEA or even something more high-end?
Here's your periodic reminder to maintain it.
I adjust mine every couple months, mostly when I notice it starts to wobble.
Your chair, even a cheap one from IKEA, will last for years and keep you healthier if you maintain it.
Check and tighten its fasteners, check and adjust its tilt resistance (the knob on the bottom), check that the arms are at the right level for your posture.

A couple years ago my back got *really* bad. It had been getting worse over the years, and it got to the point that I couldn't even walk. I'd fall down because the pain was so bad-- all the way down my leg. Never felt anything like it. I went to this pain place (Pain Stop here in Phoenix) and they have an on-site chiropractor and physical therapy both, both of which I used for months. Turns out, I had gotten sciatica really bad, and I had to get the back injections (they also refer out there to the place across the hall) along with the other stuff.
I also try to incorporate yoga into my days now, and I use one of these kneeling chairs. I love it, and I can't say enough good things about it. My wife thinks it's the weirdest thing ever. 😂 It took a TINY bit of getting used to, but not much, at least for me. Makes you sit up straighter, you get up and move more, it's fantastic. Highly recommend if you have back issues. Sitting on a chair with all your torso's weight on your tailbone all day is NOT good for you.

@luckytran I know it's trendy to criticize Musk these days. and yes, there are often enough reasons to do so.
however, I think in this case he has a point. it is a matter of fairness, justification to continuously reflect for the "laptop class" how they are contributing to value creation in a company.
and this is a topic beyond the trivials of #wfh #wfa vs #officework.
