  9. RE: mastodon.social/@anon_opin/115

Whilst this is partly true - for instance Crossrail / Elizabeth line was debated when I was a teenager, and only completed when I was the other side of 50, this also happen with #motorways / highways - there is no #motorway in the whole of #Suffolk and any plans to expand the A14 highway or deal with the bottleneck of the Orwell Bridge in #Ipswich get regularly rejected - its not even "value for the taxpayer" but also a suprising consensus of rich #NIMBY types who live in the rural areas and #Green activists who are unsurprisingly opposed to more road building - they do have a point as I can remember #M25 being built and soon getting gridlocked - but Suffolk does need *something* to cope with peak time traffic to/from the busy port at #Felixstowe

The lass in the diesel car wrong-laned a spiral roundabout coming off #M25 and ended up briefly going into Outer London and entering #ULEZ - she ended up with about £30 in charges but just paid them without whinging and blaming Sadiq Khan etc - there definitely seems to be a gender difference in how folk react to ULEZ (although its also the case folk round here don't always keep up with what is going on in London, a friend didn't realise where the boundary was as until last year he'd never even driven on the M25!)

  17. At #SouthMimms #motorway #servicestation on #M25 just outside #London returning from a visit to relatives for my birthday weekend, having a quick snack and a drink if Pepsi before I deal with the miserable section between Potters Bar and Enfield which seems to be a permanent roadworks zone at the moment. Lots more #EV chargers are appearing (not just Tesla) but alas, it seems Welcome Break have abandoned #recycling bins as I'm sure they had these last time I was here..

  18. I had a look at the area myself and TBH this seems like a load of middle class #NIMBY s - the #M25 #motorway service station in #Essex would take up a relatively small area of "green belt" space (compared to how much actually exists), and is genuinely useful for those driving long distances especially for those who have another few hours journey left along the # A12 / #A14

  20. #JustStopOil #activist jailed over ankle tag issue

by Jonathan Holmes, December 21, 2024

"A 77-year-old #environmental campaigner has been returned to jail after problems with an electronic tag to monitor her.

"#GaieDelap, a retired teacher from Montpelier in Bristol, was sentenced to 20 months in jail for participating in a Just Stop Oil protest that blocked the #M25 in November 2022.

"She was released on 18 November on a home detention curfew, but a tag could not be fitted to her leg because of deep vein #thrombosis, and it was too large for her wrist.

"The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said if offenders could not be monitored in the community electronically, they would be returned to prison even if it was no fault of their own.

"'We know this is cruel, and totally unnecessary. We know there are alternatives to the tag,' her supporters said in a statement.

"'Gaie is absolutely no threat to the community.

"'This recall to prison is a ridiculous waste of resources and money, and will cost the taxpayer £12,000 to keep Gaie in prison.

"'We cannot believe that there is not an electronic monitoring device that can be fitted at a fraction of the cost. We want common sense to prevail.'

"Ms Delap was arrested at 18:30 GMT on Friday and was taken to Eastwood Park Prison in Gloucestershire.

    'Extra punishment'

"Her case has been raised by the Bristol Central MP Carla Denyer, who wrote to the prisons minister Lord Timpson and the probation service.

"'Why is she facing this extra punishment of being locked up, for longer than she was meant to be, and over Christmas?

"'It's not because she's broken her bail conditions, it's because the private company responsible for fitting electronic tags couldn't find one the right size for her, and the authorities weren't willing to consider alternatives like daily check-ins at the police station,' she wrote on X.

"The MoJ said under the home scheme, offenders must be under an electronically monitored curfew for at least nine hours a day.

"'Where it is no longer possible to electronically monitor offenders in the community, through no fault of their own, they will be recalled until it is possible for them to monitored in the community,' the MoJ said."

  27. "#UniversalSuicide": An imprisoned #ClimateActivist on why the fight for the planet still matters

#JustStopOil cofounder Roger Hallam spoke with Salon about overcoming climate despair and taking action

    By Matthew Rozsa

    October 24, 2024

"Many people don’t need something as dramatic as #HurricaneMilton to tell them our climate is spiraling out of control. It’s evident everywhere, from the U.K. recently reporting its second worst #harvest on record to #Antarctica turning green to the U.S. spending $150 billion a year on climate change-related #ExtremeWeather events.

"But this isn’t some mysterious crisis. We know #FossilFuel companies are responsible for the emissions heating the globe. But instead of fixing it, these corporations have lied to the public, bribed politicians and sowed distrust in science. Meanwhile, governments are giving more money than ever to fossil fuel companies via subsidies, with a record $7 trillion cashed out to #BigOil in 2022.

"Some climate activist groups would like to bring your attention to this issue. But they are often arrested and get the book thrown at them when they demonstrate. Climate activist Roger Hallam knows this all too well, as he serves a five-year prison sentence for #BlockingTraffic — and, as he explained to Salon, his plight is a warning to Americans who vote for politicians that deny climate science.

"Hallam, who described himself as a #PoliticalPrisoner, was incarcerated for his role in leading and participating in an anti-climate change demonstration in November 2022. For four days, Hallam and more than three dozen other activists climbed a gantry and thereby blocked traffic in London’s critically important #M25 motorway."

  31. "#UniversalSuicide": An imprisoned #ClimateActivist on why the fight for the planet still matters

#JustStopOil cofounder Roger Hallam spoke with Salon about overcoming climate despair and taking action

  37. LB: it got built anyway; just it was a bit further outside the capital and renamed the #M25 😁

  38. If they legalised and regulated Sex Work then things like this wouldn't happen so easily.
Sex traffickers don't use Small Boats, they use Money and Patriarchy, and fuck all is going to be done about that.....

    #London #M25

  39. The #M25 motorway in #London and #SE England is often blocked for hours due to the aftermath of peoples bad and dangerous #driving (exacerbated by the demands of capitalism rather than even just selfishness such as DUI and speeding) - and even the offenders (if they survive) get less jail time than for the recent protests..

  40. CW: M25 collision, Court Case + sentence

    An #Ipswich #lorry driver got 3 years jail + 3 years #driving
ban after lack of attention led to multi vehicle #collision with fatalities and serious injuries (the relatively short sentence is due to an early guilty plea).

He was not on drugs/drink or using a mobile phone, but if driving to South Mimms should have been aware that traffic on #M25 is often slow around that area due to #congestion and reduced his speed..#RoadSafety

  43. here is the side of the other one at #SouthMimms #M25 services - (just outside North London), again directly outside the toilets (this time the toilets for both genders are in same place). The company is called TopGift, run by #Desi folk and based in #Southall West #London with satellite offices in #Birmingham and #'Manchester- they have more small shops but mostly sell mobile phone accessories and unlock phones / carry out repairs at the ones which aren't outside service station loos

  44. I discovered today during traffic jams on #A12 and #M25 that my car radio does autoscan in the background for new stations -there were at least 3 #FM #PirateRadio stations on the air (playing rave/dance/drum and bass genres) in South #Essex and #Enfield / #PottersBar area of #M25. including one on 87.5 MHz - I wondered why they used a frequency that is now cut across by small in-car transmitters, but realised this makes it near impossible for Ofcom to pin down who is doing it! >>
